Report: Judge had ties to Sandusky's charity

The Jerry Sandusky scandal in State College took an interesting turn over the weekend, when it was pointed out that the judge who released the former Penn State defensive coordinator on bail had ties to The Second Mile - the charity founded by Sandusky.

Sandusky was charged with 40 counts of sexually abusing children, targeting many of his victims through the organization set up for troubled youths. Prosecutors in the case requested $500,000 bail for Sandusky, but Judge Leslie Dutchcot allowed him to be freed on $100,000 unsecured bail.

Judge Dutchcot's biography on the website of the law firm Goodall & Yurchak previously listed her as a volunteer for The Second Mile. Since news of the ties between the district judge and Sandusky spread, it appears the law firm has opted to pull down all of their attorney and staff profiles from the website.

Dutchcot's ties to Sandusky probably should have been addressed publicly before presiding on the case. If is possible her volunteering could have had no direct contact to the alleged sex offender at all. However, dropping the bail to 20% of the prosecution's request and then pulling the biography from the law firm's website do not help Dutchcot's argument for being the right person to preside over this matter.

Report: Judge had ties to Sandusky's charity

This is a huge problem in state college and in centre county.  Everyone knows everyone.  Especially in what I will call the upper 'power class'.  There has been no turnover in leadership in this town- so their replacements are basically their friends, children, etc.  The culture must change and outsiders must be brought in to clean up the fraud.  Or next we are going to hear that the Sandusky jury will be made up of 9 'random' local residents: Spanier, Curley, Shultz, Dotti Sandusky, McCleary, Joepa, Sue Pa, Jay Pa, and two local postal workers.   Dont be suprised when they return a not guilty verdict after a 3 second deliberation.   &nbs

Judge Dutchcot should have done the proper thing and recused herself from this case.  She was probably trying to help Sandusky, but it appears that she wound up with "egg on her face" instead.  A sad, unfortunate situation just got even worse.

Rod Smart... I read over that and you are spot on... That is ridiculous...

This is getting worse and worse by the day...

I have been saying this all along- Penn State, you need to get rid of every admin member and football coach and make sure you start anew.....

Seriously.. Penn State needs to break ties with every person who has ties to the program.    &nb

I have a feeling that we are just scratching the surface of how deep this goes.  So far we have much of the Penn State coaching staff, University officials, the local police and now a judge.

I have had a long time belief that the Paterno regime was wielding way to much power and influence in the town and that their was always a lot of shady stuff that was well hidden.

This is going to get worse before it gets better.  I have a feeling that as more digging is done, there will be so many things discovered that a lot of lives will be ruined.  People have probably been burying dirt for so long in the "interest of protecting the school, its students and leaders".

There needs to be a Federal task force assigned to handle any ongoing investigation, it is the only way to make sure that nothing is left under the rug.

What a disaster, but it was bound to happen.........this many bad deeds cannot go by without someone being held accountable.  I just wonder who the biggest scape goat will be.

Report: Judge had ties to Sandusky's charity

There must have been (and may still be) a lot of lead in the drinking water in Happy Valley because everyone involved is acting as if they had/have brain damage.  If you tried - or even if someone like Robert Ludlum tried - you could not come up with a more rediculous series of actions and inactions related to the horrific crimes committed by Sandusky.

As has been posted, someone needs to figure out how to get this entire process transitioned to Federal jurisdiction, whether by the Clery Act or some other means.  I don't see how anyone would have the least bit of confidence in the local community and authorities not to somehow screw this up in the legal proceedings - from what we have seen, they might even do that intentionally  - AGAIN!!

Does anyone in Happy Valley or it's surroundings have any moral or ethical behavior??? This is yet another reason why this matter should be referred to an outside law enforcement agency. The judge clearly has a personal involvement with the Second Mile organization and should not be presiding over any litigation regarding this case. By not making this information public herself, the judges motives, moral and ethical behavior is now in question. Funny how Sandusky is free to roam the valley by securing 100,000 bail and the other 2 penn state officials had to post 75,000 bail. I smell "cover up and  inside workings" all over this case. I truely believe and common sense tells me that there are many others involved in this scandal that has brought nothing but despair, distrust and shame to a once proud University. Each day this whole ordeal is becoming more and more tragic, disgusting to say the least and appalled at the actions of all involved here. Obama, it's your time to do something here, this is ridiculous!!!

Even if all is above-board, judges need to avoid "the appearance of impropriety."  This volunteer work should have been disclosed up front by the bail-setting judge.

This is no cover up, Joe Pa aided a rapist and only after it comes out is he remorseful....the man got exactly what he deserved and hopefully Sadusky will too. The support this old goat is getting is starting to get out of hand...I can only hope the NCAA does the right thing and gives the program the death penalty!!!

Now Rod, he is a fine member of the community and promised to stop raping little boys.
