Memphis has been looking for an invitation to the SEC (really) but they're not the only program looking to take a big step up in competition.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego State is all but begging for an invite to the Big 12. Athletic director Jim Sterk has passed information about the school and surrounding television market to Big 12 officials, including interim commissioner Chuck Neinas.

“We’ve been proactive as far as getting information out and just making sure their folks know what a valuable commodity San Diego State is,” Sterk told the Union-Tribune. “We’ve been able to show how well we capture the San Diego television market in the last couple of years and have a program that’s really on the rise and have a lot of things going for it. We’re a member of the Mountain West Conference, and we think it’s a very good conference. But if things realign, you never know how the sands are moving.”

The Big 12 officially welcomed TCU to the league on Monday, adding the school in the wake of Texas A&M's departure to the SEC in 2012. The league may continue to expand, possibly back to 12 members, or choose to remain at 10. Leaders are still waiting on a decision from Missouri, which is mulling their conference affiliation options and could choose to follow the Aggies to the SEC.

BYU, Louisville and West Virginia are the schools frequently brought up if the Big 12 is to expand again but Sterk wanted to make officials aware that San Diego State is just as close geographically to schools such as Texas as BYU is.

“If they look west, who knows what happens?” Sterk said.

Neinas is familiar with the school, having advised former athletic director Jeff Schemmel to hire football coach Rocky Long in 2006 as part of his consulting business.

San Diego isn't a good fit geographically, but West Virginia is?  Yes SDSU is a bit further than WVU, but it's not as if WVU is in the neighborhood.

Even if we beat Michigan and TCU the PAC is never inviting SDSU. It's just a fact. it's just like The ACC and SEC not looking at other Florida schools. There are already 4 Cal schools in the PAC and they know if there was 1 more it doesn't help the conference. I don't see SDSU going to the Big-12 but would jump at the chance.

As far as another poster saying that Boise should have to travel for all their games WHY. The Big East reached out to them to see what they thought. The reason why was so that the Big-E can keep their BCS bid.

San Diego State in the Big-12 doesnt make a whole lot of sense geographically, But neither does CU in the PAC-12 or TCU to the Big East (formerly). Its about growing the conference TV markets and recruiting areas.
With that said all those moves make perfect sense. The Pac-12 would hate to have a southern california school in a rival BCS conference competing with USC and UCLA for recruits and the late night television time-slot.
I think San Diego State would be a great addition in football IF they continue to improve on the field.

From a basketball standpoint, San Diego State already has a program that regularly makes it to the postseason.

I live in Big 10 country, but to me the Big 12 ought to go after Arizona and Arizona State. I think geographically they fit better in the Big 12 and they will compete better as well. Plus what is more interesting? AZ vs Oaklahoma or AZ vs. Washington....never made sense to me.

Geographically, the only BCS conference that makes sense is the PAC12.  San Diego would be a great market for that Conference.

In fact,  SD State and Boise State would be a perfect fit for the Pac 12.

SD State would move to the Southern Division  and Boise State would play in the Northern Division.

Then cap the Conference at 14.

Agree, geographically not a fit.
Stay out west in the regional conferences.
That is what makes the games and the excitement.
This super conference stuff stinks.

Report: San Diego State looking for Big 12 invite

As I previously commented in another article, this make a lot of sense for both the Big 12 and San Diego State.  The advantages for San Diego State are obvious.  The advantages for the Big 12 should also be obvious.  First, they get a foothold in Southern California, along with a rather large T.V. market.  Next, San Diego is a beautiful city that is a huge tourist attraction.  Fans from Texas and Oklahoma would love nothing more than to travel to San Diego for an away game.  Next, Quacomm Stadium can seat 71,000 fans for football, much more than stadiums in Houston, Louisville, or even West Virginia.  If Missouri leaves, then San Diego must be considered as a viable replacement.  I am sure that Texas, who was basically forced to take TCU in as a partner, does NOT want another Texas school in the big `12.  4 is enough.

Report: San Diego State looking for Big 12 invite

First of all Memphis will get an invite to the SEC when hell freezes over. What does Memphis have to offer other then basketball? We already have 2 schools in the state of Tennessee in the SEC and we see how sorry Vanderbilt is year in and year out.Second why would the Big 12 invite San Diego St.?There not close to any of the Big 12 schools. It would cost fans of these teams a fortune to travel to California. If i were the Big 12 i would pickup BYU,Loiusville and W.Virginia.Its funny how some of these teams who have nothing to offer to a conference want to be invited to a major conference. My words to them keep dreaming!
