While Missouri hasn't made it official yet, it's generally accepted knowledge that the school will announce that it's leaving the Big 12 for the SEC at some point in the near future. Which means that the Big 12 is already putting plans together to find a replacement for Missouri should it leave, and rumors have West Virginia as being the favorite to be that tenth school.

Something that one Big 12 school official confirmed to the Austin American Statesman's Kirk Bohls this weekend, and the official also went on to say that the Big 12 would be better off with West Virginia than it would be with Missouri.

“I’d say West Virginia is the leader in the clubhouse," the school official told Bohls. "I think we’ll come out better than before. I’d rather be with someone who wants to be with our conference than anybody who doesn’t.”

“West Virginia has better football than Missouri, better basketball than Missouri, a better budget than Missouri and more passion among its fans than Missouri. They’re better, anyway you turn ‘em. The travel’s not good but that’s it.”

Well that's no way to convince Missouri to stay.

Bohls also talked to another Big 12 administrator who wasn't nearly as rough on Missouri, and also said he's not sure that West Virginia would be the best candidate to replace it.

“The only place where there’s an advantage for West Virginia is better football,” the second official said. “Their academics is not as strong. If there’s any thought about what’s best for the student-athlete, we’ll go with Louisville.”

So the two likely candidates to replace Missouri are still West Virginia and Louisville, and the favorite depends on who you ask. So all we really know at this point is that Missouri is going to leave and that the Big East is squirming.

The Missouri Tiger men's basketball team has had 22 NCAA tournament appearances, more than UWV

what's uwv?  if you're referring to wvu then bad news.  they have 24 ncaa tourney appearances.

What a joke, Blah, Blah, Blah...you just lost your second best academic instituion and all the Big 12 can talk about is who is better in football and basketball.  MIssouri has a larger enrollment, it is one of only six public universities in the United States with a school of medicine, veterinary medicine, engineering, agriculture, and law all on one campus, The Missouri School of Journalism is the oldest formal journalism school in the world, their endowment US$n974.9 million vs. ONLY 406 million for UWV, and The Missouri Tiger men's basketball team has had 22 NCAA tournament appearances, more than UWV but the Big 12 Officials are right, they do not need a solid academic instituion like Missouri, hey maybe they will also invite another school that is not in the AAU, nice conference, LOSERS!

I just hope the Big 12 takes West Virginia and Louisville. Whatever it takes to get Pittsburgh and Syracuse playing in the ACC next year. Big East sucks at Football and makes it hard to recruit for Pittsburgh even with a decent prospect base. I will miss Big East Basketball.

Penn State and or Notre Dame to the ACC I just dont see that happening. Notre Dame still think they are this great program and them days are long gone. As for Penn State I've heard that this floating around but tough to leave the Big 10. It is rumored that they are upset that Ohio State and Michigan never wanted them in the conference in the 1st place. Where does a rumor like this come from. I would love to see Penn State in the ACC but I just dont think it's realistic.

West Virginia is going to be the team screwed unless they get the Big 12. The fanbase is a constantly doing things to give the programs a black eye. It's a party town with bad academics. I hope they get ACC but see them in the Big 12

WVU will be a fantastic choice for whichever conference chooses them.  They bring with them a tradition of competing at the highest level and they buy their alotment of tickets to away games and bowl games and they travel.  Every conference wants their seats filled every Saturday and WVU will get this done.  Folks in the Big 12 are already familiar with our two coaches of the sports leading to the realignment as Coach Holgorsen spent time at Texas Tech and Oklahoma State and Huggins was at Kansas State.  To say WVU would be an upgrade in competitive athletics if Missouri leaves is a gigantic understatement.

I JUST SPIT OUT MY DRINK.....

"most prestigous conference...."  oh good lord, someone has their narrow blinders on again.....i have come to believe that it's just in the water!  i quit along time ago with the "conference leech" people.   Grow some and offer constructive criticism regarding an individual team!  the nation is exhausted of hearing about the conference.....only 3 teams in it are worth a s**t........bored outta my mind with that.....as many are!   biggest naive circle jerk in any sport history ever!

More ignorant unnamed gabbing by the most Soap Opera drama queen conference in sports. How come every source of every story  never has a name with in when it comes to the Big xii, when you treat the rest of your conference like crap to pamper a few you will end up looking like the big xii, UC and Nebraska were tired of it, now its TAM and MU. This could continue until the only ones left in the big xii is texas and ou... tech and osu would stay with their big brothers next door. Both MU and WVU are good programs, but wondering if you are going to have a conference every year gets old. If MU does go to the SEC I wouldn't blame them, because 3 months ago, texas and ou wanted out too...

Wow....the SEC would have 3 Tigers then and all in the SEC west?  Or does one go to the east?  With Mizzou being my grad school, I almost have to continue rooting for them if they go to the SEC, but that would practically make me an SEC homer.....

Agreed-West Virginia is bottom rung in academics, but Louisville is definately not any better-but then again is the big 12 looking for or caring about high academic qualities? I don't think so-if they were they'd be courting Rice.
