Yet another coach has been relieved of his duties as Black Sunday continues in the college world. This time it's Kansas head coach Turner Gill, as the school announced on Sunday evening that Gill had been fired after two seasons with the Jayhawks.

“After a thorough evaluation of our football program,” said Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger in a release, “I have concluded that new leadership is necessary to place us on the path toward competing for championships in the Big 12 Conference.  I come to this conclusion reluctantly, because I have the utmost respect for Turner Gill as a quality individual who wants only the best for the young men he coaches.”

Recruiting coordinator Reggie Mitchell has been named interim head coach.

Zenger also said that the school will begin its search immediately. Kansas also intends to pay the $6 million it owes Gill for the final three years of the five-year $10 million contract he signed before the 2010 season.

In his two seasons at Kansas, the Jayhawks went 5-19 including a 1-16 record in the Big 12 and lost 10 games by 30 or more points.

Race my butt.....it is all about winning the numbers speak for themselves ... speaking of  numbers he was making more money than Gundy at Oklahoma State. OSU is in the top five where is Kansas? You could throw a race card here and say Gill was paid more than a white guy because he is black.  See how stupid it sounds

Scotto:

2 years isn't enough time and an embarrassment  for someone the stature of Turner Gill to get especially being an African American head coach not given a chance. Look around White coaches are given more of a chance when there are plenty around that should have been fired long ago."

You can't be serious? Really? The race card? 1-16 in the conference? Losing 10 games by 30 or more points? Recruiting QB's with no clue as to reading defenses? Taking $10 million as you leave with 3 years left on the deal?

Tell me: Who wins in this situation and who loses? Turner Gill was given a chance to compete in the Big 12 as a head football coach. How many of those are there? I'll let you count them... It doesn't work out on the competitive side and Kansas elects to replace him BUt pays him the remaining money owed through the end of the contract.

Seriously, race?

It's this type of ignorant thinking that undermines all of the advances that have been made on behalf of African-American patriots. Turner Gill is a class act. I followed him at UB and he will land on his feet like all good coaches who have high character AND can coach.

Please do us a favor and withhold the racial implications. Take off the biased set of glasses and man up to just getting the job done. TG didn't get the job done and more so, showed he was incapable by virtue of his performance and performance only.

Usually I think that a coach deserves at LEAST 3 years at a program before they can fire him but in this case i don't. He went 1-16 in big 12 games and that one win he had was a lucky win against Colorado. The big stat for me is 10 losses by 30 or more points, that shows KU was not even competitive in most games. He was doomed from the start at KU. Now for KU what they need to do is go get someone who can restore some sort of respect in this program. What we need to do is get a offensive minded head coach, and a  strong defensive coordinator. I think Mike Leech is a great option he knows the Big 12 well and has a great offensive mind. He would be able to recruit and get some nice prospects into Lawrence. I hope this program can restore at lest some respect over the next few years.

You're main point is right but your notion that it has to do with race isn't worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin gettin it on. Gill got fired cuz kansas got all excited about their 1 year of importance and now they expect to compete with the big boys every year. They have blown up expectations that no one is going to be able to fill. Your right that he should have been given more time I completely agree with you there. But it has nothing to do with the color of his skin.

Racism?  REALLY?  Take your lips off the crack pipe, Scott.  When you lose 15 out of 16 in the Big 12, it's time to go.

It's a shame, because Gill is a man of integrity, but anybody who didn't see this coming wasn't looking very hard.  The Jayhawks have been just LOUSY since they ran Mangino out of town.

I wonder if Nebraska had Gill on their list of potential successors to Bill Callahan a couple of years back?

This is exactly why kids going into college should come to Kansas for basketball only. Turner Gill is a darn good coach that once again wasn't given a chance to succeed in a big time program. He inherited mark Mangino's players and could do nothing with them. Don't get me wrong, he probably had recruited some of the players here but in my opinion this is a Tyrone Willingham situation all over again. Every coach at Notre Dame was given 5 years to succeed and turn the program into something. bob Davie after taking over for the legendary Lou Holtz was given 5 years. He did well, but not well enough. after Willingham left Charlie Weis was given 5 years and did absolutely nothing after being labeled an offensive guru or genious. Now, Willingham got 3 very reluctant years and wasn't given a chance. Hate to say it but the African American coaches aren't given a chance to succeed.

If you sign a coach to a 5 year contract give him a chance to fufill the life of the contract. Let him try and recruit his type of players to fill his system. There is a reason why he succeeded in Buffalo and as an assistant coach in this game. Granted the Big 12 is tough to recruit in especially with the Texas and Oklahoma schools being in that conference. 2 years isn't enough time and an embarrassment  for someone the stature of Turner Gill to get especially being an African American head coach not given a chance. Look around White coaches are given more of a chance when there are plenty around that should have been fired long ago.
