The Big 12 may not be done expanding

The wheel of conference realignment never stops spinning, it only hits bumps in the road and crushes conferences beneath it occasionally.

When the Big 12 announed last week that West Virginia would be joining the conference as Missouri's replacement -- should Missouri leave, which is expected but just hasn't happened yet -- interim commissioner Chuck Neinas said that the conference was done expanding for now. He also said that the Big 12 was fine with 10 schools.

Well for now may not have lasted very long. According to Berry Tramel in The Oklahoman, the team that lost out to West Virginia to become the newest member of the Big 12 may still be in the running. Tramel says that the Big 12 may invite Louisville to join the conference soon and expand the league to 11 teams, much like the Big 10 did for years before adding Nebraska this season.

Tramel also says that the Big 12 might consider playing a 10-game round robin conference schedule if it expands to 11 schools in hopes of increasing television money by having more premiere games.

Of course, I'm of the opinion that if Louisville did eventually work its way to the Big 12, the conference wouldn't stop at 11, and would look to add another school. Much like the Big 12 would consider a 10-game conference schedule to increase revenue, it'd probably start thinking about the revenue it could get by rekindling the Big 12 title game as well.

Who that next team would be, I'm not sure. BYU could still come into play, even though the Big 12 seemed to pass on the Cougars already. In his report Tramel mentioned both Notre Dame and Cincinnati as possibilities, but I see no circumstance in which Notre Dame joins the Big 12 in football. Cincinnati might work because its current conference is in the process of falling apart, and it would provide the Big 12 with a nice market in Ohio, which could have some recruiting benefits as well.

The Big 12 may not be done expanding

I might be crazy, but Notre Dame and Missouri are both a perfect fit to joing the Big Ten, school wise and geograhic wise. Maybe this is why Missouri has not made a move yet? This is just total speculation on my behalf.

The Big 12 may not be done expanding

What a horrible piece of journalism.  This article is nothing more than pure speculation and conjecture based on a comment (mind you not even a real decision) of a "source" inside the Big XII.  Good grief!  It's done, except that WVU needs to negotiate their exit from the BE.  Louisville isn't going anywhere.
Sigman hits the nail on the head with his post above is just an excerpt.  If you are truly interested in the situation it is a must read look for it on the 2nd page of comments and you will learn 10 times the amount of critical information on this topic than the actual article.

Great job Sigman for a good post and beating me to the punch we are in 100% agreement.  I would add that if the Big 12 wants to go to 12 BYU maybe an opportunity to do so because they have their own network deal that could POSSIBLY folded in and creat more revenue in order to hit 12 but at best that is just specualtion on my part (I still think it is more viable idea than anything in the article).

To Louisville I hope we are wrong because you are a great school and a great city and you deserve better than your current situation and being mislead by hack reporting.

The Big 12 may not be done expanding

I'd like to see Louisville and Rutgers in the B12. It could build into east/west type divisions as constant alignment progresses over the coming years. Maybe then Pitt would want to join a better football conference. That's not why they joined the ACC.

The Big 12 may not be done expanding

Why WVU fans hating on Louisville? I'd like to see both teams in Big 12. Too bad WVU has to travel so far to it's games. The non-revenue sports are going to be spending a huge amount of their budgets on travel. Not to mention the student athletes are going to be away from classes more b/c of travel time. The ACC or SEC would've been a better fit for WVU, but I guess we know what happened with that....Money mouth

The Big 12 may not be done expanding

The whole BCS system is so freakin' terrible for college sports. Let everyone from the smallest schools to the biggest share in the money.

The Big 12 may not be done expanding

I am not sure if cards want to join Big XII, now. Since other wave is coming shortly and sure to swallow the lest of the schools and conferences. I strongly doubt if Big XII can survive this Tsunami of the alignment. If Pac 12 decides to expands, 4 will abandon the sinking ship immediately. And these 4 are captain, chief of boat, and sons of these two, in other words, they follow them any where.

Now, it has been said, who in the right mind really think Big XII is more stable than three legged table? Big XII is the dysfunctional family owned hoe house inTexas. How much you southern girls dressed up really does not matter, one who get richer is the pimp driving the white caddie with big long hone in the front of it. You girls never get anything to bring back to your mama. So, forget about little hoe house inTexas. Just wait for the call from Southern (un)Educated Cousin, they are three, soon to be two girls short…

The Big 12 may not be done expanding

Why would they want Loserville?? I have been up there 3 times for the WVU/Louisville football game and Porta Jon Stadium is a freakin joke. The stadium is always half full and no tailgating whatsoever. They are the biggest bandwagon fans I've ever seen.  Take someone else who supports their team, not these clowns.

The Big 12 may not be done expanding

I am a WVU fan and am not sure why other fans seem to want to bash Louisville.  This is not a competition at this point and adding Lousiville to the Big 12 would be a great add for WVU as in my opinion one of the saddest parts of the whole conference realignment issue is the loss of rivalries.  No we don't have a long storied rivalry with Louisville, but it has been growing over recent years - who can forget the multiple overtime game!  Not to mention adding a team in a closer proximity to WVU.  Open your eyes, this would be nothing but good for WVU.  I'm all for it, bring on the Cards!
