As reported earlier Thursday by's Brett McMurphy, TCU will be joining the Big 12 conference.

The Big 12 made the announcement official on Thursday morning, saying that it has "authorized negotiations with TCU to become the conference's tenth member." The Big 12 also announced that Missouri did not participate in the vote on the advice of legal counsel.

"These discussions with the Big 12 have huge implications for TCU," said TCU Chancellor Victor Boschini. "It will allow us to return to old rivalries, something our fans and others have been advocating for years. As always, we must consider what's best for TCU and our student-athletes in this ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics. We look forward to continuing these discussions with the Big 12."

"We’re proud that TCU has been invited to join the Big 12," said Texas AD DeLoss Dodds in a statement. "Their commitment to academics and success on the field make them an excellent fit. With a solid budget and strong financial support, they have been proactive at improving facilities. Their close proximity to all conference institutions makes for a comfortable travel situation."

When Texas A&M was going through the process of leaving the Big 12 for the SEC, for the most part the Big 12 kind of just sat there hoping that Texas A&M wouldn't leave. Which is a role that the Big East seems to have taken over now.

Well, obviously, the Big 12 isn't sitting still anymore. Missouri may not have said that it's leaving just yet, but the writing is on the wall, and this time the Big 12 is being a lot more proactive. Something that Oklahoma President David Boren alluded to in his statement about the addition of TCU.

“TCU is an excellent choice as a new member of the conference," said Boren. "They bring strong athletics and academic credentials and were enthusiastically and unanimously supported by all of the members of the conference. There could be other additions in the future.”

Adding TCU would bring the Big 12 back to 10 schools without Texas A&M, but once Missouri leaves the Big 12 will need to find another replacement. Schools that have been mentioned the most often are BYU, LouisvilleWest Virginia and Cincinnati. Accoring to the Tulsa World's Dave Sittler, Louisville is the next school in line for an invite, but it's possible that three of those four get invites, as the conference has been kicking around the idea of expanding back to 12 schools.

TCU to join the Big 12

TCU scared away Pitt and Syracuse from the Big East.  Bet they want back there now with TCU going to the Big 12.  Is Missou scared too?

Uhhh, please, NO!!!!  Their academics credentials aren't desirable.  (Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they have the worst student-athlete graduation rate in NCAA.)

Sorry!!!  I'm computer illiterate/nonfuncitional, apparently.  This comment was in reference to Boise State...NOT TCU.  I'm happy to have TCU!

I'll correct you.  Boise state made the top 5 (i'm almost positive) in student-athlete graduation rates in the NCAA a couple of months ago.  Where are on earth are you getting you're information??

TCU to join the Big 12

TCU should have been added to the Big 12 last year.  However, what this means is that the SEC may be acting like they are in control, however, their choices are dwindling for a 14th team.  The choices boil down to a Big East team which they would prefer to keep E/W balance; (WVa, Lv, Cincy), Mizzou, an ACC team (VaT, Md, FSt) which is unlikely, ND (even more unlikely) or a USA team (SMU, Houston) niether of which is competitive enough.  While the SEC acts like it is in control, it is not.  The only REAL choice is Mizzou.  While I am not in favor of the choice, it is unclear where else they can go to balance the conference.

Good - now invite BYU and Air Force and/or Louisville and let's get back to 12.   No more Texas schools - I want OU and OSU to stay in the South so I have a shot to see them play against Texas (I'm there next weekend), TCU (Ft Worth and Hour away), Baylor (2 hours) and Tech if Jerry gets off his butt and makes Tech/OSU a neutral game here in Dallas to strengthen recruiting even more for both schools now that A&M is running away.

Why is that once my Pokes start beating up on the traditional powers (Nebraska, A&M) that the schools leave?

TCU to join the Big 12

I'm an old fart and have been a TCU fan since I was a wee lad.  I've seen all the ups and downs for the Frogs over the past 50 years.  In retrospect, not getting invited to join the Big 12 when the Southwest Conference split up was the best thing that ever happened to TCU and while I'm glad to see the old rivalries rekindled it will be interesting to see how this works out long term.  In any case, in my view it's a better fit than the Big East.  Not hating on the Big East just think that college sports is a regional game and is all about regional rivalries.  Looking forward to the Big 12 .. or how ever many they end up with.

Please don't be so obviously jealous of Missouri.  If any thing, this process has shown that the Jayhawks and basketball are inconsequential.

TCU to join the Big 12

The reason the Big 12 won't expand beyond ten is because ABC/ESPN won't give the Big12 more money for the additional teams.  Pretty stupid move on their part, because the Big 12 probably won't give the next Tier 1 contract to ABC.

Likely further expansion will likely include an invitation to Louisville, a 6-7 hr drive from KC, or perhaps SMU, or Houston. Logistics & missed class time are even more important now that the NCAA has increased the GP avgs for scholies allotted. A 12-14 team max would allow for 2 divisions, a champ fball game, playing each in your div twice in hoops, and lots of room for the other div games, plus non-conf match-ups. And that would no longer include misery either. Why do business with someone who doesn't care if they screw the lights out of the conf? Hopefully SOMEONE will PLEASE invite misery, PLEEEEEASE?!
