On Tuesday CBSSports.com's Brett McMurphy reported that the Big 12 had invited West Virginia to join the conference in the event that Missouri left for the SEC, and that West Virginia had accepted the invitation. A report that was confirmed by multiple outlets throughout the day.

Well, this is the world of conference realigment, and in the world of conference realignment things happen and then don't happen before happening again or not. Then you wake up in an alley somewhere with no recollection of how you got there or why you're suddenly missing a kidney.

So of course there was a report on Wednesday from the West Virginia Metro News saying that the done deal may not be a done deal after all, and that Louisvillecould be replacing Missouri in the Big 12.
As of late yesterday afternoon, WVU had received a verbal invitation to the Big 12 and had accepted. Plans were in the works for a news conference Wednesday to make the announcement.

But sources say the process hit a “bump in the road” last night.  WVU was apparently notified by the Big 12 that it needed “more information” from WVU and that there would be a vote by the Big 12 Board, perhaps on Monday.

There is speculation that the “bump” was a push by Louisville.
So what's the problem? Well, it's not so much that Louisville made some kind of last minute presentation to the Big 12 or anything as much as it's the fact that the schools aren't all in agreement that West Virginia is the better choice, as Brett McMurphy documented on Wednesday.

You may remember that on Monday, while one Big 12 administrator was talking about how much better West Virginia would be for the Big 12 than Missouri, another conference administrator was of the belief that Louisville was the better choice.

I know, the fact that the members of the Big 12 don't all agree on something shocks me too.

Take 'em both and Cincinnati too. It becomes the death blow to the Big East as a football conference (thus strengthening the Big XII in the process as a viable football conference) and giving either WVU or Louisville some closer schools to cut doen on travelling costs.

Hard to believe that Big 12 is actually wanting Louisville, WV or even Cincinnati
no sir maybe not in football except that louisville will rise and be very good in a couple years charlie strong is a damn good recruiter and in basketball this year louisville would steam roll the big 12 cinci would play in its title game and wvu would compete

Not so fast on West Virginia to the Big 12

"...basketball schools in the Big East always kick their butts around..."?!?!  Really?!  Maybe you should check your facts before spouting off so unintelligently!  WVU's basketball program has been one of the winningest D-1 programs in recent NCAA tourney history, including a conference title and appearance in the Final Four in BY FAR the toughest basketball conference in the nation.  I would go so far as to say the the WVU basketball team has been more competitive/successful on a national scale than the football program over the past 7 years or so.

Not so fast on West Virginia to the Big 12

Look, there is no pressure for conferences to add teams and I think the Big 12 finally understands. Leverage rests with the conferences so they need not add, just to add.  Why would the Big 12 be in a hurry to replace Missouri if they leave? The teams aren't going any where and there are plenty to choose from. Louisville, WVU, Cincy, Boise, BYU, etc. There will be opportunities for the schools if they are good enough during the 12 team to 16 team expansions. Patience is key.

The pressure is on the AD's to find a spot in the duck duck goose game. However, making a move to a conference where your closest competitor is 600 miles away, is not a good business decision. Football in 5 years will not resemble what we have now. The NCAA will be on the outside looking in. The schools left out at the end should refuse to contract with the AQ schools for out of conference games unless they get a piece of the bowl pie. That will pressure the major conferences to include versus exclude the borderline schools. I didn't mention BCS, because that will not look as it does today either. Be ready for a playoff system in 5 years!

Not so fast on West Virginia to the Big 12

WVA no longer plays VT because of Travel costs.  VT is in Virginia and Morgantown is in WEST Virginia!!!.  That is why they are moving to Big 12 to play Texas, Oklahoma etc because they are more natural western rivals. Gosh some people just don't get it!!!

rshoots,
You are an idiot. WVU no longer plays VT because Beamer will not allow it. He claims it is because there is to much animosity between the fanbases. You should actually find out what the truth is before you go running your mouth off.

Does the Big 12 have any idea whats going on.No wonder the teams left 2 years ago, there like the Key Stone Cops.
Yes, they know they have no way to turn and are trying to save face.  Sad desperation.  They actually trash Colorado, Neb, A&M and now Mizzou. Now we know why Pac12 did not want them.
