CBSSports.com's Bruce Feldman reported that Arizona head coach Mike Stoops would be fired on Monday evening. Shortly thereafter, Arizona AD Greg Byrne confirmed the news, ending Stoops' tenure atop the Wildcats program effective immediately. Defensive coordinator Tim Kish, who has served in such a duty since Stoops came to Arizona, was named the interim head coach.

Stoops finishes his Arizona tenure with a 41-50 record. Arizona is coming off three straight bowl games, but the 2010 season ended with five straight losses, meaning that the Wildcats have won just one of their last 11 games: a 41-10 victory over FCS Northern Arizona to start the 2011 season.

To be fair to Stoops, a majority of Arizona's losses in that stretch came against ranked opponents -- the Wildcats have already played three Top 10 opponents this year -- but a 37-27 loss to previously winless Oregon State on Saturday appears to have sealed Stoops' fate.

Mike Stoops' contract was extended through 2013 in 2008, after he guided the Wildcats to their first bowl game since 1999. The Wildcats beat BYU 31-21 in the 2008 Las Vegas Bowl, but haven't won a bowl game since.

"We're appreciative of Mike's dedicated work for the Arizona Wildcats," Byrne said. "Coach Stoops had many successes as our head coach over the last eight seasons. It was a difficult decision but I feel now is the time for new leadership and direction."

In Arizona's statement, Kish said, "Today is tough day [sic] for the program. It's an important moment, for sure. I appreciate Greg's faith in me to provide leadership to our young men during this difficult time. I've been with Coach Stoops for each of his eight years here and know that we have a strong foundation for not only the future but for our immediate tasks. I know this coaching staff will work hard and support our players as we compete for the remainder of the season. We're here to help these players succeed."

Arizona said in the announcement that it was beginning it search for a new head coach immediately, and that it expects to hire a new coach after the 2011 season is over.

Not a surprise, just because he's a stoops doesn't make him a good head coach.

This was certainly coming.  0-10 against their last 10 FBS opponents gets just about any head coach fired.  Stoops brought Arizona back from the lower echelons of the Pac 10 to respectability, but he could never take that next step.  He never had a season with less than 5 losses.  He only had one win against USC, and two against the school that led to his demise yesterday, Oregon State.  If Arizona wants to challenge the likes of USC, Oregon, and even in state rival Arizona State, they are going to have to get a head coach with some name recognition.  Arizona has been known to do this, having taken a former Texas head coach (John Mackovic) and the brother of Bob Stoops as their last two coaching selections.   Mike Leach may not be as far of a reach as some think.

I have to think Mike Belotti will be in the running. He's 2+ years removed from the head job at Oregon and he has openly said on ESPN that he misses it. AZ should have no problem getting recruits with the weather, Belotti has a proven track record in the PAC-10 (12). My money is on him.

I have a question for stevephoenix: What planet do you live on?  Mike Leach's boss at Texas Tech was Gerald Myers.
Bill Byrne (Greg Byrne's dad) is the athletic director at TEXAS A & M!!!!  Hello.....  Earth to stevephoenix: Feel free to comment on issues like this when you actually know who the administrators are that are part of a specific coach's past experiences.

Stoops had plenty of time to build something, but he did not.  When I saw the Oregon St score flash across the TV screen, I looked over at my wife and said that is it for Stoops.  He absolutely had to be fired.  Good move by Arizona to do it now so they have plenty of time for a quality search.

As much as I DESPISE U of A and its fanbase, I am honestly very surprised by this. He was the only chance they have had in over a decade.

And, no way, no how does Mike Leach go there. Get ready for somebody's castoff.

Best news. U of A won't be the 10th worst team in the conference anymore. Now they will be 12th

To everyone who thinks that Mike Leach will be in hunt for the Arizona job are crazy. Leach will not even be called because we all know that his lost boss was Byrnes in which both had very harsh words for each other and we can forget about Byrnes son who is AD for UA to even call him or even hire him so let's forget Leach alright.

Can't agree with you about the Zona fans.  When you begin to rush the field when the ducks have the ball and a minute to play, you lack class and football knowledge.
Meh. Beginning to rush the field is, of course, the kiss of death. Just ask Jerry Jones whenever he comes down from his owner's box to the sidelines when it looks like the Cowboys have the game in hand. Besides, can you fault them for being excited about almost beating the mighty Oregon Ducks? Just kidding (sort of).

Maybe they are better after that slice of humble pie served courtesy the Oregon Ducks in the zona zoo a couple years ago.  I don't know.

But thank God stoops is fired.  I can evenly spread my hate to other teams in the pac instead of concentrating it on arizona and its awful program.  Nick Foles should transfer.  I'm happy for you decent Wildcat fans though... looking forward to future matchups with a less horrible person running your team.

It's time for a Pirate.. say hello to Mike Leach new U if A head coach.  They will never win the talent race, it has to be a system thing.  And it's easier to score 45 than to stop USC or Oregon fro scoring 44.
