Report: San Diego State looking for Big 12 invite

Memphis has been looking for an invitation to the SEC (really) but they're not the only program looking to take a big step up in competition.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego State is all but begging for an invite to the Big 12. Athletic director Jim Sterk has passed information about the school and surrounding television market to Big 12 officials, including interim commissioner Chuck Neinas.

“We’ve been proactive as far as getting information out and just making sure their folks know what a valuable commodity San Diego State is,” Sterk told the Union-Tribune. “We’ve been able to show how well we capture the San Diego television market in the last couple of years and have a program that’s really on the rise and have a lot of things going for it. We’re a member of the Mountain West Conference, and we think it’s a very good conference. But if things realign, you never know how the sands are moving.”

The Big 12 officially welcomed TCU to the league on Monday, adding the school in the wake of Texas A&M's departure to the SEC in 2012. The league may continue to expand, possibly back to 12 members, or choose to remain at 10. Leaders are still waiting on a decision from Missouri, which is mulling their conference affiliation options and could choose to follow the Aggies to the SEC.

BYU, Louisville and West Virginia are the schools frequently brought up if the Big 12 is to expand again but Sterk wanted to make officials aware that San Diego State is just as close geographically to schools such as Texas as BYU is.

“If they look west, who knows what happens?” Sterk said.

Neinas is familiar with the school, having advised former athletic director Jeff Schemmel to hire football coach Rocky Long in 2006 as part of his consulting business.

I prefer that the conferences are set up geographically, but if the Big 12 looks at the MWC, Boise State is a much better option.

Neinas actually advised Schemmel to hire Chuck Long in 2006, who ended up being one of the worst coachs in SDSU history.

San Diego State would make a great addition to the Big 12!  Their basketball team already appears to be on par with the other Big 12 programs and just increases the the Big 12 basketball dominance.  And the Big 12 is a great basketball conference.   I would not argue with the other named programs and their contributions to the Big 12 in maintining its basketball dominance, but the Aztecs are definitely a good fit in Big 12 basketball

The Aztec football program is not quite there, yet, but what the hey!  Who doesn't like the sound of a weekend trip every few years to Southern California?   Besides the Aztec football has seemed to make giant strides under their last two coaches and they may be middle of the road Big 12 football teams sooner than later.

Baseball, soccer (I believe their men now play in the Pac Ten), softball, women's soccer and women's basketball will all be good additions to the Big 12.

TV markets, contrary to Pac Ten propaganda, the pac ten does not own the San Diego market.  The Aztecs still do, though there is a lot of interest in both the Big Ten and Big 12 conferences down there.  This would fortify the Big 12 interest in California.  A great recruting region for all sports.  If Sourthern california keeps get hitting with disciplinary actions and UCLA does not get out of their athletic funk, the Big 12 may not only own the San Diego TV region, but the entire Southern California region by playing a handfull of games there each year.

That’s not true. You must be a troll from BYU. They have had tons of success that brought mast media success for their basketball program and have had success in the bowl game of last season. They have gotten 40k+ crowds in the stadium this season and sold out basketball games last season. SDSU has gained attention from sport media and they are greatly represented by advertisers. Totally disagree with what you said. As for the Big 12 competition, we will not be in the top 5 in the conference but somewhere in the lower-middle to middle of the Big 12. Just because SDSU is on a slump doesn’t mean they have potential and are unable to hang with the big 12. They almost came from behind to beat TCU and had their chances to beat Michigan.  Football is analytical and thus try to learn to analyze the game, rather than criticize it.

that would never work, i live in san diego and am a OU fan, unfortunately san diego state gets no love, can't remember the last time i watched a state game on TV or at the old stadium we have here. Most people are charger fans and padres fans, unless they build a new stadium and new facilities and getting the word out there with advertising and all this would never work, Plus they would get killed in the big 12, they can barely hang with the teams they play now,

San Diego State should have been added to the Pac-10.

San Diego State Aztecs do not have the fan support to meet the big 12 criteria for one thing. They play in the Western time zone for them to play at 8pm in the west that's 11 pm eastern standard time. San Diego in the Mountain West has a shot every year to be bowl eligible. The big 12 would rather have Notre Dame Fighting Irish plus Brigham Young Cougars both teams fans travel well with their teams. Louisville Cardinals possibly Iowa State Cyclones all 4 of those teams make better sense then San Diego State.

The one thing we all should face is that the landscape in college football is going to change to mega conferences and probably sooner (few months) or later (2012). A smart conference will fill out their dance card sooner. From a Big 12 point of view, adding San Diego St, BYU, Louisville, and West Virginia would be a smart move. They also should look at Boise State and Tulane (if Missouri leaves) and Notre Dame (if not Notre Dame then Nevada).

Why? Look at it from first a football view. With the afore mentioned schools, you would be in every time zone meaning that your conference would be mostly on TV from 10 AM EST on Saturday morning until 3 AM EST Sunday morning each football weekend. More TV coverage, more money, pretty simple. Second, go to the pod system for football, for the sake of arguement put the four pods like this; pod 1 - Texas, Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor; pod 2 - Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Kansas St., Iowa St., pod 3 - San Diego St., BYU, Boise St., Nevada; pod 4 - Missouri, Kansas, Louisville, West Virgia (If Missouri leaves put Tulane in pod 4 and if Notre Dame comes put them in pod 3 in place of Nevada). There are huge advantages from a pod system both from a fan standpoint and financially.

Then look at the other sports, basketball becomes a much stronger conference with Texas, Kansas, Baylor, Louisville, SDSU, BYU and maybe Notre Dame. Baseball becomes as strong as the PAC 12 and so does softball.

Then think of recuiting. What kid wouldn't want to be on TV every week in multiple time zones and when recuiting a kid say from California or the South or the East or the MidWest, that kid knows he will get to play close to home a few times if not more with the conference. Mom and Dads like that idea. Financially it is a boon for the conference. Sure the travel money goes up but the receipts go up much higher.

Fact is the Big 12 or whatever they change the name to would be truly a mega conference more so than any of the others.

Regarding VolsRBack: What does San Diego State have to offer?  Utah has a population of 2.8 million.  San Diego County has a population of 3.1 million - a better market.  Have you ever traveled to Provo?  San Diego is easier.  BYU has a home filed advantage playing at 4,500 feet.  Try catching your breath playing football or basketball.
