Notre Dame's shamrock helmets are 'special'

Notre Dame faces Maryland this weekend in what they're calling the "Shamrock Series Game," and it appears the Irish don't want the Terps to be the only team on the field with a, shall we say, "creative" helmet. Behold, via the Notre Dame Equipment twitter feed, the Irish helmets for this weekend:

That? That doesn't look like a football helmet. It looks like a St. Patrick's Day crafts project -- and not a particularly good or tasteful one.

What I don't understand about the Notre Dame alternate helmets so frequently using the shamrock is this: Notre Dame has its own set of iconography for its football team, and it's just about the most recognizable in the nation. There's the interlocking "ND" logo, the "boxing leprechaun" logo, and to a lesser extent Touchdown Jesus*. But anyway, missing from all of those highly recognizable images is the shamrock. It's just not part of the look, and hasn't been since the Irish scrapped a three-year project with the helmet shamrock back in 1962.

So when the Irish players slap a shamrock on their hats for the "sort of throwback but not really" game against Michigan this year, then do it again for the upcoming Maryland contest, it feels like an aggressive rebranding initiative by a program and school that have, in all other aspects, staked their reputation on sticking to tradition at all costs. It just doesn't make sense.

*Also, one might wryly add, the NBC peacock. But we're not here to judge Notre Dame for having their own network; all college football programs should aspire to be so high-profile one day.

I'll second that holy crap and say that's hidious!

Sad that teams need gimmicks to try and play better or get recruits to look their way. I always thought nd was above that....sigh.

I am so happy that Pat Haden has openly stated that USC will never change their uniforms. I liken it to being secure in your own skin and being a leader, not a follower.

Notre Dame's shamrock helmets are 'special'

How can everyone being crying "tradition tradition tradition" when teams are switching conferences like nothing, major schools have been embarrassed to the point that they will ALWAYS be mentioned with scandal, and the face of college football has never been more different than what it was in the past. Not to mention, ND has been a shell of itself the last few years. Tradition is a great feel-good story that people latch onto because they had winning and positive memories in the past. But for a one-off game against Maryland when neither team is exactly stellar, who cares about tradition. Do something fun and different to make it interesting.

Love it.

As a side note: It always cracks me up how CBS publishes so many anti-ND articles. Although on the flip side, NBC (The ND Broadcast Channel) puts out some pro-ND propaganda. ESPN/ABC (Disney) does a decent job of staying unbiased in regards to ND reporting ... let's see how they promote Texas next year!

As a diehard Maryland fan I take offense to the negative comments about the quality of this year's Terps team.  I just wish I could dispute some of the claims!  The truth really hurts!  On the ND helmets, ewwwwwwww!  I've always thought of ND as one of the classy programs in the country and the new helmet goes against that in every way.  It looks like something you'd see in cartoon.  Tradition is what has made ND stand above the pack for many years.  Don't ruin that now!

I thought they would save this stunt for only the really special games. But MARYLAND??!! A game against Maryland is not special to nobody. This seems to be a battle to see who can wear the ugliest helmet. Maryland will win that, but ND is not far behind.

Nice idea, WAAYYYYY too big of a shamrock.  I give away my money making idea here but what they need to do as a new "tradition" is to have small/tiny shamrock stickers and give to players for outstanding games/plays/contributions etc similar to the Ohio St buckeye stickers that gradually cover their helmets.  The little shamrocks would be pretty cool looking.

Maryland Game is Special?

If they're special, wear them in the Stanford game or bowl game. This year's MD is just pathetic. Nothing special necessary.
