Dominique Whaley will get a scholarship

While watching Oklahoma this season I've repeated a phrase in my head and on Twitter whenever I saw Dominique Whaley break a nice run for the Sooners offense: give that kid a scholarship! Whaley, the Sooners leading rusher this season, is a walk-on and has been paying his own way at the school.

Then, sadly, Whaley broke his ankle on the first play of the game against Kansas State on Saturday ending his season. One of my first thoughts then was how unfortunate it was that the kid was playing so well, and now this injury was not only going to cost him the season, but possibly a scholarship as well.

Well, put those fears to rest as Bob Stoops informed Whaley on Saturday after the game that he didn't have to worry, come December he will have his scholarship. Stoops let the media know after practice on Monday.

It's a pretty classy move by Stoops and the Oklahoma football program, and I commend them for it.

Whaley had surgery on his ankle on Sunday and should be back to full health in time for next season.

To Teres Minor,
Add to that, Bob Stoops wife and kids like living in Norman, Oklahoma.  It's a neat place to grow-up.  I only lived in Norman my first year at OU but I would have been happy to grow old there.

Thanks for the story, Tom.  It was a class move by Bob Stoops.  I'll be honest!  I want OU to win but if they are not going to teach these young people 'good character' I don't care if they play football at all.  Bob Stoops seems to be one of the best at both.  That would also be the style of OU President David Boren.  It makes me proud to be a Sooner.

I am not an OU fan, but I am happy to see this and Bob Stoops is classy and proved it here once again.

Classy move...

Classy moves like this one are one of the reasons Bob Stoops is mentioned whenever a high-profile job comes up.  It's also one of the reasons I think he will stay at Oklahoma.  Stoops seems to be one of those coaches who is motivated more by intangibles such as loyalty and fairness than money or the next "shiny object" in another town.

Now, all Stoops has to do is figure out how to avoid the one "inexplicable loss" Oklahoma seems to sustain every season.  At any rate, Stoops does it right, and OU will probably have a few more opportunities to get into the BS-Shampionship game while he is there.  If there is a playoff involving conference champions in a few years, OU will be looking even better.

Congrats to Bob Stoops and Dominique Whaley.

and deservedly so... Whaley has been the backbone of the offense this year and has taken the heat off of Landry Jones, who has been sacked the fewest times of any QB in major college football this year.

I call it Stoops being Stoops: taking care of his players, recognizing the things they have done for his program, and dealing out swift justice - good or bad.

Unfortunately, winning the Big XII just got even tougher for OU without Whaley in the backfield.
