Illinois has hired Toledo's Tim Beckman to replace Ron Zook as head football coach, according to the Associated Press.

An AP source at the the University of Toledo confirmed that Beckman told his players on Friday that he has accepted the recently-vacated Illini job. Zook was fired after Illinois's 6-0 start finished with a six-game losing streak and berth to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl against UCLA.

Toledo was Beckman's first stop as a head coach after serving as an assistant at Bowling Green, Ohio State, and Oklahoma State - where he was defensive coordinator from 2007-2008. In three seasons with the Rockets Beckman has compiled a 21-16 record and two straight bowl bids. Toledo (8-4) is slated to play Air Force in the Military Bowl, Beckman is not expected to coach that game.

Illinois is reportedly expected to hold a press conference this afternoon to introduce Beckman as the new head football coach.

Illini fans, wake up.  Beckman will recruit as good as 'the Zooker.  And he may just be able to coach the team up better than what you have experienced the past few years.  have faith my fellow B1G brethren..  Better times are ahead...

You really  think he didn't recruit Big 10 quality kids when he was coaching in THE BIG 10?  Really?  Or how about when he recruited at OK State.  Think he didn't recruit Big 12 quality players there?  Why don't you at least give the guy a chance?

21-16 in three years I wouldn't call that a success. Good luck Illinois.

if Beckman can match Pinkel's success at misery, then this will be a good hire.  as for the ignorant cheap shots about hiring MAC coaches, maybe study a bit of history to figure out where Bo Schembechler, Woody Hayes, Ara Parseghian, Urban Meyer, Jim Grobe came from.

Hmm look where he has been assistant coach at. And who for ( Tressel and Myers) not bad coaches to learn from. And you got to start somewhere and he succeeded. Good hire Illini. I can't wait for next season now.

Actually, he has

In his past two classes he's pulled a few 4 star recruits to Toledo over Big Ten teams.  He can recruit, he just can't get a defense going...

I don't know that this is the problem.  Zook recruited better than anyone in the Big Ten except Ohio State.  If you don't believe me look up their recent class ranks and their recent NFL draftees.  What I think Illinois needs is a quality coach, the talent is there now and hopefully he can keep em coming - but more importantly win games with the kids.
