Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne is in New York this week, and he's getting some work done while he's there as A&M looks to replace Mike Sherman. He's reportedly interviewed a number of different candidates this week and the latest candidate according to the Houston Chronicle is Air Force's Troy Calhoun.

According to the paper Calhoun had an interview with Byrne on Tuesday.

The report also says that Byrne has met with Kevin Sumlin, Larry Fedora -- who has since accepted the North Carolina job --Alabama's Kirby Smart along with Calhoun over the last two days. Sumlin is still believed to be the frontrunner for the job.

Calhoun has been at Air Force since 2007 and has had his name come up at numerous jobs the last few seasons, as he was even a candidate for the Denver Broncos job earlier this year, but he's yet to leave the service academy. He's 41-23 in his five seasons at Air Force, and has gone to a bowl game in every season.

Texas A&M is hoping to have its new coach by the end of the week, and the report says an announcement could come as soon as Wednesday.

Not an aggie fan, but get over your sour grapes Texas and Texas Tech fans.  Hell yes they left you guys for the SEC!!!!  There isn't a school that wouldn't have done it if they were in their shoes.

I don't really know many UT fans are exhibiting sour grapes.  The Ags have always concerned themselves with Longhorns more than the Longhorns do the Ags.  I'm certainly not lamenting anything about them leaving.  Have fun; so will we.  It's a great move for a lot of reasons but not for the ones that Ags care most about...winning on the football field and beating UT.  They will find little of the former and none of the latter.

I agree that Calhoun is a great coach. But I have to wonder if he'd have the same level of success at A&M. Tim DeRuyter has already had to dumb down much of his defensive scheme because the players are not as bright as those he coached at AFA. AFA gets a far different athlete than A&M does.

I don't understand A&M's fascination with coaches like Kevin Sumlin or Troy Calhoun.  Dennis Franchione and Mike Sherman were more proven coaches on the offensive side of the ball.  The Aggies struggles have been on defense.  Maybe it's time to go back to the days of the wrecking crew defense by hiring someone who's expertise is on the defensive side of the ball.  Kirby Smart would be an excellent choice.  Another good choice would be Tom Bradley, if Penn State decides not to retain him as Paterno's successor.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #000000; font-style: normal; background-color: #ffffff;">They are trolling because they are headed to the SEC and might want a coach who is familiar with their new dregs. Good riddance Aggies! Oh, and would you please consider naming Tommy Tuberville your coach and taking him with you?
Wow coming from a Tech fan.

Tory Calhoun is one hell of a football coach. I know Auburn had interest in him when we fired tuberville in 08. A&M should be thrilled to have him. His teams are extremely disciplined, well coached and always competitive. If you look what he's done at the AFA, I'm amazed he hasn't had more interest around the country. The man can coach! That being said, I seriously doubt he leaves colorado springs. Hes an academy guy and wants to continue to build the program to where it was under Fisher DeBerry.

Why is such a wealthy, proud university heading to the SEC trolling for B and C-listers?

WOW Aggies!  Do they really believe they cannot get a proven, top flight coach?  Why is such a wealthy, proud university heading to the SEC trolling for B and C-listers?
