As first reported by's Brett McMurphy on Friday morning, the Big 12 has invited West Virginia to join the conference and West Virginia accepted the invitation, informing the Big East of the decision on Friday.

The move is now official as the Big 12 has released a statement about West Virginia.

"The Big 12 Presidents and Chancellors are excited to welcome another outstanding institution to the Conference," said Burns Hargis, Chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors in the release. "The addition of West Virginia, while expanding the reach of the Big 12, brings an impressive institution with esteemed academics and a proud athletic tradition into the Conference. This is another step in building a strong foundation for the future of the Big 12."

"The Big 12 is a perfect fit for West Virginia University," said WVU President Dr. James P. Clements. "It is a strong conference that, like WVU, values quality academic and athletic programs, and has a great tradition of success. This is a very exciting time for WVU and Mountaineer nation. I am confident that the future of WVU athletics has never been more promising."

West Virginia to the Big 12
What is not so clear at this point is when West Virginia will be joining the Big 12, According to the Big 12's release on Friday, the school would become a member of the conference beginning on July 1, 2012. However, the Big East said on Friday that it plans on holding West Virginia to the same 27-month notice that it is holding Pitt and Syracuse to. If that is the case, then West Virginia can't join the Big 12 until 2014.

During a conference call on Friday afternoon announcing the deal, West Virginia said that it plans on being in the Big 12 by July 2012, but it's not official as of yet. From Chip Patterson's post:
Both [athletic director Oliver] Luck and [President James] Clements repeatedly used the target date "July 1, 2012" as the school's expected arrival in the Big 12. When multiple questions were posed to West Virginia's leadership on how they planned to leave before the completion 27-month period - the response was predictably vague.

"Our team and their team were in discussion today, tying to make that happen," Luck said of the negotiations with the Big East office.
How West Virginia would go about that, the odds are that the answer is money. The Big East may be willing to let the Mountaineers leave early if the school pays far more than the $5 million exit fee. What exactly the amount would be for that, well, as Luck said above, those discussions are currently being held.

Of course, this does not answer every question about this announced move. Generally over the last few weeks when West Virginia was a rumored target of the Big 12, it was always with the caveat that the conference wouldn't bring in another school unless Missouri left the conference first. Well, as of the news that West Virginia had accepted an invitation on Friday, Missouri had yet to announce that it was leaving for the SEC.

Though it's possible that Missouri's announcement could be coming in the next couple of days.

Big 12 makes West Virginia official

@redbird1013 - We (WVU) might "steal" your license plate but we won't make them into a "still."  I am sad you feel that way beause I know I want Louisville to join the Big XII as well because the fans are so classy and have great spelling too.

Keep your head up high and keep going forward because the realignment is not over yet.  Louisville, BYU, or Boise will get some sort of invite eventually.

I hope really don't fear getting licked by a Mountaineer fan!

Hey Goldenpanther4, you are gonna have one less sellout at Heinz Field every year.  You want warts?  You're gonna need 'em in the seats. You are gonna wish the Mountaineers were still going to Heinz field so you could enjoy a sellout once a year.  The announced attendance Wednesday of 40,000+ was the biggest hoax over the past century.  Like Ron Cook said, "The WPIAL Playoffs (thats high school for those of you who don't like in PA) draw bigger crowds."  Wonder how many are gonna show up when Duke visits Heinz Field?  Sure, the basketball will be fun having Duke and UNC coming to The Pete....but for football, the real money maker, your conference sucks and so do your fans.

Big 12 makes West Virginia official

I agree with rhensley that I think we are in for another round of conference expansion.  The big prize out there is Notre Dame (which pains me to say).

I would not be shocked if Notre Dame by the end of the year went to a full conference membership.  They could stay with the Big East but I think they will jump ship.  They should go to the Big Ten but that even playing field with regards to money might prevent that.

The ACC would work but in the end, I could see them going with the Big XII.

You are an azzhat, nobody has ever thrown batteries at a cards fan, in fact, we were very supportive in getting you in the Big East. I have entertained UL fans at my WVU Tailgate and attended games at Papa Johns, you, on the otherhand, have probably never ever been to a college game outside of Papa Johns in your life, with maybe exception of UC or Memphis. You are acting like a huge crybaby.....grow up

Big 12 makes West Virginia official

Well, I wish WVU the best in the Big 12 or whatever.  Still think the ACC should have taken WV, warts and all, but, twas not to be. However, all is not lost for the ACC because ND still could be on the menu.  If it is ND, then I hope they take UConn in the quest for 16. Whatever, they do, I trust that Rutgers is not the equation.

Big 12 makes West Virginia official

For all you Big 12 fans that think adding WV is great, you need to ask the schools that have been in a conference with them.  Any of them.  I can tell you this, and this is the turth.  WV is a good school with some really good people and is beautiful country.  With that being said, I have been all over this country and to many schools and sporting events.  I have never in my entire life ever seen fans like WV fans.  They are rude, inconsiderate, and just plain out right nasty.  They throw batteries at you and your team, they throw ice, cups of coke, and even snakes at the other teams fans.  And the best of all, when you travel to Morgantown WV they still your license plates off of your cars. This is all true every word, I have no reason to lie to you about this.  So good luck to all you Big 12 fans who are in for a rude awakening about WV.  I for one have no problem with them moving, I would it rather have been Louisville moving but either way we are rid of them.  The Big East will be fine, but more than that it will be a much classier league without them.  Go Cards!!!

Big 12 makes West Virginia official

As a WVU grad and a Big East supporter I am both happy and sad. I am sad the Big East has crumbled due to the greed of others.  It just plain stinks how conferences pilfer another to chase the almighty dollar.  So much for rivalries, so much for geographies. So to the Big 10, ACC, Pac 12, and SEC 13, this is all on you guys.  In the end WVU had no choice but to leave the Big East for fear of being rendered irrelevant in the grand scheme of the college football money grab excess.  So in my lifetime I have witnessed the demise of the great WVU series with Penn State, Boston College, Virginia Tech and now add Syracuse and Pitt to the list.  Gone are the basketball rivalries in the Big East.

So thank you to the Big XII for inviting us.  I look forward to the rivalries and I promise we are not nearly so nasty a fan base as exaggerated by the posters who have never been to Morgantown.  I look forward to visiting places I have never been before and getting to know more friends across this country.

Now if only some good can come from all this.  If this leads us to a playoff then I for one would say it may have been worth it.  If not, I think it is a waste.

This little lady is both happy and sad today.  I think I need to get a margarita spun up in the blender.  Any takers?

Big 12 makes West Virginia official

I think the Big 12 is making a huge mistake by staying at 10 teams, and not having a Conference Championship game.  Just go back to 2003, when USC was the #1 team in the nation in both polls, but did not get selected to play in the BCS Championship game because they did not play in a Conference Championship game, and LSU and OU did.  A 13 win team has the edge over a 12 win team, even if both teams have the same number of losses.  The Big 12 has an excellent opportunity to pick up Louisville and Cincinnati now.  Both are decent in football.  Louisville is a basketball power.  By doing this, the Big 12 could also go back to an 8 game conference schedule, giving their teams an easier time qualifying for a bowl game.  A 12 team Big 12 just makes sense.

nice thought...but who said the big 12 is done? sure, the rumor is that they are staying at 10 teams, but we all know how rumors go. if you remember, the so-called "greatest college football team ever", oklahoma...lost the championship game to k-state...taking them out of the championship picture altogether. #1 ranked kansas state lost to a&m in another, and ended up in a much smaller bowl as well. any team in the big 12 who survives the 9 game conference season undefeated, will play in the title game.

Big 12 makes West Virginia official

Geographically, this will be tough for WVU, but I think in the long run it is good for everyone. BIG 12 will make a run for best conference in the country against the SEC if they haven't done so already. Morgantown hosting Texas and Oklahoma will be completely insane can't wait!
