Big Ten suspends MSU DE Gholston for one game

In the third quarter of Michigan State's 28-14 victory over Michigan last Saturday, MSU star defensive end Will Gholston was seen throwing a punch at Michigan lineman Taylor Lewan, connecting somewhere around Lewan's neck or lower face mask. The incident drew a 15-yard penalty against Gholston, but he wasn't ejected, and Mark Dantonio left him in the game for the rest of the afternoon. Similarly, Dantonio left Gholston atop the Spartan depth chart this week heading into a critical battle with Wisconsin.

The Big Ten wasn't exactly impressed with Dantonio's approach to discipline, it seems, because the conference announced today that Gholston would be suspended for one game after the incident:

The Big Ten determined that Gholston’s actions at the end of the third quarter of the Michigan contest violated Big Ten Conference Agreement 10.01.1.A.1 - “Striking or attempting to strike or otherwise physically abusing an official, opposing coach, spectator or athlete.” The conference office also publicly reprimanded Gholston for his actions.

The Big Ten Sportslike Conduct Agreement states that “It shall be the responsibility of each member university to ensure that all of its students and all individuals employed by or directly associated with it comport themselves in a sportslike manner when representing their university, especially at intercollegiate athletic contests.”

After the Michigan-MSU game, we groused that Mark Dantonio's reputation as a disciplinarian didn't match his record, and that his stated policy of "zero tolerance" has now become more of a running gag than an actual aspect of Dantonio's approach to running his team. This latest move by Dantonio -- to figuratively punt on suspending a player who punched an opponent on the field of play, and make the Big Ten take care of it -- sounds much more like a coach concerned with winning the next game than one willing to take discipline seriously.

And hey, if Dantonio wants to leave player suspensions up to the conference, that's fine; that's exactly why the Big Ten has this policy in place. But it still doesn't paint MSU's program in a positive light when it comes to keeping the Spartans on the straight and narrow path.

magic33: "But your present sucks."

You got that part right!

Easy, though, fellow -- St. Dantonio's rugged jaw and habit of waving around the Good Book (a la Jim Tressel) is going to carry him only so far. One of these days he'll get in some sort of trouble. So, too, will the Sparty football program.

It's too bad, because he is doing a lot of things very well (changing the Sparty mentality, fielding generally well-coached teams, and, above all else, identifying talent in the Midwest 3-star run-off).

Sorry, but Hoke's trajectory (last weekend's game aside) is looking pretty sweet. Enjoy the prosperity while it lasts (next year, I think, and possibly the year after that).

Wow, H2S, you're a cool guy. You used *panties* in a sentence.

Also, 1977 called, and it wants its lame put-down of UMich (scUM! Huh, huh!) back.

BTW, I've been outside the state for several years. No particular loyalty to either school ...

You're living up to all the worst Sparty stereotypes, though. (It is also true that there are some classic UMich jacka$$es posting here.)

If the next game was against Eastern Michigan or someone at that level, Dantonio would have 'stepped up' and done what was right. But seeing who was next on the schedule, he thought it couldn't hurt by trying to 'slip' Gholston by on the depth charts. Not only were the B1G ready to react justly, now Dantonio has, if he didn't already, a 'win-at-all-cost' reputation. The league will keep a 'closer' eye on MSU and it's behavior in the future, seeing that the coaches 'walk' is a whole lot different than his 'talk'. Trust me, with the long, deep history of behavior problems in the MSU football program, this situation will come up again a lot sooner than later. Just be a pedestrian and wait for the first show to drop. Way to go, Dantonio!!

What a complete waste of space.  This article is inflammatory and garbage.  The conference was going to suspend a player the next game anyway.  A "suspension" by Dantonio would have accomplished exactly bupkis.  A hollow symbolic gesture that would have also been picked apart by internet "authors" with nothing better to do.

No, not a Spartan fan either.  Just hate worthless articles and writers who misuse their position.

Lest we forget that Dantonio is a Tressel disciple.  He learned this method of discipline from the best.

Of course you like recent history in this instance. It's one of the few instances in history that actually favors MSU.

As far as what is "really happening", Michigan was terrible under Rich Rodriguez, that's no secret.  So MSU fans get to hang their hat on beating three very bad Michigan squads, and maybe one good one, depending on how UM finished this season.

I'm impressed with you - actually I'm not.

Glad that you are so enamored with the historical record.  I'm not.  I like recent history; it is a better reflection of what is really happening.

Right now, MSU is better than Michigan.  Refute that.

so, a Gholston-less MSU hosts mighty clean-playing, straight shooting national powerhouse Wisconsin on Saturday...and the whole nation will be watching what the whole nation expects to be a blowout for Bucky (gawd, that so many scUM panties are already wet with anticipation of seeing their owner - owned, is just plain hilarious.)

but...

what if Sparty wins?

Aw man.. you sure showed me. Gotta love when someone yells "scoreboard" on an internet message board.

Series since 1958 is 32-20-2, and yes that includes this season.
