One of the most wide-open Heisman races in recent memory has entered the final stage, with the finalists for this year's Heisman Trophy being named on Monday evening.

The following players will be in attendance for the presentation of the award in New York City, in alphabetical order:

Montee Ball, Wisconsin
Robert Griffin III
, Baylor
Andrew Luck, Stanford
Tyrann Mathieu, LSU
Trent Richardson
, Alabama

The iconic stiff-arm trophy will be presented to "the most outstanding player in collegiate football" on Saturday evening in the official ceremony hosted by the Heisman Trophy Trust.  The last time five players were finalists for the Heisman Trophy was 2009 when Mark Ingram, Toby Gerhart, Colt McCoy, Tim Tebow, and Ndamukong Suh all made the trip to New York.

Five players named Heisman Trophy finalists

Apparently a player who is about break an NCAA total TD record (with an asterisk along with Barry Sanders 44TD's) isn't enough to win the Heisman according to you media hacks. Pleased that Montee Ball was invited to New York, but he should also be coming home with the hardware. Did anyone ever think someone was going to approach Barry Sanders numbers...probably not...but here is Ball. Had Montee Ball not been pulled in the 4th quarter of 6 different games, he might have already passed the 44TD's...but Bielema reigned him in.

Montee Ball for Heisman.

I think Blackmon should be there as well.  As good as everybody says Richardson is, Ball had a better season.

I would contest the title of the article, that Luck and RG3 headline this list.  I think Montee Ball headlines the list.  The dude has a chance to break Barry Sander's TD record, which would be historic.  Yet, to this author and many others, he is cast as an afterthought.  I hope voters saw through the Luck hype machine.

Five players named Heisman Trophy finalists

There are a lot of great players in college football this year.  There are two players that got left off that I think deserves consideration. They are Brandon Weeden QB of Oklahoma State and Case Keenum QB of Houston.  Keenum had a great year.  I think he did not make the cut because his team lost to Southern Mississippi in the conference championship and lost out on a BCS game.  Weeden had a great game against Oklahoma in the final game of the season for both teams but did not make the cut.

The Wolverines would beat them Foot in mouth.  Michigan will be the national champ in two years if not next season!

LaMichael James isn't on the list?  He missed a few games with a dislocated elbow and still put up great numbers.  Barkley should be on the ballot (not RGIII) and Mathieu should be off too.  Luck's numbers against the top talent just weren't there either.  If Richardson played on Wisconsin, he would have better numbers than Monte Ball.  Ball played against some cupcakes for the first 4 games this season (10 of his 38 TD's).  Denard Robinson will win the Heisman next year (you heard it here first).

A BIG TEN team crushing LSU in the NC game? Did you forget that Wisconsin lost to Ohio State? I really hope you are joking.

There is a simple reason that Barkley was not invited to the Heisman ceremony.  He did not get enough votes to finish in the top 5.  It is not like the voting is starting today; it has already taken place.  The Heisman is a joke of an award anyway, so I don't think people should get all up in arms if your guy doesn't win.

Andrew Luck will win the Heisman...but the candidates are not complete without Matt Barkley.  I am not even a USC fan, but leaving this guy off the list of candidates is a slap in the face.   Mathieu is a great player, but there is not a chance that he should be included in the balloting.  This is all that Barkley did this season (69.1% completion percentage, 39TDs, 7 Int, 161.2 RTG, leading USC to a 10-2 record).  It shows that the NCAA is not quite finished with punishing USC or its players.
