Cliff Harris dismissed from Oregon football team

Cliff Harris' career at Oregon has come to an end. The former All-American was dismissed from the Ducks on Monday, according to a statement released by the football team.

According to a report in The Fresno Bee on Monday night, Harris was cited for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana in Fresno, which led to his release.

Harris had a dynamite sophomore season with Oregon, earning consensus All-American honors as a punt returner (and also being a second-team AP All-American as a cornerback); he was on several preseason All-American lists and was expected to be one of the premier players in the Pac-12 this season.

The marijuana citation was not the first time Harris found himself on the wrong side of the law at Oregon. Harris had several driving incidents plague him throughout his time in Eugene, and he was suspended twice in 2011 for rather flagrant disregard of traffic laws; Harris was cited for going 118 miles an hour in June, and that led to a suspension that kept Harris out of the Ducks' season-opening 40-27 loss to LSU.

A subsequent citation in late October this year  -- for driving with a suspended license, without a seatbelt, and without valid insurance -- led to an indefinite suspension that has lasted to this day. Now, head coach Chip Kelly is content to move on without his star defensive back.

Harris logged just nine tackles and an interception (albeit one returned for 50 yards, against Arizona State) in the six games he played in the 2011 season. He leaves as Oregon's career leader in yards per punt return and one of just four consensus All-Americans in the program's history.

Here is the statement from the program in full:

University of Oregon cornerback Cliff Harris has been dismissed from the Ducks’ football program for a violation of team rules, according to the Ducks’ Head Coach Chip Kelly Monday.

Harris was suspended indefinitely on Oct. 24 and has since been prohibited from all football activities, missing Oregon’s last five games of the regular season in addition to last Friday’s Pac-12 Conference Championship.

The Fresno, Calif., junior had been credited with nine tackles and one interception in six games this season after missing the season-opening loss to LSU while serving another suspension.

The 2010 consensus All-American finishes his Oregon career with 61 tackles in 27 appearances, eight interceptions for one touchdown, and returned 38 punts for a 16.2-yard average and four more scores.

I for one am glad to see coaches make those tough decisions, that is one reason we pay them the money we do. What I don't like is this mentality that because they are great players they get special treatment. Spurrier should have gotten rid of Garcia long before he did, just as Chip Kelly did here. These kids are student-athletes, with the "student" being first. I'm tired of the "we need this guy" talk. The programs were there before they joined the team and will continue after they leave. Great coaches recruit great players, so they can find a replacement. Should it be one mistake and you're done? No. Let the coach make those decisions, based on what was done and what punishment will be administered.

Are you people really this stupid or just LSU jealous haters.  How can you compare what Mathieu has done to what Harris did.  How many times was Harris involved with the police?  Mathieu has never been involved with the police and has never been arrested.  This was not about marijuana or fake marijuana, but about a person that was a terrible teammate that had several run-ins with the law.  If you think these are idential cases, then you are indeed idiots.  Hate really brings out the stupidity in some people.

"I wonder why he got dismissed while Tyrann Mathieu got a 1 game suspension. Maybe because he was caught for it while Tyrann got a Drug test."

Perhaps because Tyrann goes to LSU and Cliff went to Oregon?! Everything's a situation and therefore different, no matter their similarities. Eugene isn't Baton Rouge. Chip Kelly isn't Les Miles. Louisiana is historically more inclined to tolerate boys being boys, just as it's a bit more at peace with public corruption. The Southeast places greater importance on football than does the Northwest and is thus less inclined to cut down its weeds.

Actually, the answer to your question is that what Tyrann Mathieu took was a "synthetic marijuana" -- which is NOT against the law, and is sold over the counter at convenience stores.

What Cliff Harris took was REAL MJ -- an illegal drug even in California, without a prescription.  Add all the other shiite that Harris has done, Oregon finally had enough of him, after giving him numerous chances.

Sorry you couldn't get it together Cliff.  You had a great opportunity to play for a winner and go the NFL.  You still might go to the NFL but your road just got harder.  Put down the 'herb' and pick up the pieces of your life, bro!

Goodbye Cliff

You were more of a distraction than you were worth.  You were extremely selfish and didn't seem to care a bit about your teammates.  I for one will wish you well as you enter the NFL.  May you make lots of money.
