In an interview with local television station WMC-TV this week, Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson was asked about conference realignment rumors and his school's potential future conference affiliation.

He had this to say (emphasis added):
"We want to try to get ourselves in the best possible place," Johnson said. "Ultimately we would like to be in the SEC. That's where we think we belong geographically. We think we deserve to be."
We applaud Johnson's ambition and forward-thinkingness. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the "gentleman's agreement" in place amongst SEC schools to not admit members located in existing SEC states will no doubt prevent the conference from accepting his institution's application.

This is the only reason we can think of Memphis would not be admitted to the SEC.

Yep. The only one.

No other reasons. For Memphis not to join the SEC.

Memphis. The SEC.

Well ... maybe there's a few more reasons that that. Maybe.

R.C. Johnson was obviously on crack when he did this interview. They've got one of the worst teams in DI-A and pretty much only draw more than in the teens at home when an in-state school or a big name school comes to give them a beatdown.

The SEC won't allow Missouri to join. Why would anyone even think Memphis has a chance to join? Reallignment is about football Memphis, not basketball. If it was about basketball maybe, maybe you could talk but about football, shut up and stay in C-USA or go to the watered down Big East. What a joke?

This from a school whose football team gets more attention by a wrestler calling for the firing od their coach than anything they can do on the field. Listen little c-usa schools (Tulsa, SMU) if you think you belong in the BIG12/SEC you need to invent a time machine and go back 15 years and dump alot of time /money into your school like TCU to put yourself into position to strke while th iron is hot (TCU to the BIG12) otherwise qui blowing smoke up our kiesters with this our 1-11 schools need to pla with the big boys. Enjoy your 7 figure check for getting your azz kicked and go sit in the corner and enjoy beating the Sunbelt conference.

Best hope for Memphis is the Big East, and their time as a BCS conference is limited.

Getting so tired of these stories. NCAA should gets some stones and end all this. Regulate the size of conferences. Anything more then 10 is just a ploy for money. But in this country what else is new.
