LSU's Mathieu, Ware, Simon suspended for Auburn

Reports out of Baton Rouge are that Tyrann Mathieu's Heisman campaign is about to hit a major speed bump--and that his team may be about to have a more difficult time with visiting Auburn Saturday than initially thought.

According to the Associated Press, a "person familiar with the decision" has indicated that Mathieu is one of three players who will be suspended for (at the minimum) LSU's game against the visiting Tigers this Saturday. Also due to sit is starting tailback and leading rusher Spencer Ware and nickelback Tharold Simon.

At his Wednesday evening press conference, Les Miles declined to confirm or deny the reports. He said all healthy roster members had practiced.

"There is no real information about any specific player," he said. "When there is information to share, I will. The problem with this is it's internal. I am not inclined to be forthcoming with any information on this."

The Daily Reveille, the LSU student newspaper, reported that Mathieu and Ware will be suspended as a result of failing a random drug test. According to a source who spoke to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the players tested positive for "synthetic marijuana." At this time there is no indication the suspensions will be for longer than one game.

The good news for LSU is that while both Mathieu and Ware have made major impacts on the Bayou Bengals' 7-0 start, Les Miles has solid options for replacing both. Even with Simon out as the planned "next man up" at corner, Miles can call on experienced senior Ron Brooks to handle that position, or move either Eric Reid or Brandon Taylor from safety to corner and start the other. And against Auburn's 106th-ranked passing offense, the secondary may not be tested much anyway.

There's plenty of depth at tailback, too. Second-leading rusher Michael Ford is already averaging more than a yard more per carry than Ware and third-stringer-in-name-only Alfred Blue has rushed for better than 150 yards the past three weeks.

The bad news for LSU is that Brooks (or a moonlighting Reid or Taylor) is simply not Mathieu, and Ford and Blue are simply not Ware. That's not likely to matter when it comes to the final outcome Saturday, at least according to Vegas; LSU is installed as a 21-point-plus favorite.

But things might not be as comfortable as Miles or the Death Valley crowd would like, and after a season already plagued with off-field distractions like the Jordan Jefferson bar fight and Russell Shepard suspension, Miles would no doubt have preferred to ramp up toward the Alabama megatilt with his team's focus solely on football. Even if the suspensions prove to be of the one-game variety, that doesn't look like it's going to be the case.

Ware looks like he is high all the time.
Maybe he can claim medicinal or religious use--  he is Rastafarian, right?
I just hope he is back for Bama to outperform Richardson in the Tiger victory.

Honey Badger just too full of himself; he needs to settle down.
Maybe Ware's stash will help him chill

HAHAHAHHA, dude are you serious?  If AJ McCArron had crushed some Marine's vertabrae with his foot, he'd be suspended for AT THE VERY LEAST a full season, if not completely kicked off the team.

Do you realize that LSWho has the repuataion around the SEC of trying to cut corners in regards to punishment so they can have their best team on the field at all times.  Lets face it, these kids will probably get suspended for the AU game, and will be back and starting for Nov. 5th.

Win at ALL costs, thats grass eater's mantra!
I like fiction as much as the next guy pickleblower, but maybe you don't realize that the felony was dropped against Jefferson because he DEFENDED himself.  How did you miss it, where you in prison?  A drunk thug who had been kicked out of the bar earlier that night for assaulting a WOMAN came back and took a swing unprovoked and unannounced at Jefferson.  The other thug in the truck that trid to run over the crowd was indeed rightously and justifiably beat down, but Jefferson had no part of that.  In fact the video now out shows it wasn't even Jefferson that kicked the drunken dishonorably discharged thug punk marine.

LSU does not have that reputation either.  See what else you fling up, I doubt any of it sticks.

If the same thing had happened at Alabama it would have been covered by the local authorities like it was for Ingram, and there wouldn't have been a suspension at all.  Not to mention McCarron would have lost the fight.

Say hi to your Uncle-sister for me.

To skreffty:  Looks like a team full of thugs and drug abusers in Baton Rouge.  Or is this a case of better performance through chemistry?

To LSUSMC & rational Tigers:  Tough break.  I know all too well how bad it sucks when a few immature kids let down the rest of the team.

Yeah, skrefty. Auburn didn't open it's doors to the NCAA and take accountability or anything.

Actually sucks LSU loses some big names but good on LSU for doing the right thing, I suppose.

But you can uplift your program without crapping on others. No, really! It's possible.

Best of luck to your Tigers...against Bama. Apparently they won't need it against us scrubs...

I think LSU is the only team in college football that self-punishes players with any consistency, and most LSU fans wouldn't have it any other way.
You think wrong.
Welcome to football Ward!  May I make a suggestion, since you are obviously new to the game, maybe do some research before flapping the gums okay?  In the SEC, suspensions mean more since our players only get 4 years to play, unlike Jason White who somehow got 7 seasons at Mobilhoma.  Anyone even remotely familiar with the football knows that LSU has a zero tolerance policy.

Just compare us to Oregon (who doesn't even use drug tests - see the QB).  That kid was cauggt with pot and didn;t miss a snap.  Florida seemingly promotes guys based on number of arrests, Ohio State is just one big merchandise resale scam, Miami (nothing more needs to be said), etc.

Jordan Jefferson missed 4 games for defending himself as it turns out.  Didn't matter to Miles, he didn't wait for the grand jury to throw out the felony.  Just like here, Miles doesn't coddle his guys, he teachess them to learn from their mistakes and grow from that.  I know it seems odd to fans of other teams that a coach exists who actually cares about his players I know, but Miles does indeed care.

Let me last say how proud I am of my fellow LSU fans.  No excuses, no conspiracy homerism, etc like we have heard out of almost every Ohio State fan, Miami fan, Auburn, USC fan, etc.  We admit our fault and want the program to fix the problem rather than covering up ala Tressell.

That my friends is what you call an accountable program and fanbase, and I am proud.

(Assuming these suspensions will be due to marijuana use)

The SEC needs to take the PAC-10's approach to dealing with athletes failing drug tests - have the state legislatures legalize dru
g use. Is an athlete at USC or Colorado who tests positive for marijuana considered "failing" a drug test ??

If your going to be a championship team then you cant have your top players doing dumb things off the field. After seeing LSU first hand last week kick our butt(tennessee) i think they will still beat Auburn.

Well, looks like Les Miles eats grass and his players smoke grass.
It could be worse, he could jump jobs and lie to his players constantly.  Now that Shula's players are finally gone let's see what Saban can do.

Seems like the LSU Team is nothing but a bunch of ThugsEmbarassed  Pretty Embarrassing Program to have such Good Talent.
How cute.  An Arkansas fan not only has access to a computer, but is a decent speller.  Grammar not so much, but considering the source not that bad.  Keep up the literacy efforts hogs54!

Sorry- but Vandy is the most respected program in the SEC
Um, not after that scumbag Logan Stewart kid tried to rip up the Georgis kids knee, and vandy's scumbag coach defended it.  They are now on the bottom of the list for those who like accountability.
