Buckeyes Hail Mary was improvised

Ohio State was kind enough to hand Wisconsin its second straight loss via Hail Mary last weekend, and Braxton Miller's pass to Devin Smith may have saved the Ohio State season as well. The win kept the Buckeyes alive in the Big Ten's Leaders Division and a Rose Bowl berth is still in the cards.

Which is pretty amazing considering the way the Ohio State season started, but there's something else even more surprising about that Hail Mary. According to wide receiver Corey Brown, the players never got the play call from the sidelines. They just winged it.

“We were scrambling … and [the coaches] didn’t give us a play or nothing,” Brown told The Columbus Dispatch. “So we’re out there just running playground routes. I think I ran a deep out or something like that. And Braxton said he pointed at me to get the safety to run over (so he could) throw it to Devin. So on his part, that was like a veteran move.”

Brown clarified his statement after, saying that the coaches called a play, but only one of the players actually got it.

“I just think we were so, like, into the moment our emotions kind of took over and we weren’t really listening to anybody. We were just trying to hustle. I think there was only one wideout, which was Devin, who got the real play.”

So the one person who actually got the playcall, Devin Smith, was the one who caught the touchdown. There's a lesson in here somewhere, and I think it's that Luke Fickell and the Ohio State coaches should tell everybody but Braxton Miller what the play is before every snap.

Hail mary is a bit of a stretch..this was a long pass, a hail mary is just drop back and throw as far as you can. This was an actual play whether they all knew the play or not, but it wasnt a hail mary. The fact your qb uses his legs to draw in the defense and open up the wideouts is maturity shown by a freshman at a time when the pressure was at a max. Braxton became the leader in that game and will only get better, things are looking up for the Buckeyes after a shaky start.

A TD is a TD, troll-boy.  So what if it had a bit of hang-time?  When your WR is that wide open, all ya gotta do is get it there.

Buckeyes Hail Mary was improvised

Very true.  This was not a hail mary.  Journalists just try to make everything sound more dramatic, and they think it sounds better to say Wisconsin got beat by a hail mary in back to back weeks.  When really, against ohio state that was just a very long pass.

it was a perfectly designed play with one hell of a throw from Braxton. Perfect spiral, right to the mid endzone and into the hands of a wide open Devin Smith, Basically Braxton pulled wisconsin out of line with his legs and his eyes. If he sharpens the rest of his game he will be scary good. As for wisconsin i think we're all a bit naive to think they're down for the count. They are a great team with leadership and they'll get back up.

Why does the media continue to refer to this play as a Hail Mary?  Do they even know what a Hail Mary is?  A Hail Mary is not simply a long pass, but a throw it up and hope kind of thing.  This play was not that.  It was an excellent pass that went right to the intended open receiver.  Miller deserves much more credit than to say it was a Hail Mary.
