Freshman Washington quarterback Nick Montana, son of legendary quarterback Joe Montana, is set to take the next step in his career on Saturday as he has been named Washington's starter as the Huskies face Oregon State.

"Nick Montana will make his first career start this Saturday," said head coach Steve Sarkisian in an online announcement Thursday afternoon. "So proud, he has earned this opportunity. Need to get Keith Price fully healthy, he has had a great season."

Sarkisian's assessment of Price is hardly an exaggeration; the talented sophomore ranks 16th nationally in passer efficiency on the season, even as he's been hobbled with leg injuries over the course of the year. Montana, meanwhile, saw the first significant action of his career last week as he went 9-15 for 73 yards and a score in the second half of the Huskies' 40-17 loss to USC. Montana's score was a 20-yard pass to Kasen Williams with 13 seconds left in the game.

Price was manhandled by Trojan defenders in that game, being sacked four times (once for a safety) and taking more contact after some throws, and he left the game early in the third quarter with a left knee injury. Price had been practicing with the team as late as Wednesday, but Sarkisian's message indicates that his star quarterback's going to need time to heal.

Washington is 6-4 (4-3) on the season, and is looking to shore up third place in the Pac-12 North behind Oregon and Stanford. After this week's game against OSU, Washington finishes the year at home against Washington State in the annual Apple Cup game. No determination has been made regarding Price's status for the finale as yet.
