Dayne Crist is leaving Notre Dame

Notre Dame quarterback Dayne Crist has asked for and been granted his release from the school and will begin talks with other schools about a transfer according to the Chicago Tribune.

This does not come as much of a shock to anybody who has been paying attention to Notre Dame this season. After beginning the season as the team's starter after a competition with Tommy Rees during the spring and fall, Crist lasted only one half before being benched for Rees in Notre Dame's season-opening loss to South Florida.

Yet, even when the Notre Dame offense struggled with turnovers the next few weeks under Rees, Crist only saw playing time after Rees suffered an injury and had to come out. Crist was even surpassed by Andrew Hendrix, who came in as a change of pace quarterback over the last month of the season.

Crist met with head coach Brian Kelly to discuss his situation on Friday.

Since Crist has only one year of eligibility left he will not be required to sit out a year before playing at another school. Exactly what school that will be is not known, though Wisconsin, Utah and San Diego State have all been mentioned as possibilities while rumors swirled Crist would transfer over the last few weeks.

Dayne Crist is leaving Notre Dame

Dear Golden-Dome Apologist

I can name 8 MAC QB's who are in the NFL right now, most of whom are doing well and when I try and come up with ND qb's in the NFL all I can come up with is that stoog in Denver who couldnt start in CLEVELAND. Why anyone from ND would look down on ANY confernce puzzles me. ND's football program is a joke, thhead coaches that you've hired since Holtz left have been complete failures.
The ND program hasnt had a relevant team since the 90's. The players who do make it to the NFL don't do well there..so you need to look that the ND program thru the eyes of someone who doesnt worship them...THYE SUCK!

Crist will graduate with a degree from ND.  He will be eligible to play next year since he has alreay graduated.
Well, almost.  If Crist graduates before he attempts to transfer, then he will be eligible to play in the fall of 2012.  If, however, he decides to transfer before finalizing his undergraduate degree, then he would have to sit out one year.  Hopefully for Crist's sake, he's kept up on his classes and is in line to graduate in the spring.  Since nothing has been said about this publicly, I'm willing to wager he needs to complete that last semester before he bolts from Notre Dame.

If he belongs at a second rate football school it seems he should have stayed at ND.

Like the earlier post, I love watching Kelly and think he will melt down soon too.  The hiring of Kelly by ND was a terrible one, much like the Rich Rod hire by michigan.  They both went with a hot coach who did not have much history (although RR had much more than Kelly) and both will be getting burned.  Very rarely does the hot coach work out.  They may have had a great recruiting class mature or just gotten lucky with a few walk-ons.

I think watching Kelly is a combination of Art Shell (1000 yard stare) and Steve Spurrier at FL (inches from crying).  Whenever Kelly blows up, its gonna be good.

Probably a very good move for Crist, he gets away from a volitile situation. Brian Kelly is a meltdown ready to happen. I watch only a couple ND games a year and I love watching Kelly's face turn beet-red as he spews profanity when he's mad. Very entertaining. ND football is avg and will continue like that under Kelly.

This kid will be a great pick up for any team. Kelly disliked him from day one and really treated the situation poorly.
You know why? It's because he was the most overhyped QB they had. He's not bright. He wilts under pressure. He's not a leader. He belongs in the MAC conference or for some second tier team in Conference USA or on any Sun Belt team.

I'm a big ND fan and the first time I saw him as QB. I immediately knew Notre Dame was doomed with him. He has no poise or a clue. Crist can't pick up defenses or secondary receivers. Dayne doesn't move fluently. He also has no toughness at all.  Kelly wants an athlete and a guy who can think, is tough and mobile at that position. Rees got his shot, but his lack of accuracy and fumbled may have doomed him. So Hendrix gets his shot. That kid has moxie. Crist has none of that. He's basically a pocket passer with no guts or instincts. Let him go play eslewhere, put up decent numbers and be ignored. Good luck.

Kelly didn't treat him poorly. He benched him and kept him there. Kelly didn't jerk his chain. When Rees failed, Brian didn't go back to him. He went to Hendrix. Why should he go to a player he didn't recruit and who he has no faith in? Who did Crist ever beat to earn that right? Crist came out of the box this year flopping against a team that went 5-7. Crist got his shot to prove he could lead and he couldn't even shine on Opening Day at home against a bad team.

Oh and please don't tell me how good he was in HS. There are plenty of those players who fell flat on their faces never to be heard from again. Ron Powlus anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

ND will move forward with Hendrix, Rees and whomever Kelly brings in next year. I'm fine with that. If I never see Dayne Crist play again, I won't lose a wink of sleep. In fact, his game puts me to sleep. As an ND fan, the sleep involves nightmares.

Bye Dayne and don't let the doot hit you on the way out.

I hear a lot of "poor Crist," and  "Kelly destroyed his confidence."  Dude had a shot to play at the most storied university in NCAA history and he didn't take advantage of it.  Coaches aren't on the field, and if his poor feelings get hurt because a coach yells at him he shouldn't be playing football.  The kid Hendrix who played down the stretch against Stanford probably doesn't have Crist's tools, but he showed he at least had a pair.

That being said, good luck Crist.  Personally, I think you are making a mistake.  You'll never go pro, and a degree from ND looks a lot better than one from whatever school at which you ultimately end up.  Unless, of course, an Ivy league school or perhaps Stanford go QB shopping.
