So it turns out that no matter what happens in Friday night's inaugural Pac-12 Championship Game, it will not be the final time UCLA plays this season. The NCAA announced on Wednesday that it had approved UCLA's bowl waiver petition.

“As a program, we appreciate the NCAA approving our petition for a bowl waiver,” said UCLA Director of Athletics Dan Guerrero in a release. “We will be able to give our 18 seniors one more chance to represent their university and end their collegiate careers on a high note, regardless of the outcome of this Friday’s Pac-12 Championship Game. We’d like to thank the NCAA for considering the unique situation in which we find ourselves this year and rewarding us with this opportunity.”

The reason this was in question was because UCLA finished the regular season at 6-6, in second place in the Pac-12's South Division, but due to USC's postseason ban, the Bruins were the team to move on to the championship game. Well, if UCLA loses that game against heavily-favored Oregon, the Bruins would be 6-7 on the season, and teams with losing records aren't normally allowed to play in bowl games.

That is, not without a waiver from the NCAA.

As for where UCLA would play in a bowl game, CBSSports.com's Jerry Palm currently has the Bruins projected to face Illinois in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl

NCAA approves UCLA's bowl waiver petition

I like UCLA, but this is just crazy.  I don't even think that a 6-6 team should be bowl eligible because of the very real possibility of losing the bowl game and finishing with a losing record.  But sending a 6-7 team to a bowl, where they face the possibility of finishing 6-8 is just plain crazy.

And another thing....the NCAA just took away all incentive for UCLA to play hard in the PAC-12 Championship.  The only way that game is remotely interesting is if UCLA is playing for a chance at a bowl game.  Now that that element has been removed, expect another 50-0 pasting of the Bruins.

Funny how people make a big deal of a 3rd place Big Ten School going to a BCS bowl, when a 3rd place SEC school is going to the National Championship game..

Too many bowls period! not only teams with overall losing records, but also teams with losing conference records, should not be eligble for any post season. Whats next a 3rd place team from the Big 10, going to a BCS bowl!

Am I the only non UCLA fan that wants them to win? How great would it be to have UCLA win the Pac12 and the BCS would have to take them for a bowl. This would be the perfect case against the BCS snobs that are always saying that the regular season matters and every game counts, and that is the reason college football doesn't need a playoff. Please Oregon lay down in this game if you support a playoff system, you aren't going to the championship anyways.

Okay, finally we have the evidence needed to say that there are too many bowl games.  There is no way UCLA should be rewarded for a season that is at best, mediocrity right now.  I'm even willing to say that there is no way that my alma mater, Florida, with a 6-6 record, deserves to go to a bowl game.  There should be no reward whatsoever for mediocrity.  If this will leave bowls without team to play in them, then it is time to shut down bowl games, period.

The NCAA is a joke

Approving a losing team for a bowl game?  Who the hell are they going to play, a .500 team from some crap conference?  Give me a break.  If the fans and residents of whatever community is sponsoring the bowl game UCLA ends up in buy tickets, they deserve to get screwed.  No one should be forced to be subjected to this.

Who will coach the game if UCLA is invited to a bowl game?  The championship is Neuheisel's last game.
