Mike Stoops
is suddenly out at Arizona. But if his older brother has any say in it, he'll be able to find a soft professional landing in Oklahoma.

That's what Bob Stoops told reporters at his Tuesday press conference, saying that if everything worked out, he'd be open to hiring Mike onto his staff in Norman.

"Sure, if I had enough money to," Bob said when asked if he might bring his brother aboard. "He's going to have a lot of opportunities."

That's likely true -- see the third Stoops coaching brother, Mark Stoops, engineering the Florida State defense as the Seminoles' coordinator in Tallahassee -- and Bob won't be able to offer him the defensive coordinator's chair with Brent Venables well established as the Sooners' DC. To come to Norman, Mike would likely have to accept a role as a position coach ... and likely a salary well below what he might be able to make on the market as a coordinator or head coach.

But it's easy to see why Bob would welcome Mike's return. The two worked together on the Oklahoma staff from 1999 to 2003, a four-year span in which Mike's defenses helped the Sooners win one national championship and play for another. If Mike is looking for job stability and a familiar environment first and a fat salary second (which, after his abrupt firing in Arizona, isn't that farfetched), a reunion is at least a possibility.

But as bob said: Mike's going to have opportunities. And the likelihood is that he'll find a higher-paying one somewhere outside of his brother's shadow.

Oldschool4U:

There is no doubt that KU needs a DC; what with Coach Torbush having to retire due to illness and two position coaches elevated suddenly to co-DCs, this would be a good move for KU; Coach Stoops could come right away, because the need is there.

I guess after listening-reading stuff from so-called insiders who know about U of A, this points to another school in this conference that chooses not to support its football program enough to truly compete, but still holds its hand out for the TV money and expects its head football coach to win. I guess Larry Smith & Dick Tomey are about as good as it will ever get until this school's leadership attitude changes! Someone said U of A is becoming another basketball preferred school like UCLA. Anyone have a different approach to this?

HoboDuck - You seem to know alot about Mike Stoops and his coaching form.  What position did you play for the Wildcats?  As I thought, a duck quacking about something he knows very little about.

This idiot is/was out of control.  His sideline antics is partially the reason he is no longer with the Cats.

His on field treatment of players such as grabbing them by the shirt collar and yelling and spitting in the faces is undeserved.  I'm actually sorry to see him go because he was so entertaining and laughable on the sidelines.  Running on to the field and spitting in the faces of Officials (can't figure out why he was never flagged or ejected) is also unacceptable.  You motivate players in many ways.....belittlement should be way down the list.

He unquestionably knows a little bit about football.  That's a no brainer.....but there is more to it than X's and O's when dealing with young people, the public and the media.  He was given fair warning to shape up and evidentally he could not take the hint.

No one is bigger than the game.  He was a embarassment to himself, the team and NCAA sports.  The Cats will do well without him.

OU should pass on his employment.

How about D-coordinator at Iowa? I do think it's time for some changes there.

Kansas Jayhawks.
Perfect situation at Kansas as the d-cooridinator.
Chuck Long as o-cooridinated.
Turner Gill head coach.
Rock Chalk Jayhawks.
Which them take off.

Go get him T.G.

Arizona will come out to be the loser in this situation.
That's happened a lot to Arizona during their history.

Where would we put him?  We have a hella good defensive coordinator.  What make him the co-co-co defensive coordinator/assistant head coach?
