Gator QB Brantley out for LSU game--and more?

Florida will go on the road to face LSU this week without injured senior quarterback John Brantley, Will Muschamp confirmed at his Monday press conference.

Muschamp told reporters that Brantley would be unavailable for the trip to Baton Rouge with what Muschamp called a "lower right leg" injury suffered in the Gators' 38-10 loss to Alabama. Muschamp also offered no timetable for Brantley's potential return, telling reporters "I will update you each Monday on his status."

Brantley had been spotted on campus earlier Monday walking in a large boot with crutches. But there is some good news for the Gators: Muschamp said doctors had ruled out surgery on the injury, substantially reducing the odds the injury is season-ending.

Of course, that won't do the Gators any good against LSU. Muschamp declined to name struggling backup Jeff Driskel the full-time quarterback for Saturday's game, saying the true freshman would start but that fellow freshman Jacoby Brissett and Tyler Murphy would each receiver practice reps this week and could see the field.

For the season, Driskel has completed just 6 of 17 passes for no touchdowns and two interceptions. We here at Eye on CFB wish him the best of luck as he and the other Florida quarterbacks prepare to face Tyrann Mathieu and the Bayou Bengal defense in Death Valley, because we feel certain they will need it.

That said, the Gators would have kept scoring. Brantley wasn't just good during the first half. He was excellent. He made ever throw and evry throw was just about perfect. The only inaccurate quarterback on Saturday night was McCarron. With the exception of the one key third down throw on the out pattern to the sideline, his accuracy was terrible.Brantley is a victim of perception because of memories of last season. He was usually brought in on thrid down, with no rhythm and everyone expecting him to throw. Saturday's first half made it obvious that he is a very, very good passer. Driskel may take some time to learn to read coverages, but he is a monster. During the Under-Armour game, he threw a perfect 60-yard pass across his body whil

This is all true.  I agree with the coaches' assessment that "this is a line of scrimmage league, and they won the line of scrimmage."  We got punked on the line on both offense and defense.  That was the main and only reason for the outcome.  It was the reason they ran the ball and we didn't.  It was the reason the QB for Florida got banged up, and McCarron was able to do his taunting of the Gator crowd.  I hope the Gator D line taped and replayed that for some motivation.  It should be mandatory viewing in the weight room.  Maybe also at the training table.  He can thank his offensive line that the back of his pants weren't dirty.

I understand that they have opened up the QB competition this week in practice to include Murphy and Brissett, but it will likely be Driskell.  Any or all of them will be heavily involved in handing off and running wildcats, but I expect Verducci to have a few things to say and do with his offensive line this week.  I would think it will involve firing off the ball and actually hitting somebody, instead of standing over their motionless QB and observing their handiwork.

All I said was that the Florida schedule was harder than Bamas, and it was.  I never said it was a hard schedule.  Try to read a little more closely.  Bama played kent State and North Texas, and the Arkansas game washes with the Tennessee game.
Do you really think Arkansas and Tenn are on the same level? Tenn has played Montana, Cinci, Florida, and Buffalo. They are 3-1 with a loss to Florida. Arkansas has played Mizzo State, New Mexico, Troy, Alabama, and Texas A&M. They are 4-1 with a loss to Bama. Florida has played Florida Atlantic (didn't even know they had a team), UAB, Tenn, Kentucky (they are really bad), and Alabama. They are 4-1 with a loss to Alabama. Alabama has played Kent St, Penn St, North Texas, Arkansas, and Florida. Alabama is 5-0. If you are to say Arkansas is on the same level as Tenn, that means Florida is on the same level as Tenn. I would be willing to say if Arkansas played Florida right now, they would beat them. They are 1-1 vs. ranked opponents, where Florida is 0-1. Alabama is 3-0, when they played Penn St, they were ranked. I really see Florida at best, coming in 3rd in the SEC East with 4 losses. You may not agree, and that is your right to your opinion, but when it happens, I will NOT tell you I told you so, you will already know. Georgia or USC will win the East and Bama or LSU will win the West. As much as it pains me to say it, the West will win the SEC and go to the National Championship Game against Oklahoma or Boise State. You can also say what you want about Boise, but after watching them beat up my dogs all I can say is they are a very, very well coached team that played with a lot of energy and have the 2nd best QB in the nation. He really reminds me of Joe Montana. He doesn't throw a lot of deep balls, but he spreads the ball out and kills you with his quick decission and accuracy up to 15 yards. A very smart QB.

Driskel will be fine

You can't judge a backup quarterback's ability to play for an entire game based upon how he does when coming in after an injury to the starter. The backup is in the game planning meetings but he doesn't get nearly enough reps in practice to be ready to perform as well as his ability might allow.

You will see a different Jeff Driskel against LSU, after he has had a week of practice with the first team offense.

What game were you watching?  Alabama couldn't stop Brantley.  I'm not saying that Florida would have won, but with Brantley in there Florida scores 30 plus points easily, and it certainly wouldn't have been a 3 TD loss - that is absurd and laughable.  Also, for the sake of accuracy, I have to point out that Florida's schedule up to Saturday's game was certainly harder than Alabama's, that isn't even arguable after Penn State barely squeaked by Indiana (with lots of help from the zebras).
Couldn't stop him? Are you serious? He was already stopped...that had a lot to do with why he got hurt.

UF Definitiely would of hade a better showing, but they were not going to run the ball, the passing game was already in the process of being shut down...take away the first pass of 65 yds and Brantley ended up 10-15, 125yds, 1 int...and let's not forget 4 rushes for -19 yds....a far cry from being in the game or anywhere close to controlling it...

McCarron was only 12-25 for 140yds....but UF could not stop the run....not to mention, No Turn-overs, no sacks allowed.

No way UF scores 30 points with Brantley...maybe another TD and a FG, at most.....at least according to the Game I was watching.
Brantley was 11 for 16 for 190 yards with a TD and a pick that wasn't his fault.  That is not the stats of a quarterback who has been "stopped" lol.  It is the opposite.  Remember, Alabama had the lead from a special teams TD.  Come back to earth please.  Yeah, there were some sacks, and there were some long 3rd down conversions.  So to say Brantley would not have made a difference is simply absurd.

Gator QB Brantley out for LSU game--and more?

I have never read such an un-informed group of comments.

I am a Gator fan and I believe Alabama would probably have won the game even if Brantley hadn't been hurt because Alabama's time of possession would have worn down the Gator defense. The Gators would have kept scoring through the air but it wouldn't have taken enough time off the clock for the defense to rest.

That said, the Gators would have kept scoring. Brantley wasn't just good during the first half. He was excellent. He made ever throw and evry throw was just about perfect. The only inaccurate quarterback on Saturday night was McCarron. With the exception of the one key third down throw on the out pattern to the sideline, his accuracy was terrible.

Driskel may take some time to learn to read coverages, but he is a monster. During the Under-Armour game, he threw a perfect 60-yard pass across his body whil scrambline toward the sideline. The 31 yard run Saturday night requires no explanation.

The Alabama-Florida game got out of hand for a variety of reasons. While Alabama was the better team, Florida is a much better team than the score indicates. People expecting LSU to blow out the Gators may be in for a surprise.

All I said was that the Florida schedule was harder than Bamas, and it was.  I never said it was a hard schedule.  Try to read a little more closely.  Bama played kent State and North Texas, and the Arkansas game washes with the Tennessee game.  Funny how the TDs the kid made before he hurt were "luck".  That is why they play the game.  If you have watched and written about football as long as I have, you know anything can happen, and you don't say make absurd what-if predictions.  I'm not blaming the refs in the Penn State/Indiana game, it wasn't as bad as LSU not getting the Peterson pick at Bama, but the refs were bad.

Again, in no way am I stating that Florida is better than Alabama, but with Brantley playing it would have been a much different game.
