This will come as a shock to many of you, but it seems that there are still some things not every school in the Big 12 can agree on. While the Big 12's interim commissioner Chuck Neinas has said that the conference will remain at 10 schools after adding TCU and West Virginia to replace Texas A&M and Missouri, some members of the conference would still prefer expanding to 12, with Louisville being a top candidate.

The Oklahoman's Berry Tramel spoke with a source who was present when Neinas met with Oklahoma regents last weekend and the source said that Neinas is the driving force behind remaining at 10 schools. Neinas seems to believe the conference is better off without a championship game and playing a round-robin nine-game conference schedule.

Another source in Tramel's column is also very much in favor of the conference expanding and sees Louisville as a key addition.

“We have to explore what type of growth would have to be better for our conference,” the source told Tramel. “There’s no data that a conference of 16 is better than a conference of 12. In our case, the number is not the issue so much as the quality. But to make it better for West Virginia, we have to add Louisville. For our conference stability, adding Louisville is good for us because it would be good for West Virginia. The more we can get people to start talking about the greater good, the more stable this conference can become.”

Tramel also spoke to Oklahoma athletic direcotor Joe Castiglione who also believes that the Big 12 should look to add more schools.

“I think what Chuck might be doing is settling everything down, not letting speculation develop,” Castiglione said. “He may very well believe that staying at 10 is the best thing, and I respect that. But I don’t believe we should stay at 10, not with other moving parts.”

In other words, the more things change in the Big 12 -- new schools, new commissioner -- the more they stay the same.

Expansion still on minds of some in the Big 12

Idl - I'm not going to hi jack this thread with a WVU / Louisville wrestling match - although it has been fun - and it
does show the others how our rivalry has been - and would continue to play out should we end up in the B12

Best to you brother.

Losersooner    Yes you did beat WVU. 1 time in the last 5 years. and 3 times out of 13 games, that's realy strong isn't it. Not!!!
And yes in the last 3 to 4 years WVU has done just as good as Loserville. WVU has done better in the NCAA Tour. and the Big East Tour. than loserville has in the last 3 to 4 Years. And as a combine Football and B-Ball School Loserville is not even close. How many times has Loserville went out early in the NCAA and the Big East Tournament in the last few years.

Chimera     WVU will be playing in the Big 12 in 2012. WVU is a state univ. a Rhode Island court will not have the power for a injuction to stop WVU from going anywhere. They can find WVU is lilable for damages to the Big East and WVU may have to pay more than the exit fee, but i don't see how it would be more than the amount of the exit fee. These law suits could go on for sometime. And in the mean time WVU will be able to get a injuction in the West Virginia court to be able to leave.

Expansion still on minds of some in the Big 12

For God sake why can't the Big 12 do the obvious and go back to 12 with Cincinnati & Louisville?
Back to 12 by 2012!

beyond 12 we should also consider
BYU
Notre Dame
Tulane (AAU & New Orleans)
Rice (AAU & Houston)

Neinas and the big 12 must stay at 10 right now, or they may sacrafice the leverage they have with Missouri.  Due to television contracts which are contingent on a ten team Big 12, Missouri cannot leave until the Big 12 has secured a replacement.  WVU's future is uncertain and will probably lose their case in Rhode Island courts and will be required to stay for what is left of the 27month notice period.

If the Big 12 were to addd say BYU, they would lose the ability to hold Missouri for the time being.  Another Big East team would still have the 27 month issue, but only Louisville is a real consideration.  After that they will try again with BYU before discussions with Cincinnati.

We need to add Louisville and Cincy now. Arkansas, Kentucky and ND DO NOT WANT IN OUR CONFERENCE! Add Louisville and Cincy while they still do. Adding BYU and being stretched from WV to BYU makes zero sense. Adding boise because they've been good at football lately is very short sighted. The rest of their school is a juco. And as soon as Peterson leaves their football will go back down and they bring no market. Louisville and Cincy bridge WV to the rest of the Big 12.

Louisville loser. At least WVU is in the Big 12 and Losersville is on the outside looking in. And Yes WVU does bring a storng B-Ball school to the Big 12 as does Louisville. And as for Rankings in the last 10 Years WVU is one of the schools that is rank in the top 20 for Football and B-Ball combine. Loserville is not. But with that said, of all the teams that the Big 12 could add, i would like to see them add Louisville.

Expansion still on minds of some in the Big 12

Quality over quantity and that is evident in the schools they have kept and invited.

You can't be serious ! ! !   You haven't played one freakin game in the Big 12 yet & somehow YOU are among the conference heavyweights ? ? ?

Go lay down chump & get a grip on yourself.
