Chris Petersen turns down UCLA's offer

Since firing Rick Neuheisel, UCLA's top choice to be their new head coach has been Boise State's Chris Petersen, but it doesn't look like UCLA is something Petersen is interested in.

According to a report at, UCLA reached out to Petersen and was told that he will not be a candidate.

Petersen also gave up quite a bit to stay at Boise, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times on Friday night. Petersen was apparently offered a deal that would have paid him nearly $4 million a year and given him $3 million to spend on assistants. Petersen reportedly turned down the money and chose to stay at Boise State for "lifestyle reasons."

Now that Petersen is out of the running, it's not clear who UCLA's second choice would be, though Houston's Kevin Sumlin, former Oregon head coach Mike Belotti and former Raiders head coach Tom Cable have all been mentioned as possible candidates. If Sumlin is next on the list, UCLA will have to move fast as he's a popular choice at just about every other school with a coaching vacancy at the moment.

Petersen has been the head coach at Boise State since 2006 and his name has come up as a candidate at many different schools over that time, but he's never left Boise State nor has he expressed much interest in doing so.

UCLA plays Oregon on Friday night in the Pac-12 Championship Game.

Chris Petersen won't be going to UCLA

I truly believe Petersen is one of the best coaches in College Football,  BUT until he takes a job that does include 9 cream puff games on its schedule he will NEVER be in the class of Saban, Miles, Stoops, Spurrier, Chip Kelly, even Urban Meyer. and a number of other coaches.

Great post BigWood,

Those are two teams Ucla COULDN'T beat!!!  Last I looked Boise has been trying to upgrade their conference, looking to join the Pac-10(didn't happen) and now the Big East.  My hat is off to them.  Pac-10 didn't want to see them SLAPPING their teams around every year, they schedule as big a team as possible(See Oregon, Georgia, Va Tech, etc.), and constantly win the big games.

I am a Nebraska fan, but they have a MUCH better program right now, and for the last ten years.

Chris Petersen won't be going to UCLA

It's going to take a lot to get Peterson away from Boise and it has nothing to do with football. Peterson has a special relationship with Boise State because of his son and the support Boise has given him in dealing with his child's medical condition. It would take something extraordinary. Being second boat in even the biggest pond isn't going to do it for him. It would have to be a PREMIER program with no NCAA scandal. UCLA is not a premiere program. If Muschamp falls on his face again next year, I could see Peterson taking the Florida job - maybe.

I find this very interesting.  North Carolina has reached out to Peterson as well, and so far there has been no formal announcement of his intentions.  His wife was up two weeks ago checking out the UNC Medical Center and I have been told that the entire family is due to be in Chapel Hill on December 5th.  Don't know if that is still the plan, but I am surprised that he gave UCLA the "Heisman" so quickly.

Why should he go to UCLA? He is just comfortable at Boise State winning 10 games a year by playing "creampuffs."

Did your parents have any children who born WITH a brain?

I don't blame him at all. Even though Boise don't play many big time schools, they win and have some pride about themselves. As for Coach P i have great respect for him because he has not did like alot of these coaches have. They run for a school because of their tradition, tradition don't equal wins just ask Notre Dame. Take a big contract with a awful job, win 4 games a year and be fired in 3 years max. Stay where you are, plus they will never out recruit USC.
