Yet another coach has been relieved of his duties as Black Sunday continues in the college world. This time it's Kansas head coach Turner Gill, as the school announced on Sunday evening that Gill had been fired after two seasons with the Jayhawks.

“After a thorough evaluation of our football program,” said Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger in a release, “I have concluded that new leadership is necessary to place us on the path toward competing for championships in the Big 12 Conference.  I come to this conclusion reluctantly, because I have the utmost respect for Turner Gill as a quality individual who wants only the best for the young men he coaches.”

Recruiting coordinator Reggie Mitchell has been named interim head coach.

Zenger also said that the school will begin its search immediately. Kansas also intends to pay the $6 million it owes Gill for the final three years of the five-year $10 million contract he signed before the 2010 season.

In his two seasons at Kansas, the Jayhawks went 5-19 including a 1-16 record in the Big 12 and lost 10 games by 30 or more points.

Kansas fires Turner Gill

If KU is going to get back on track we're gonna have to do several things.  First and foremost we are going to have to open the checkbook up and write a pretty big check.  Count on it being more than the $2 million we paid gill.  I didn't think that Gill was the right choice from day one, but I think that hire had more to do with the Chancellor at KU than anything else.  We HAVE to get in a top tier coach and since we've lost all the momentum that we had from Mangino, money is going to have to be the biggest attractor we have.  I think the booster will pony up for a big name coach.

Second, and this ties in with the first point.  We have to a) quit taking risks on unproven coaches, and b) Get someone young but has a proven background.  I wonder if Mike Singletary would be interested in job....LMAO!

Third, we have to make it clear that KU wants to become more than just a top tier basketball university.  No offense to Roy, but he made it clear, at least in my mind that KU was going to remain a hoops school.  Self has outwardly shown support to the FB program, and I think he'll do what he can to help improve the football program as well.

Four, and again this ties back to one and two.  We have spent money on upgrading the facilities.  We have spent money on an unproven coach, this time we have to spend some money on...a GOOD COACH.

That being said, I don't know if this year was the year to fire Gill.  There are tons of young kids on the roster, and honestly, there just aren't any coaches out there that really get me excited.  Urban Meyer, sure, but he's most likely headed to Ohio State.  One of the Stoops brothers?  Not feeling that either.  Mike Leech?  I doubt it.  Jim Levitt?  Maybe but he got in hot water just like Mangino.

Idealy the dream canidate list would be:

John Gruden  (hey he's been seen arouind the area several times)

Brent Venebles (sp?) Probable, but I think the job he really wants is KSU when Synder leaves.

Mike Singletary (isn't his brother the linebacker coach?)  God it would be nice to see this hire, he's from Big XII country and there is no doubt the man is a defensive genius, and since we are supposedly built to run the football (or at least try) this might just be a sound hire....

But that's just wishing, in reality we will be stuck with another sub par coach.....sigh....

Your comments show why KU will never suceed. According to you they can't get qualified good coaches to come to the school, so you should go back and redo your past and bring back the coach you fired 2 yrs. ago.  Right fresh off he's own 7 game losing streak.

1) KU has rehired a fired coach before.  How did that work out?
2) What makes you think Mangino would even come back?

He knows that the school will not be in a BCS conference in a couple months.

It is obvious that CajHawk84 doesn't watch very much football.  I take great exception that Kansas is the worst team in the BCS.  He obviously has not watched the University of Kentucky.  We are much more inept that Kansas at football.  Why we had several games with single digit first downs and several quarters where we gained less than 10 yards and our quarterback almost never had interceptions because he threw the ball so far away from the receivers that nobody was there to catch it or intercept it.  About half way through the season, about 50% of our offensive plays went for no gain, an interception or fumble and we were ranked about 118 in offense.  Beat that.

JHwaker: You hit it right on the head you are sorry!!!  I planted that comment in so someone like you would comment on the one time in you 120+ year of history you went to back to back bowls games.  1 in 120+ I'm very proud of you.

By the way I was born in the state.  Why would I not support it's basketball team. Hell son I support OU also.
I just happen to have that kind of money!

As a HUSKIES fan, my teeth are clenched right now after having read b/s like this.  Yeah, good ol' Ty Losingham, who brought an 0-AND-12 season to Washington, is such a 'great coach'.  *ROLLS eyes*

I think I have addressed exactly what I admired about Coach Willingham, and why he was fired by ND.  It is not my problem that you are upset by his performance at Udub.  Granted, his win-loss record is a factor, but not the only factor in his evaluation as a coach.  Based on the way you insult and disrespect Coach Willingham, I wonder little what your priorities are in terms of a coach and a program.  Maybe you should look at the bright side... at least Udub won't be vacating any bowl victories or losing any scholarships.  Further, in my opinion, the young men will be positively impacted by their association with Coach Willingham.  Just because you have no respect doesn't change the fact that he is indeed a class act.
