Report: Meyer tells Arizona he's not interested

Credit Arizona athletic director Greg Byrne for aiming high in his search to replace the fired Mike Stoops. But one of his first swings has reportedly been a miss.

According to a Tuesday report from the New York Times, Byrne and Urban Meyer met in Miami "early last week" to gauge Meyer's potential interest in the Wildcats' head coaching position. The meeting ended with Meyer reportedly "intrigued" by the potential offer.

Apparently that interest didn't last long; Meyer then telephoned Byrne Monday to tell him he "was not going to pursue the job," the Times reported.

The report will only pour fuel on the speculative fire that Meyer is holding out for one of the two high-profile Big Ten jobs assumed to be open at the end of the season, with neither Luke Fickell at Ohio State nor Tom Bradley at under-siege Penn State expected (by most) to return at their respective teams' helms in 2012. Meyer, of course, has spent most of his coaching career in the Midwest and served two years as an assistant at Ohio State itself.

With Meyer out of the picture, Byrne will likely look to one of the other names mentioned as possible Wildcat candidates: the omnipresent Mike Leach, CBS Sports analyst Rich Rodriguez, former Oregon coach Mike Belotti, or current Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen, whom Byrne hired while serving as AD in Starkville.

Sure didn't keep you from taking one of Meyer's criminal cast-offs, Scam Newton, did it? Auburn fans getting on some other program about criminals or cheating is the pot calling the kettle black if I've ever heard it.

He's not gonna come back and coach against Utah and Kyle Whittingham.

He knows he will get beat!

Report: Meyer tells Arizona he's not interested

Good grief where do you start with these post:

1.  I am sure Meyer would be successful in the NFL a spread option attack is just what the doctored order.
2.  Mullen would actually be a better choice for Arizona since Florida has been going down hill since he left.
3.  Did Meyer get healthy again already?  Has he spent enough time with his family?  Oh I will just say it Meyer doesn't exactly tell the truth all the time (but shhhhh).
4.  If you can recruit a Tebow like athlete and increase the size of your university's police jail then Meyer is your guy otherwise I might pass.

I think that about covers the below,

You are probably right on all except money.

I just looked it up and was shocked. Mullen will make 2.5mm this year. He apparently got a big raise after they finished 15th in country last year.

According to the list I saw that puts him in the top 25 highest paid coaches.

As a comparison Stoops made a little under 1.5 mm.

I didn't realize Mullen would be looking for a demotion.

Absolutely a stunning development.  I would have never guessed he would have turned down an offer from Arizona.  Why wouldn't he want to come here to Tucson?  On the other hand, I think he may be concerned about having to play against his former employer Utah. BTW, that photo above is a great picture of him.  It catches him in his perfect state.  Smug. Full of himself.  He is probably winking at the almighty above.

I wonder if Urb is looking at a bigger offer, possibly coaching the Indy Colts.  There is no way Jim Caldwell lasts the season unless the Colts can win their final six games.   Even without Peyton Manning, I can't see how any coach survives the type of season the Colts have enjoyed so far.

The NFL can offer Urb more money than any university athletic department can.  Look at how much scratch Pete Carroll is drawing from the Seahawks.   Also as a haed coach of a National Football League franchise, Urb doesn't have to be concerned with things like grades, tutors, the crime blotter, fights and other things that can be overlooked by winning football games.  The best part of Urb coaching the Colts is that Urb can be united with that other pillar of honesty, Jim Tressell.

i would think Dan Mullen would walk to Arizona to get out of the SEC west. Better money, better chance to win, less pressure.
