Yet another coach has been relieved of his duties as Black Sunday continues in the college world. This time it's Kansas head coach Turner Gill, as the school announced on Sunday evening that Gill had been fired after two seasons with the Jayhawks.

“After a thorough evaluation of our football program,” said Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger in a release, “I have concluded that new leadership is necessary to place us on the path toward competing for championships in the Big 12 Conference.  I come to this conclusion reluctantly, because I have the utmost respect for Turner Gill as a quality individual who wants only the best for the young men he coaches.”

Recruiting coordinator Reggie Mitchell has been named interim head coach.

Zenger also said that the school will begin its search immediately. Kansas also intends to pay the $6 million it owes Gill for the final three years of the five-year $10 million contract he signed before the 2010 season.

In his two seasons at Kansas, the Jayhawks went 5-19 including a 1-16 record in the Big 12 and lost 10 games by 30 or more points.

Notre Dame was completely unjustified in firing Coach Willingham after 3 years of a 5 year contract... ND really blew it with Coach Willingham.  He may not have won on the field as much as expected, but he was a class act all the way.
As a HUSKIES fan, my teeth are clenched right now after having read b/s like this.  Yeah, good ol' Ty Losingham, who brought an 0-AND-12 season to Washington, is such a 'great coach'.  *ROLLS eyes*

We Huskies fans heard and endured more than any fan should ever have to about Losingham's supposed 'class act' persona, for a minimum of a full season after UDub should've given him the axe.  The truth is, he dipped into the well of success for only a short time while at Stanford, and shouldn't have ever gotten the ND job in the first place.  I will agree that they should have kept him, though... had they done so, he wouldn't have appeared on the scene at Washington.

It would be hard to do a better job of pushing a Husky fan's buttons than making a post which lionizes Losingham can do.

At long last? The guy got 2 years. Maybe he wasn't any good, but this is KU football we are talking about. One lucky season does not make this a good program. Stick to bball and hope your conference doesn't implode.

KU should never of fired Mangino when they did. He wasn't going to win a National Championship, but he was moving the program in the right direction. They should of stuck with him another 3-5 years, gotten to some more bowls and made KU more attractive to top tier coaches. Instead, they fire him, hire Gill and in just 2 years, everything Mangino did to make KU more attractive has been wiped clean. KU is starting from square one again. KU should of started making football a higher priority 40 years ago.

Here is the list of coaches that the Kansas Jayhawks have on there rador

 Mike Leach
 Dave Doeren
Urban Meyer

I love KU to death, but I highly doubt that they even get an interview with Urban Meyer.  Also it's gonna be hard to justify Leach, after they ran Manginio out of town for basically the exact same thing that Leach was accussed of at Texas Tech.  They should Manginio on their short list, but they won't.  Maybe Mike Stoops, but even seems like to much of a big name for a program that has been driven straight into the ground.  It wasn't all Gill's fault, he got hired right before the Perkins, jumped ship, and the new AD was sruck with a coach he didn't pick, who wasn't recruiting well, and wasn't winning football games.

Keep Dreaming, Buddy.

Its one thing to say you want to have a great football program, but what has the University of Kansas done to move in that direction?  New facilities?  New stadium???  Anything????

You have track around your football field for crap sakes!  So does my high school and the NAIA team in my town.

You need facilites.  You cant just say you want a willing program and do nothing to improve it.

People in Love with Kansas football are some of the dumbest, most blind, shortminded, disillusioned fans in the country.
They act as though they have some great football history.  They have never had back to back years where they have gone to bowl games. Did you hear me.  NEVER. Big 6, Big 8, Big 12, Big 10 (now).  NEVER.  So that should tell you that they have made alot of mistakes in hiring and firing coaches.

Oldschool4U, You are one of the dumbest, most blind, shortminded, dillusioned people in the country.  KU has in fact had back to back years where they have gone to bowl games.  The 2007 Season they played in the Orange Bowl, and after the 2008 season they played in the Insight Bowl.  Too bad you couldn't check your facts before making yourself look like an idiot...maybe next time.

Funny that KU is listed as your favorite team in basketball, is that because Nebraska sucks at Basketball?  How can your favorite team be different in NCAA Football and NCAA Basketball.  Personally, I think its a shame you decided not to go to KU 31 years ago, if you had you might not of looked so foolish when you wrote this comment.

Notre Dame was completely unjustified in firing Coach Willingham after 3 years of a 5 year contract.  I have a similar feeling about KU and Turner Gill, but I will let that go, because I expect more from Notre Dame based on what they claim to stand for.  I know based on first hand experience that ND has a track record of trying to do things right in terms of athletics.  I am proud of my alma mater in that regard.  They honored their word with Coach Faust during my tenure, and rightly so.  In my opinion, however, ND really blew it with Coach Willingham.  He may not have won on the field as much as expected, but he was a class act all the way.  Players talked about how he was a mentor and a father figure to them.  He shaped character in ways that few had touched their lives.  He emphasized academics and being responsible individuals and was a coach that was concerned with the development of young men's lives.  Given this greater success, I see absolutely no justification for not honoring their commitment and word to him.  Coach Willingham is one of the finest men associated with the ND program and their actions toward him make themselves unworthy of association with him.  Unfortunately, the measure of a coach lately seems al about the wins and losses and resutant money and power that can be garnered.  We need not look very far to see where that philosophy leads... the debacle of Coach Tressel at OSU, and the ultimately much more serious events at Penn State.  Any program is in danger when it becomes larger than life, or as it were, larger than the charge of running a program with integrity and to the benefit of the student athletes.  I think that, in short, greed got in the way at ND, and the program has unfortunately suffered since then.  Performance of a coach is about much more than wins and losses, and until we realize that, I predict that college football will remain in a sad state.

$10 million for two years of work that featured five victories and a 1-16 record in the Big 12?

I challenge anybody to find a better job than that.
Amen!  4 million salary for 2 years of losing, and then get fired and take another 6 million with you. Where do I apply?
