Report: San Diego State looking for Big 12 invite

Memphis has been looking for an invitation to the SEC (really) but they're not the only program looking to take a big step up in competition.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego State is all but begging for an invite to the Big 12. Athletic director Jim Sterk has passed information about the school and surrounding television market to Big 12 officials, including interim commissioner Chuck Neinas.

“We’ve been proactive as far as getting information out and just making sure their folks know what a valuable commodity San Diego State is,” Sterk told the Union-Tribune. “We’ve been able to show how well we capture the San Diego television market in the last couple of years and have a program that’s really on the rise and have a lot of things going for it. We’re a member of the Mountain West Conference, and we think it’s a very good conference. But if things realign, you never know how the sands are moving.”

The Big 12 officially welcomed TCU to the league on Monday, adding the school in the wake of Texas A&M's departure to the SEC in 2012. The league may continue to expand, possibly back to 12 members, or choose to remain at 10. Leaders are still waiting on a decision from Missouri, which is mulling their conference affiliation options and could choose to follow the Aggies to the SEC.

BYU, Louisville and West Virginia are the schools frequently brought up if the Big 12 is to expand again but Sterk wanted to make officials aware that San Diego State is just as close geographically to schools such as Texas as BYU is.

“If they look west, who knows what happens?” Sterk said.

Neinas is familiar with the school, having advised former athletic director Jeff Schemmel to hire football coach Rocky Long in 2006 as part of his consulting business.

Report: San Diego State looking for Big 12 invite

This is rediculous!!!!! oh wait, its all rediculous. Geographically, not a fit. Recruitmentwise and moneywise, perfect fit. This would give the Big12 a presence in California and begin to make it harder for the PAC to keep its kids at home because lets be honest, the Big12 plays PAC ball better than the PAC does.

Report: San Diego State looking for Big 12 invite

I would much rather see San Diego State in the Big 12 than BYU. As the article in the San Diego Union-Tribune points out, the distance to San Diego is no greater than the distance to BYU, apparently a leading candidate for membership, and SDSU has no objections to playing on Sundays. The blogs from SDSU fans following the article, however, indicate only about a 50/50 support for joining the Big 12 as opposed to trying to get into the PAC.

Admitting SDSU would help open a bigger recruiting market in southern California and give the California homies a second major conference from which to choose.

Report: San Diego State looking for Big 12 invite

Back in 2003-2005 the ACC raided the Big East for Miami, Virginia Tech, and Boston College.
The Big East then raided C-USA.
C-USA then raided...
By the time all the movements STOPPED, 24 teams had changed conferences and Army had become an independent.

We are still at the beginning of the current round of movements.

Who will end up where - is nothing more than a guess until it stops.

Back in 2003, the Virginia Governor Warner said he would have the state's attorney general sue the ACC if they raided the Big East.
When the deal was done, and Virgina Tech was in the ACC,... THEN Governor Warner said he had LIED.
That he had really told the ACC that the state of Virginia would sue if they did not take Virginia Tech.
Virginia residents responded by voting Governor Warner into the U S Congress.

Who will end up where this time?  Don't know. Cannot predict.  And don't believe most of what you hear until the deals are done.

Makes about as much sense as inviting Kansas to the Pac-12.

Report: San Diego State looking for Big 12 invite

Dear San Diego State: Don't call us, we'll call you. Signed: Big 12

How about a new rule. If you are more than 400 miles from the nearest school in the conference, you can join but you have to play all road games. Telling UConn, West Virginia, Notre Dame, etc. that they have to travel to Boise in the middle of winter for basketball (or for other sports) is ridiculous. If Boise State wants to join the Big East that badly, make them do all the travel. Same with San Diego State. Let's see how many geographic outliers would make the switch then.

If Rocky Long would have beat Michigan and TCU the PAC 12 would be jumping at us. It still looks like we have a long way to go with the football program (especially with a coach that makes excuses and doesn't know why his team loses). The basketball program is now, top tier, thanks to Fisher. But to get into either the PAC 12 or BIG 12 we need football to keep up.

It's probably due to Air Force's pending split for football to the Big East. The problem is that there are WAY TOO MANY PEOPLE IN LINE for the Big 12 to chose from.  Potentially BYU, West Virginia, Louisville, Cincy, Houston, Rice, SMU, Tulane and Boise State to name a few with realistically the first 3 or 4 on the list there having the best shot at getting in.  Air Force has already turned down the Big 12 so at least they are out.  A lot of this all hinges on whether or not Mizz will get enough votes for the SEC to make the move.  This does not bode well for the Mountain West conference though.

Report: San Diego State looking for Big 12 invite

We all know who built SDSU into what it is today.  If Michigan makes the Rose Bowl and SDSU gets a major conference invitation, I will subscribe to the popular theory that Brady Hoke excretes gold.
