UPDATE:'s Dennis Dodd confirms that Urban Meyer will be the next football coach at Ohio State, ending weeks of speculation about his future and the Buckeyes' coaching position.

The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that a football-related news conference is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. ET.

Weeks of speculation and denial have reportedly come to an end, and Urban Meyer officially will be the next coach at Ohio State.

Meyer's agent reportedly confirmed to ESPN on Monday morning the former Florida Gators coach had accepted the Ohio State coaching job, the first official confirmation after reports from local throughout last week were vehemently denied.'s Dennis Dodd confirmed that was no official deal in place as of last Wednesday. It makes sense that Ohio State would not move forward crossing "t's" and dotting "i's" until the Buckeyes wrapped up their regular season. Ohio State fell to Michigan 40-34 on Saturday in the Big House, their first loss in the last seven years of the rivalry.

The Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports that interim head coach Luke Fickell will have the opportunity to remain on staff, but the former defensive coordinator may choose to pursue other opportunities. Assistance coach Stan Drayton, a former Meyer colleague, is also expected to have the opportunity to stay in Columbus.

This is Meyer's second return from retirement. The former Gators coach retired then immediately returned in 2009, before retiring for good in 2010. Citing health and family reasons, Meyer decided to take some time away from coaching and has spent the last year serving as an analyst for ESPN. Ohio State is bowl eligible, though the Buckeyes will not be officially extended an invitation until after the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday.

Meyer not Ohio St. coach yet; deal appears close

Biggest thing for Ohio St or any school for that matter is recruiting.  It's what made Jim Tressel at Ohio St.  He kept Ohio kids in Ohio and was a great National recruiter.  Urban Meyer has the same qualities.  He is an Ohio guy and instantly creates recruiting excitement just by signing.  The first thing you have to have for any program to succeed, no matter the level including high school, college, or the NFL, is good players coming through the pipeline and I see no reason why Urban Meyer wont by able to make that happen.

Jim Tressel
Urban Meyer
Les Miles
Bob Stoops
Bo Pelini
Nick Saban
Pete Carrol

Paul Brown
Woody Hayes
Bo Schembechler
Ara Parseghian
Don Shula
Chuck Nole

Just to name a few... It is always good when a Buckeye is leading the Buckeyes...

Gator here.. and acknowledge there are two sides of the coin here. Urban could have fully intended on taking "many years" off but timing is everything.. a coaching job like OSU woulnd't be available again so jump on it. The other side of the coin however is he's a quitter. He quit on Florida and dug the knife in deeper with this decision. I have no respect for him. He left our program with a 5-loss team and took another job 10 months later?? Here's to hoping OSU gets sanctioned out of the arse.

first i would like to say great job to the florida fans with no class! yea bash the guy that won you 2 national championships! urban meyer owes florida and the SEC fans NOTHING!

as for ohio state i can say how great of a hire this is for ohio state. the expectations will be very high but doable. i loved the success tress brought to ohio state but the scandal was a major black eye on the university. we now have a coach that will bring in top talent and know how to use his talent. i have followed his coaching path all the way back to BGSU. he knows how to spread the field and make his teams dangerous.

lastly can the university get rid of gee and smith???

Meyer not Ohio St. coach yet; deal appears close

Gators/Dolphins Florida beat Ohio State in a national title game without Tebow so they did pretty good.  He also coached and undefeated Utah team to the first ever non-BCS league team to a BCS bowl win.   Meyer is a good coach but he will have huge shoes to fill in Tressell who won 9/10 against scUM.  Hopefully Fickell will remain on staff.

Gator Dolphins really, or are you spouting off sour grapes? Urban didn't have Tim Tebow @ Bowling Green, or Utah and his offenses did fine...and this another thing I don't get about SEC fans..if your conference is truly the best then Meyer's offense was facing the best defenses in the country right? So therefore his offense should rocket through the Big Ten, unless your saying the Big Ten is a better overall conference than the SEC and will shut down Ohio State's offense completely. Not to mention Meyer went 12-1 and won a title in '06 with Chris Leak taking 80% of the your research sir and you'll fine just how assinine you sound

As an Ohio State fan I can honestly say that it has given me great pleasure to watch Florida struggle this season as well. Wanting a guy that won 2 national titles in 6 years to leave??? I don't believe you, but you can spin Florida's loss of Meyer any way you like. Be careful what you wish for.
