PHOTOS: Iowa-Nebraska "Heroes Game" Trophy

Give credit to Iowa and Nebraska for this: the concept of naming their new annual rivalry game the "Heroes Game" and using it as a platform for celebrating "local heroes" is an original, engaging, endearingly Midwestern concept.

So it's a minor shame the trophy unveiled this week to be awarded to the winner -- and upon which the names of said heroes will be engraved -- doesn't quite live up to the uniqueness of the concept. Here it is:

The base -- with its classic look, engraving areas, and plaque celebrating the two programs involved -- is exactly what you'd want. But did the crown piece have to be so completely, utterly generic?

Remove the Iowa and Nebraska logos, and you're looking at a metallic football that could be attached to any trophy for any rivalry in the country. It's a fine line between classy and boring --  this is still an improvement on, say, the corporate monstrosity that was the original design for this year's Iowa-Iowa State game -- but this strays too far over that line towards "eh." Couldn't the "leaf" details at least be a nod towards the much more Iowa-Nebraska-centric corn than wheat or, we guess, laurels? (Though you don't want to go too far in that direction, either.)

So overall, a solid effort, with just that little bit extra missing ... which, come to think of it, is a lot like Iowa's and Nebraska's 2011 seasons.  Maybe the designers know what they're doing afterall.

Bronceyesfan, I love that idea for the trophy. Not that you don't have enough seed sponsers, but i'm sure they would be lining up to get there name associated with such a game!

I think they should use the same base but instead of that bland football, there should be a cob of corn with laces in it on top.  I read on here last year (might have been longer ago) that this rivalry should be called "The Clash In the Cornfield".  I think that would be perfect considering Iowa is [heaven] the home of corn and Nebraska are the Cornhuskers (a name they got from Iowa - originally they were the Bug Eaters).

Gotta agree the authjor has gotten a little too "Mr. Blackwell nit-picky"
;regarding a trophy. Anyways a trophy is inanimate object. The real reward is seen on the playing field. Plus you have the cool thing of some locals getting recognized for going above and beyond.

I was at today's game, and Iowa and Nebraska student societies came up with their own trophy, the "Corn Bows" which is MUCH more individualized, and a gavel that will be passed to the winner each year.  As much as the new rivalry feels "manufactured", if actual students come up with something, I'm more accepting of it.

I beg to differ. I think it is a fine trophy. It isn't too unique, that what is so wrong with that? What do you want, a stalk of corn on top? The trophy is cool and it does have the logos of Nebraska and Iowa on it to make it unique. I believe the author is nit-picking here.
