As first reported by's Brett McMurphy on Friday morning, the Big 12 has invited West Virginia to join the conference and West Virginia accepted the invitation, informing the Big East of the decision on Friday.

The move is now official as the Big 12 has released a statement about West Virginia.

"The Big 12 Presidents and Chancellors are excited to welcome another outstanding institution to the Conference," said Burns Hargis, Chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors in the release. "The addition of West Virginia, while expanding the reach of the Big 12, brings an impressive institution with esteemed academics and a proud athletic tradition into the Conference. This is another step in building a strong foundation for the future of the Big 12."

"The Big 12 is a perfect fit for West Virginia University," said WVU President Dr. James P. Clements. "It is a strong conference that, like WVU, values quality academic and athletic programs, and has a great tradition of success. This is a very exciting time for WVU and Mountaineer nation. I am confident that the future of WVU athletics has never been more promising."

West Virginia to the Big 12
What is not so clear at this point is when West Virginia will be joining the Big 12, According to the Big 12's release on Friday, the school would become a member of the conference beginning on July 1, 2012. However, the Big East said on Friday that it plans on holding West Virginia to the same 27-month notice that it is holding Pitt and Syracuse to. If that is the case, then West Virginia can't join the Big 12 until 2014.

During a conference call on Friday afternoon announcing the deal, West Virginia said that it plans on being in the Big 12 by July 2012, but it's not official as of yet. From Chip Patterson's post:
Both [athletic director Oliver] Luck and [President James] Clements repeatedly used the target date "July 1, 2012" as the school's expected arrival in the Big 12. When multiple questions were posed to West Virginia's leadership on how they planned to leave before the completion 27-month period - the response was predictably vague.

"Our team and their team were in discussion today, tying to make that happen," Luck said of the negotiations with the Big East office.
How West Virginia would go about that, the odds are that the answer is money. The Big East may be willing to let the Mountaineers leave early if the school pays far more than the $5 million exit fee. What exactly the amount would be for that, well, as Luck said above, those discussions are currently being held.

Of course, this does not answer every question about this announced move. Generally over the last few weeks when West Virginia was a rumored target of the Big 12, it was always with the caveat that the conference wouldn't bring in another school unless Missouri left the conference first. Well, as of the news that West Virginia had accepted an invitation on Friday, Missouri had yet to announce that it was leaving for the SEC.

Though it's possible that Missouri's announcement could be coming in the next couple of days.

Big 12 makes West Virginia official

You are rright Shadow_Boxer, it makes no sense.  But, if we stay in the BE, we lose Holgerson in a few years, if not sooner.  The money is oging to be better too.

As for the jerks from Maine, pitt and Louisville making comments and telling lies......I graduated from WVU in 1980 and we burned a lot of couches back then.  it is a tradition that does not hurt anyone.  And we were stupid enough to burn our own couches, not someone elses.  And, I've been to games at other schools.  Fans from pitt are the most vulger of all.  The Rutgers fans are just plain rude.  Not all of them.  But, it only takes a few to damage an entire schools reputation.  So quit your finger pointing.  It's bogus.  Hideous stuff happens on all campuses, all the way down to Div. III where my sons played.  Go experience the world before you comment.

This is clearly a marraige of necessity that will not last a long time.  I think the B12 and WVU are both probably looking at this as a temporary arrangement.   That being said, this is still probably the most mutually beneficial and logical thing both parties could have done.

From the B12's side WVU is the best available school out there in football and basketball excluding BYU which has other issues.  Good programs with decent fanbases.  WVU will not be going to BCS games for a while but they should be quite competitive too.  Basketball they will also be a force.  The travel of course will be an issue for other sports but I'm sure they have taken that into account.

From the WVU side I am confident they would have preferred the ACC(which is too logical but what does that matter) or SEC however they will step into one of the four top conferences so they win big too.

It will buy the B12 a strong program and WVU a strong home for six years until Texas has the LHN going which will mean they may go indy or reshop themselves and see if anyone else want them at that time.

Congrats to WVU and B12.  I think this is a temporary but good move and probably the best move for each.

The Big 12 (minus 2) isn't finished expanding yet.  I think it is plainly obvious Louisville is next to get an offer.  However, I thnik the offer will be extended with another school, bringing the number to 12.  then, next year, I think the Big 12 raids another conference or two to get to 16.  Hopefully, they balance the country by bringing in Boise St. and BYU to offset WVU and Louisville.

I am not suprised by WVU going elsewhere from the Big East.  Just the part about going next year.  I smell a big lawsuit out there.  Injunctionsa and all.  If the do leave early, I hope it is for $15 million at least.  Pitt and Syr will do the same thing.  I don't like the 27 months requirement personally, as it just makes for a lame duck situation.  I'd hate for any of these three to win a conference championship in the Big East before they do leave.  As for the fans, there are good and bad everywhere.  Hopefully nothing gets as bad as that Giants fan at Dodger stadium.

Have to agree with you, redbird, on all counts.  WVU fans in all sports tend to misunderstand that a "hostile environment" doesn't have to be a shamelessly antisocial one!

Now i'm certain that there are some WVU fans who will roll out of the army cot they share biblically with their siblings to retort that "every fan base has a few miscreants (sorry, they wouldn't use that word . . . replace it with 'bad eggs') and that we "shouldn't judge an entire group by the actions of a few," blah, blah, blah.  But redbird is exactly right on the mark.  The out of state tags on my car earned me a broken outside mirror and deep keying.  And I parked legally outside of the stadium!  And I went to SUPPORT them!  What these fans throw is deadly, what they shout is usually racist (those Texans should like that!), and their own more rational fans, coaches, players, announcers, etc.,  do absolutely nothing to discourage this type of behavior.  Quite the contrary, they applaud it! I'm pretty certain that any of the WVU fans who can afford to travel to support the team will find much more civil accommodation on the whole than they themselves offer.

That said, while there is no logical, geographical connection for adding the Mountaineers to the Big 12, and it certainly doesn't link them to any really extraordinary, untapped TV market (Pittsburgh?), they have exceptional athletes and will definitely be competitive right out of the chutes. It will be interesting.

I have never in my entire life ever seen fans like WV fans.  They are rude, inconsiderate, and just plain out right nasty

Redbird, you are quite correct in your analysis of WVU fans and each of the incidents you cite occur in just about every game to many visitors.  Also, the town fathers have now made sofa burning in public a felony.  This is good, but at the same time they now permit the sale of beer in the stadium and that is horrific for a school that condones thuggery and is so mean spirited.

i beg to differ.  I wanna see just how good Boise is when Kellen Moore isnt the QB.  They are not playing good teams everyweek. That Georgia game could have gone either way.
