Illinois has hired Toledo's Tim Beckman to replace Ron Zook as head football coach, according to the Associated Press.

An AP source at the the University of Toledo confirmed that Beckman told his players on Friday that he has accepted the recently-vacated Illini job. Zook was fired after Illinois's 6-0 start finished with a six-game losing streak and berth to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl against UCLA.

Toledo was Beckman's first stop as a head coach after serving as an assistant at Bowling Green, Ohio State, and Oklahoma State - where he was defensive coordinator from 2007-2008. In three seasons with the Rockets Beckman has compiled a 21-16 record and two straight bowl bids. Toledo (8-4) is slated to play Air Force in the Military Bowl, Beckman is not expected to coach that game.

Illinois is reportedly expected to hold a press conference this afternoon to introduce Beckman as the new head football coach.

what most of you poster's don't know is that Beckman inherited a program that had deteriorated prior to his hire.  He turned the program around and UT is now winning again and fun to watch.  Beckman is a winner and he will be successful in Ill over time.

Why??  That makes no sense.  ZERO.   Ever been to South Bend, IN?   What's there beside Notre Dame?   Ever been to Iowa City?  What's ther beside Univ of Iowa?  Illinois is a GREAT public university!  One of the BEST in the entire NATION.  I thought football players got recruited to PLAY FOOTBALL and attend CLASSES.  Not go to night clubs or tattoo parlors in Columbus.   Wake UP!~!

Just by showing up, he's better than Zook. Did Ron ever show up to coach? He was a great recruiter, but coaching-wise he was Ty Willingham.

Now 21-16 in the MAC conference is hardly something special. I mean only the Sun Belt conference is worse. It's hardly a coup, but it's an upgrade nonetheless.

bmc...Jim Tressel won how many National Championships at Youngstown??  He was a proven winner...Beckman is not a proven winner....Urban Meyer proven winner, Bo Shembeckler proven winner at Miami of Ohio...Beckman 8-5.....Not proven nor proven he can recruit outside of the midwest...

This will turn out to be the worst hire/fire in Illinois history...Ron Zook with the Illini 3 bowl games...Illini without Ron Zook 14 bowl games since 1947...Time Beckman can not recruit Florida or Texas...He can keep ohio open, however, Zook already had Ohio, Florida, and Texas....Illinois will be sub 500 Until Beckman and Mike Thomas are fired...Mike Thomas has made a Colossal Mistake and the Illini Nation drank his Kool-Aid...Horrible, Horrible, Horrible...

This might be a good hire, but could be another in a long line if Illini mistakes.  I am banking on the latter.  Illinois hasn't been relevant since the 1980's.  Even Zook's one good year couldn't make Illinois relevant again, nor could it make them a destination school for elite recruits.  Until Illinois starts beating the schools at the top of the conference in recruiting, they won't beat them on the field very often, and they definitely won't beat them in the standings.

DID YOU REALLY JUST SAY Bo Schembecler or Jim Tressel,  WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH YOU?!?!  I WANT THE ILLINI TO DO WELL BUT IF YOU EXPECT THEM TO BE BETTER THAN A MIDDLE OF THE PACK TEAM IN THE CONFERENCE YOUR CRAZY. UNTIL CHAMPAIGN IS MORE APPEALING TO THE STUDENT THEY WILL CONTINUE TO GO TO OHIO ST,MICH, MICH ST AND NEB. NO MATTER WHO THE COACH IS

I agree with you guys. Illinois wasn't in a position to get a "sexy" pick, but I think Beckman is better. For one, he's proven to get the most out of his talent. I watched Toledo a few times this season and they played some good football. He knew the talent that he had and how to use them. He's also been recruiting in the Midwest so he will be able to continue to build existing relationships and expand on that experience. I think the offensive style that he likes to run is something the Illini fans like and will be fun to watch in the Big 10. Wishing him much luck - but not too much!

Beckman is smart to make this move because he has a chance to have success immediately since the cupboard is full of talent.  Ron Zook may not be the worlds greatest head coach but he is one hell of a recruiter, just ask Urban Meyer about what was waiting in the talent pool when he hit Gainesville.  Someone will be very wise to hire Ron Zook at a very respectable salary as an Associate Head Coach and recruiting coordinator, they'll win for a long time and keep their job.

It may not be a sexy pick but it's got teeth. He may not be a big name but neither was Bo Schembecler or Jim Tressel when they were hired. Bo was a coach at Miami Univ. and Tressel at Youngstown St...not household names at the time, but did great things. Well, Jim did until last year at least:-) Anyway,  I think it's a good pick for Illinois.
