Tragic news out of Corvallis Wednesday night as Oregon State freshman defensive tackle Fred Thompson has died of an apparent heart attack.

The school confirmed the death of Thompson, who was to turn 20 on Sunday, with a release. According to officials, Thompson was playing basketball at the Dixon Recreation Center on campus when he collapsed.  He was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis where he was later pronounced dead.

A 6-foot-4, 317-pound defensive tackle for the Beavers, Thompson had just enrolled for the winter semester and was expected to compete for a spot in the rotation in 2012 after redshirting. He is from Richmond, Calif. and played his prep ball at Oakland Tech High School.

Head coach Mike Riley was on the road recruiting when he first heard of the news and is making his way back to town. The school will hold a press conference to discuss the event on Thursday.

According to the Oregonian, news of Thompson's death has already produced reaction on Twitter from several of his teammates and the rest of the Oregon State community.

"Everybody on the team loved him," teammate Kyle Gardner told the Corvallis Gazette Times. "He was just one of those guys that was always just smiling and joking around with you. It's sad. We just don't know what to think. I just think everyone is in shock."

Millpounder and others need to develop a heart first, not assume they know anything about this case and just take a  "Oh, well, he had it coming" kind of attitude.
Stick it up your a$$.  I care about this kid, unlike what you sound like.I think this kid needed some help, not just another suck up.  I hope his family finds some peace. I don't think I could if my son died.  That's why it's important to educate people, SO IT DOESN'T HAPPEN ANY MORE THAN IT HAS TO

You guys are all idiots.  I feel really bad for this kid and his family.  The point is, all the suck up well wisher hanger on jackasses that smile at the poor kids weight issue are at fault.  My guess is that you guys would be so enamored by a big time athlete that it would never cross your minds to actually care about the kid's health.  You guys are the heartless selfish bastards.  We need to eduacate and help these kids, not allow it.  Give a drink to an alcoholic, too.  The person matters, and all you guys care about is that he's an athlete.  That sucks.  You should all be ashamed

ok first and foremost when your 6'4'' your average weight for someone that doesn't have any muscle mass is around 195-200 lbs but when you workout and lift weights on a semi daily routine you gain alot of weight not from fat but from muscles, muscle weights more than fat, so 5 pounds of fat is 7-8 lbs of muscle and besides look at the dudes face does he look overweight, he looks well conditionedbesides a college team like oregon state would not even take a look at you if you werent in shape. thats all i got to say :)

your ignorance and arrogance are apparently your two biggest character traits.
too bad they arent positive.
heres hoping noone in your family is ever in the same situation.
and proportionally, weight lifters are heavier. muscle mass is denser than fat ie
for your smallish brain that would mean you can fit more muscle in the same area
pound for pound.
and still many of us wish you and your family a merry christmas.

Oregon St. freshman dies of apparent heart attack

What a major bummer to see another young, successful kid who was trying to make something of his pass on like.  This seems to be happening far too frequently.  Very tragic.  Very sad.  Condolences to his family and friends.

R.I.P.
