UPDATE: June Jones is no longer believed to be a candidate for the Arizona State head coaching job.

"A source close to the football program said talks with June Jones to become the program's next coach have broken off and "he is out" as a candidate," wrote CBSSports.com's Craig Morgan. "It's unclear whether widespread fan opposition, Jones' buyout at SMU or another factor led to the breakdown in negotiations."

SMU's June Jones will follow Dennis Erickson as the next Arizona State football coach, according to a source close to the program.

CBSSports.com's Craig Morgan is reporting that Jones will be named the team's next head coach, with the official announcement likely this week. Jones has helped pull the Mustangs out of the shadow of the NCAA's "Death Penalty" in 1987, which crippled the program for almost two decades. After a 1-11 season in his first year at SMU, Jones has compiled a 22-17 record over the last three seasons and delivered three straight bowl appearances - their first postseason trips since the sanctions.

Jones' wide-open offensive style falls right in line with the recent Pac-12 hires of Mike Leach at Washington State and Rich Rodriguez to in-state rival Arizona. He has a history of reviving programs, and after the Sun Devils have arguably underachieved under Erickson he will be asked to take on a similar challenge. The move also comes at the same time as SMU's move to the Big East, which will be made official in a conference call late Wednesday afternoon.

June Jones no longer a candidate at Arizona State

Easy, Thunderdan, there's no need to insult the University of Phoenix. Guess who has the second largest library in the US, has more PhD theses published than ANY other school in the US, and whose faculty represent 750 of the Fortune 1000 companies? Not ASU, UOP!!

For real, why should ASU even delay firing the AD at this point? It seems like it is inevitable and that the lynch mob is out to get her. Today, she managed to not only give ASU a black eye, but also put SMU's football program and administration in a terrible position. Everybody in this situation got hosed including ASU, SMU, June Jones, SMU's players, etc. Everybody lost today because of the ASU athletic departments incompetence. People say they are only keeping her around so they can land a top notch football coach, well I say good luck now. Outisde of Penn State, ASU has now established itself as the biggest mess to walk into for a BCS caliber coach.

I guess you can her and you don't have an AD to get a coach. You keep her and nobody wants to go coach there. Quite a catch 22 but frankly, after what you did to SMU I could care less.

My guess is SMU and June find a way to part ways and save some face. He clearly wants to be gone so why would SMU want him around? You can
t put the toothpaste back in the tube at this point. I predict it is just a matter of hammering out the details of getting rid of him. He is owed $3million a year for the next 3 years.

Classy.
Kind of like your post Thunderdan...

What you fail to mention is that June Jones is NOT committed to the SMU program.  The truth is that he's the one who tried to leave.  ASU may not have handled it in the best way, but there has to be something more to the story than just pressure from the fan base.  And if the fans were unhappy they have the right to voice their opinions.  They have no reason to worry about SMU.  If the buyout from his SMU contract is the issue, then that's kind of Jones' fault for going after another job that couldn't/wouldn't pay that much to get him.

Easy there Thunder, you're about to bust a vein. I am an ASU alum and still live in the area - the fan base really wants the AD, Lisa Love, to be fired but at the same time they want a coach that has a wow factor. The program is a mid-leve D1 program at best so personally I would have welcomed Jones and given him a fair shot. The way this search has been handled is with little class, you're right about that but believe me the locals here know it too. IF and that's a big IF Jones had told his players that he was leaving then Lisa Love should be fired immediately for embarrasing ASU and its fan base. She's such a mess.

IMO Thunderdan gave some pretty good reasons for being so pissed.

Go to hell ASU. I mean, I know you only have to be slightly more intelligent than a field mouse to get into ASU, but I would have expected that their administrators would be slightly brighter, which they apparently aren't. So you offer June Jones the job, he accepts, he then tells his staff/team/recruits, and then you decide to pull the offer off the table. Classy. As an SMU fan, I want to thank you for completely screwing up our football program by your lack of integrity. Classy. So what are SMU/June supposed to do now? Just pretend it never happened and go about life as normal? June can tell his recruits that he is committed to the SMU program? Once again, go to hell.

I hope every ASU sports team blows for the next 100 years and that their alumni realize that the rest of the world really does not differentiate between ASU and the University of Phoenix.
