Virginia denies Penn State contact with London

UPDATE: Official word from the Virginia athletic department is that any stories regarding Mike London's direct or indirect contact with Penn State about a coaching position are "simply not true."  The Cavaliers, trailing only Virginia Tech in the Coastal Division standings, face Duke at home on Saturday.

After nearly half of a century, the Penn State head football coaching position is open. While interim head coach Tom Bradley prepares the current roster for a run at the Big Ten title, the school has already begun looking toward the future. According to a local report, Penn State has already begun targeting potential candidates. One of the first of which being Virginia head coach Mike London.

CBSSports.com's Jim Rodenbush reports that Penn State contacted London before Paterno was officially dismissed by the Board of Trustees. According to the Washington Post, London told Trustees Charman Steve Garban that he was not interested in the job.

While London has no specific ties to the Nittany Lions, he did spend three seasons on the Virginia coaching staff under then-defensive coordinator Al Golden. Golden, former tight end and team captain at Penn State, has been immediately suggested as a candidate for the job, though the Miami head coach insists that he and his family are happy in Coral Gables. London eventually followed Golden as defensive coordinator for two seasons before spending two seasons as the head coach at Richmond.

In only his second year at Virginia, London already has the Cavaliers bowl eligible and in contention for an ACC Coastal Division title. With a focus on in-state recruiting and rebuilding pride in the program, London's strides in Charlottesville deserve the attention he has been receiving. His "no thanks" to Penn State likely has as much (if not more) to do with the success at Virginia than the issues in State College.

nonbias - London may not have the star power as you suggest, but if you read about him he is a bad***. Used to work homicides back when Richmond, Va. was one of the murder capitals of the country. I think he was shot once.

Here comes Mike Leach.......

Well said, at least if Leach were there back then though he would have locked that monster in a dark basement boiler room with the other pansies where he belongs rather than turned the other cheek

It will be tough to get anyone to take that job without seeing what the fallout will be first and you almost think they need someone with ties to the program but certainly not anyone who coached there from 1988 until now regardless of it they knew anything or not.  A fresh face though, that is certainly needed and someone who is no nonsense like Gruden or someone like that.  If PSU is to even have a shot at coming through this they need a bad-a**, a leader, someone with name recognition and someone who is credible and everyone knows won't stand for any BS.  While London has done a good job at UVA he doesn't have the name or star power to steer them though the sh** storm that is going on in spite of his background.  Honestly, I don't really know who is right for the job and if anyone would even want it.

Really philsfan1? Are you an absolute douche? In about 2 years, Penn State will wish it was Indiana in football. This might be the last winning season Penn State has until 2020. No self respecting recruit will step foot on your campus becasue of this.

, you are obviously in severe pain and shock, but that certainly is no reason to cast insults at other universities. UVA is ranked #25 in US News and World reports annual "Best Universities in the U.S." rankings, while Penn State is ranked #45. Now, I'm only from Virginia, and therefore may have problems with subtraction, but it looks to me like UVA just might have a few smart people there, and I would imagine they have their teeth. As a matter of fact, since I actually LIVE in the Charlottesville area, I can attest to both of those assumptions as being FACTUAL.

It appears that CBSsports.com's Jim Rodenbush is a moron, and should be fired for misreporting information.

This is why they were looking at London:

" He was a and in with the city's unit before pursuing a coaching career."

From his wikipedia bio. They wanted a cop and a coach.

Report: Mike London says no thanks to Penn State

Charlottesville is certainly no suburb of Washington DC.  It is also is not and has never been a "hillbilly" town.    The natives are gracious and southern, but there are quite a few transplants in the city and there is the wine, cheese and horse crowd.  It is a beautiful historical town situated in the Blue Ridge Mountains.   Now if you are talking about Blacksburg......lol. Just joking Hokie fans.

How stupid is the person that wrote people in Charlottesville have about 12 teeth.  Charlottesville is actually a nice town and the University of Virginia is well respected academically!

I've been to Charlottesville, where the average person there has about 12 teeth and an IQ of 80.

Actually I'm sure you haven't been there......or maybe you only saw your family on the visit, because clearly you have no idea what you're talking about.
