As reported earlier Thursday by CBSSports.com's Brett McMurphy, TCU will be joining the Big 12 conference.

The Big 12 made the announcement official on Thursday morning, saying that it has "authorized negotiations with TCU to become the conference's tenth member." The Big 12 also announced that Missouri did not participate in the vote on the advice of legal counsel.

"These discussions with the Big 12 have huge implications for TCU," said TCU Chancellor Victor Boschini. "It will allow us to return to old rivalries, something our fans and others have been advocating for years. As always, we must consider what's best for TCU and our student-athletes in this ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics. We look forward to continuing these discussions with the Big 12."

"We’re proud that TCU has been invited to join the Big 12," said Texas AD DeLoss Dodds in a statement. "Their commitment to academics and success on the field make them an excellent fit. With a solid budget and strong financial support, they have been proactive at improving facilities. Their close proximity to all conference institutions makes for a comfortable travel situation."

When Texas A&M was going through the process of leaving the Big 12 for the SEC, for the most part the Big 12 kind of just sat there hoping that Texas A&M wouldn't leave. Which is a role that the Big East seems to have taken over now.

Well, obviously, the Big 12 isn't sitting still anymore. Missouri may not have said that it's leaving just yet, but the writing is on the wall, and this time the Big 12 is being a lot more proactive. Something that Oklahoma President David Boren alluded to in his statement about the addition of TCU.

“TCU is an excellent choice as a new member of the conference," said Boren. "They bring strong athletics and academic credentials and were enthusiastically and unanimously supported by all of the members of the conference. There could be other additions in the future.”

Adding TCU would bring the Big 12 back to 10 schools without Texas A&M, but once Missouri leaves the Big 12 will need to find another replacement. Schools that have been mentioned the most often are BYU, LouisvilleWest Virginia and Cincinnati. Accoring to the Tulsa World's Dave Sittler, Louisville is the next school in line for an invite, but it's possible that three of those four get invites, as the conference has been kicking around the idea of expanding back to 12 schools.

TCU to join the Big 12

Missouri is gone, they were "gone" months back when they first started talking about "exploring options".  I don't think the Big12 could lure Arkansas away from the SEC anymore than anyone would eat liver and onions for a week.

Louisville still could be a viable option.  Since the SEC doesn't want Missouri, I don't see the Big10 going after them, either.  Missouri will just have to remain in the Big12.  What are they going to do?  Go Mountain West or MAC????  Hilarious.

Have Louisville OR Iowa come to the Big12.  No one has mentioned the Hawkeyes in all this speculatory talk.  They seem to be the closest with Iowa St. in their backyard.  Big10 "stole" Nebraska.  Go after Iowa.

Big12 will be Big12, again, next year.  Everything will be righted once again.  And in 5 years we'll be used to the changes made these last couple years..Utah in the old Pac10.  Nebraska in the old Big10.  TCU in the Big12.  Pitt and Syracuse in the ACC.

Who knows, pretty soon, we might have to get used to a Bowling Green in the Big East.

TCU to join the Big 12

Lets see if your TCU,you can join the Big 12 who teams are still wanting to leave or join the Big East who is a joke(in football)? And dont give me this "well the Big East has an automatic bid to a BCS game",because everybody who is not big east homers, know that is the biggest joke of all.No disrespect to W.Virginia because they are the only team in the big east worth having.

TCU to join the Big 12

Are you referenceing TCU's student athlete graduation rate?  If so, you're way off base - TCU is recognized annually as having one of the best graduation rate's for both football and all Varsity athletics.  Most recently, in December of 2010, they were regognized as one of just four programs to rank in the top 25 of the Associated Press poll and the top 25 of the Academic Progress Rate (APR).  TCU was also cited by the AFCA for graduating at least 75 percent of its players who entered as freshmen in 2003.  Simple facts...

TCU to join the Big 12

As I think more about this situation with the Big East.. I think the Big East needs to do the following:
1. Tell Notre Dame to make a choice, they are all in (all sports, including football) or hit the door, completely.

2. Expand... invite UMass, Army, Navy, UCF, Memphis, ECU, and Marshall.

3.  Invite (for basketball reasons) Butler, VCU, George Mason, and Xavier.

What do you guys think?

TCU to join the Big 12

@TX Sports I agree completely with the first part although I doubt that they will add SMU.  SMU wants the Big 12 but I don't think the Big 12 wants SMU.  The addition of more Texas teams would not sit well with the non-Texas Big 12 teams at this point and UT doesn't want to have additional competiton for BCS Caliber recruits.  TCU was a really good fit given their recent success as a football team but SMU has never even won a conference championship in C-USA.  They played for one last year but lost to UCF.  They stand a decent chance of making it to the championship this season but until they can win a couple of C-USA championships and beat some BCS opponents they would not be a smart addition to the conference in terms of adding a team with credibility.  There is still also that stigma of adding a team that has been subjected to the death penalty.

TCU to join the Big 12

Uhhh, please, NO!!!!  Their academics credentials aren't desirable.  (Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they have the worst student-athlete graduation rate in NCAA.)

Sorry!!!  I'm computer illiterate/nonfuncitional, apparently.  This comment was in reference to Boise State...NOT TCU.  I'm happy to have TCU!

TCU to join the Big 12

Breaking news:  A source within the University of Missouri has disclosed that the Tigers are now applying for a vacancy left in the Mountain West Conference following TCU's move to the Big 12.  The source, whose identity remains anonymous, further revealed that the Mountain West Conference was Missouri's third choice after the SEC and B1G, respectively.  Details to follow as available.

TCU to join the Big 12

If the need is there TCU will play games in Jerry's World.  When the Longhorns or the Sooners visit, I'm betting the games will be played there to accomodate the larger crowds of fans.
