Yet another coach has been relieved of his duties as Black Sunday continues in the college world. This time it's Kansas head coach Turner Gill, as the school announced on Sunday evening that Gill had been fired after two seasons with the Jayhawks.

“After a thorough evaluation of our football program,” said Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger in a release, “I have concluded that new leadership is necessary to place us on the path toward competing for championships in the Big 12 Conference.  I come to this conclusion reluctantly, because I have the utmost respect for Turner Gill as a quality individual who wants only the best for the young men he coaches.”

Recruiting coordinator Reggie Mitchell has been named interim head coach.

Zenger also said that the school will begin its search immediately. Kansas also intends to pay the $6 million it owes Gill for the final three years of the five-year $10 million contract he signed before the 2010 season.

In his two seasons at Kansas, the Jayhawks went 5-19 including a 1-16 record in the Big 12 and lost 10 games by 30 or more points.

Black coaches need to do more research and evaluation before taking these jobs
What? Are you saying they're stupid and naive? Turner was lucky to get a job in a top conference based on his resume and coming off a losing record. They gave him a long contract worth millions. Research? It was a gift! He was smart enough to accept it.

Kansas can win. So can Iowa State. Any team can win with the right guy. Look at what Snyder did twice @ K-State. Look at what Gundy has done @ OSU. Bobby Petrino made Louisville viable. Schiano made Rutgers respectable. Schellenberger made Miami a champion.. Paterno made PSU a power. Harbaugh rebuilt Stanford into a power. None of those places were recruiting havens before them.

Equality will only come when black coaches get canned and no one says anything, because it will be common place like when white coaches get fired. If AD's keep them based on their color, not their production, then they're the greatest racists of all. That means they lowered the standards because of the color of their skin. That's true racism.

Gill never should of been hired to begin with. It was a bad hire. That said, it must be nice to be able to retire for life after 2 losing seasons, coaching Kansas.

Turner Gill, Ron Zook and Dennis Erickson all were fired and supposedly Neuheisel is next according to reports. They all deserve to be fired. Gill is incompetent, Zook clueless and Erickson is a sleazebag whose team never plays defense. Neuheisel's team is pedestrian despite "winning" his team's division and playing for a Rose Bowl berth. He also hasn't done the job and deserves the axe. No one should feel sorry for them. They got great money to coach these teams and failed. Others deserve a chance in their stead. None got a bum rap.

Next year other coaches will be exposed and run out of excuses and rope. It happens every year. Those who fail get fired, others get a chance to succeed. That's the nature of competition. Most leave with a nice compensation package after being paid 10-20 times more than most professors. Boo Hoo.

Black coaches need to do more research and evaluation before taking these jobs. To win in the Big 12 at Kansas or K-State you have to be a great coach and a great recruiter. You also have to time your arrival with an incoming group of freshmen from the state who can play at the next level. And then you have to retire or go to another job like Bill Snyder and Glen Mason. If you stay too long you will start losing again.

The state of Kansas does not produce on a yearly basis enough D1 players for one major college program let alone two. You have to get the best players from Kansas and then pick the leftovers from Texas. Every 5 or 6 years the state produces a crop of players that can compete at a high level.

Having said all of that, Turner Gill would have been a fool to turn down 10 million. He did a horrible job and deserved to be fired.

Well said, Ed.  KU's schedule during their Orange Bowl year was the weakest of all the Big 12 teams. I know this won't sit well with you, but Mizzou got hosed that season when the OB shut em out and invited KU.  Granted, KU made a great showing, but Mizzou had just beaten them on a neutral site, and had been ranked #1 that season. Mangino made KU competitive, but not nationally relevant.

Since you seem to want to view this through the perspective of race, understand that the opportunities that African-American coaches are receiving in D-1 are often the hardest turnarounds to effect.  The expectations at ND are ridiculous (ask Lou Holtz who won an NCAA championship there but had to leave).  Coach Willingham should probably have stayed at Washington, where I think he was doing well.  Sylvester Croom took over at Mississipi State, traditionally an SEC West bottom dweller.

Total bull. How was Shaw getting the Stanford job a bad one? How about Willingham @ Notre Dame? How about Willingham @ Washington? Ty went to both schools and had 4 losing seasons out of 5 including a winless season @ Washington, the first in school history. He took over 2 programs which have a rich tradition and he failed miserably. Ty should change his name to Lose.

Doing well @ Washington? Do you follow the sport? He had 3 straight losing campaigns where he went a combined 8-25. His team was getting blown out every week. The last few years @ ND he also was under .500.

Croom also did squat. Look at what Mullins is doing there now. That's a real coach. Croom got his shot and fell flat on his face.

Strong got a shot @ Louisville after being a top coordinator and has turned them around. Houston's coach Kevin Sumlin is also African-American. Both those programs were decent-good programs with a winning tradition of late. Again, bad jobs? How about Virginia? Is that a bad job as well? Their coach just completed a solid year. Oh and he's African-American as well.

There are no bad jobs, just bad coaches. Turner Gill is a bad coach. His last year @ Buffalo they went 5-7, yet Kansas stupidly hired him to a long deal. Did you ever wonder why his alma mater passed him over? Then Auburn? They knew he wasn't a good coach and they hired 2 good ones. How smart do those AD's look now?

Anyone making a case for Turner based on race is pathetic. He's a bad coach. His team didn't even compete. They were humiliated week after week. Mangino gave him a team which had talent and had started to win over his last few years. If anything, he got as raw deal, not Turner. Turner was a college QB, yet his QB play was laughable. No one deserved the axe more. No one deserved the job less in the first place. Name me a coach coming off a losing season and having won a nothing except for a MAC title getting a job with a FBS team in a major conference?

Btw, Holtz didn't leave because of expectations on the field. He was forced out because Davie backstabbed him on recruiting and he was forced out, then Davie took his job. Now, he's coaching the worst team in FBS. Oh and he's white.

This dismissal ad nothing to do with race. Poor game preparation led to this team's demise and that is on Gill's clock. He did step up the recruitment and there were fewer character issues over the past 2 years and credit goes to Gill. Nonetheless, winning games is ultimately what you are evaluated on and Gill failed miserably.

Gill can look at the bright side... Gene Chizik went 5-19 at Iowa State and got a gig at Auburn. Not that he'll be there very long, but at least he got paid.

I can understand the belief that Tyrone Willingham did not have a fair chance at Notre Dame. Looking at his predecessor and successor, that belief is very valid and brings into questions the morals of Notre Dame. However, Mangino had Kansas in a BCS bowl recently, and now Gill hasmade them by far the worst in the Big 12 and probably the worst in all the BCS conferences. He's lucky he made it through the entire season!
