LSU's Mathieu, Ware, Simon suspended for Auburn

Reports out of Baton Rouge are that Tyrann Mathieu's Heisman campaign is about to hit a major speed bump--and that his team may be about to have a more difficult time with visiting Auburn Saturday than initially thought.

According to the Associated Press, a "person familiar with the decision" has indicated that Mathieu is one of three players who will be suspended for (at the minimum) LSU's game against the visiting Tigers this Saturday. Also due to sit is starting tailback and leading rusher Spencer Ware and nickelback Tharold Simon.

At his Wednesday evening press conference, Les Miles declined to confirm or deny the reports. He said all healthy roster members had practiced.

"There is no real information about any specific player," he said. "When there is information to share, I will. The problem with this is it's internal. I am not inclined to be forthcoming with any information on this."

The Daily Reveille, the LSU student newspaper, reported that Mathieu and Ware will be suspended as a result of failing a random drug test. According to a source who spoke to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the players tested positive for "synthetic marijuana." At this time there is no indication the suspensions will be for longer than one game.

The good news for LSU is that while both Mathieu and Ware have made major impacts on the Bayou Bengals' 7-0 start, Les Miles has solid options for replacing both. Even with Simon out as the planned "next man up" at corner, Miles can call on experienced senior Ron Brooks to handle that position, or move either Eric Reid or Brandon Taylor from safety to corner and start the other. And against Auburn's 106th-ranked passing offense, the secondary may not be tested much anyway.

There's plenty of depth at tailback, too. Second-leading rusher Michael Ford is already averaging more than a yard more per carry than Ware and third-stringer-in-name-only Alfred Blue has rushed for better than 150 yards the past three weeks.

The bad news for LSU is that Brooks (or a moonlighting Reid or Taylor) is simply not Mathieu, and Ford and Blue are simply not Ware. That's not likely to matter when it comes to the final outcome Saturday, at least according to Vegas; LSU is installed as a 21-point-plus favorite.

But things might not be as comfortable as Miles or the Death Valley crowd would like, and after a season already plagued with off-field distractions like the Jordan Jefferson bar fight and Russell Shepard suspension, Miles would no doubt have preferred to ramp up toward the Alabama megatilt with his team's focus solely on football. Even if the suspensions prove to be of the one-game variety, that doesn't look like it's going to be the case.

Suspending players for a game in which you are a 21 point favorite says about as much as suspending a scrub for a big game.  Now, if the players miss the Alabama game, THAT will be saying something.

If the suspensions turn out to be multiple games and these guys end up missing the Alabama game, it could definitely be the edge 'Bama needs to come out on top, costing LSU a chance at an undefeated season and a BCS championship.  This mistake could turn out to be something these guys will regret the rest of their lives, not to mention the level of infamy they will live in forever in the eyes of all LSU fans.  The stupidity of these guys, given the possible ramifications for their team and themsleves, is breathtaking.

HAHAHAHHA, dude are you serious?  If AJ McCArron had crushed some Marine's vertabrae with his foot, he'd be suspended for AT THE VERY LEAST a full season, if not completely kicked off the team.

Do you realize that LSWho has the repuataion around the SEC of trying to cut corners in regards to punishment so they can have their best team on the field at all times.  Lets face it, these kids will probably get suspended for the AU game, and will be back and starting for Nov. 5th.

Win at ALL costs, thats grass eater's mantra!

Unfortunately with 5 star players you get 5 star arrogance and attitude.  Players are told that they are the best of the best and they start believing it and then suddenly get it into their heads that they can do no wrong (a quick look at the NFL will prove that 1000 times over).  As for the 21 point spread over Auburn unfortunately that has to do with the fashion in which Arkansas beat the crappola out of them and the perception that LSU could easily handle Arkansas.  I concur it is not wise to make such conclusions, but that is where the stat is coming from.

I think LSU is the only team in college football that self-punishes players with any consistency, and most LSU fans wouldn't have it any other way.
You think wrong.

Sorry- but Vandy is the most respected program in the SEC

No, they are not.  Vandy is the best academic institution in the SEC, but that has little to do with respect when posting on a sports site.  Their player was just suspending for putting a cheap shot on a UGA player.  No respect there.  No offense to Vandy, but what have they ever done to make them the most respected program in the conference.  Short answer, nothing.

Well, this sucks.  If the players knew there would be random drug tests and failing one could lead to a suspension, then they should stay off whatever it is they are taking as football should be their priority now, not partying.

Two other comments.  First off, Mathieu is not a serious Heisman candidate, so I don't know why that is even mentioned.  Secondly, I am surprised LSU was made a 21 point favorite over Auburn.  I know they are not the same team as last year, but that is a big spread.
