On Tuesday Missouri told the Big 12 "I love you, but I think we should see other people." Which is generally code for "I've fallen for somebody else." Now, while Missouri hasn't officially left the Big 12 just yet, I don't think there are many people who think that the school is going to stick around once it is done looking at its options.

Now, unlike Texas or Oklahoma, losing Missouri wouldn't be a deathblow for the Big 12. Although that doesn't mean there isn't at least one school that would be a bit heartbroken to see the Tigers go, and that school would be Kansas. Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger released a statement on Tuesday night about Missouri's decision.

"We value our long-standing conference rivalry with Missouri," Zenger said in the release. "We believe the Midwest deserves a strong conference for student-athletes, fans and alumni, and it is our desire that Missouri will stay committed — as Kansas is — to the Big 12 Conference.”

I've got some bad news, Kansas. They won't.

This is the one aspect of conference realignment that really hurts. As with the possibility of Texas and Texas A&M not playing anymore once the Aggies leave, odds are the rivalry between Kansas and Missouri may die as well, as Kansas basketball coach Bill Self has already alluded to, and while that's not a rivalry that receives a lot of national attention, it's a big deal between the two states.

As someone with friends who have graduated from both schools, I can assure you that they really love to hate each other, and the idea of losing that rivalry doesn't sit well with me.

Kansas AD wants Mizzou to stay

This statement looks like KU is pleading with MU to stay, let them go...who cares if they want to go finish 8th in the SEC instead of 5th in the Big XII for a little bit more money that nobody on this board will ever see benefit them in anyway whatsoever. As far as the Big XII being a dead man walking, i don't think they're there yet for a couple of reasons. First of Texas is to arrogant and demanding to have another power conference take them and that means them and OU are committed to the Big XII for now. Another reason the conference is far from dead is the fact they are still a BCS conference with 6 of the 10 current teams being ranked in the top 25 and a couple have legit NCS chances, with that being said the conference still produces talent second only to the SEC in FB and top 3 talent in basketball as well. No other conference can say that about both major sports. TCU, BYU, Boise St., Memphis, Louisville, etc.... would all be crazy to not want to join the Big XII and fill in rather nicely for MU, A&M, Colorado, and Nebraska. Might even be an upgrade in sports.....

The "rivalry" between MU and KU is more rooted in bitterness and hatred that is completely unwarranted that it is rooted in sports.  Getting rid of the rivalry may be the best way to get rid of the assinine territorial mentality that pervades the KC metro area.

I guess I don't understand why these rivalries have to die. Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina play FSU, Georgia Tech and Clemson anually. They are dying I think because Texas and potentially, Kansas, are acting like jilted lovers. You don't have to be in the same conference to be rivals.

Brave New World

Welcome to the new era of college football, where shortsighted cash grabs take precedence over the longstanding rivalries that actually formed the underpinnings of such lucrative success. I'm a WVU fan and every rivalry I've cared about for 25 years is going out the door. Hopefully the smart guys making these decisions are as smart as they think.

Maybe The Big Ten will swoop in and nab both schools therefore preserving your rivalry while adding two AAU schools and two tv markets for The Big Ten Network.  The Big 12 is like a dead man walkin'.  If one or two of the schools they try to add, denies them, the big schools will bolt asap.  All this talk about "staying in the Big 12" and "keep the Big 12 alive" is crap.  In a 3 day span, OU's president and fball coach both said they wanted to move west then they were denied by the Pac 12 and in turn tried to keep the Big 12 alive.  These schools aren't interested in keeping the conference together, they just don't want to be the ones left out.  Mizzou is just trying to get out while the gettin' is good and I don't blame them.  Soon enough the dominoes will fall and there will be 4 superconferences and 4 mid-major conferences.  The Big 12 and the Big East are looking down the barrel at extinction.
