Illinois has hired Toledo's Tim Beckman to replace Ron Zook as head football coach, according to the Associated Press.

An AP source at the the University of Toledo confirmed that Beckman told his players on Friday that he has accepted the recently-vacated Illini job. Zook was fired after Illinois's 6-0 start finished with a six-game losing streak and berth to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl against UCLA.

Toledo was Beckman's first stop as a head coach after serving as an assistant at Bowling Green, Ohio State, and Oklahoma State - where he was defensive coordinator from 2007-2008. In three seasons with the Rockets Beckman has compiled a 21-16 record and two straight bowl bids. Toledo (8-4) is slated to play Air Force in the Military Bowl, Beckman is not expected to coach that game.

Illinois is reportedly expected to hold a press conference this afternoon to introduce Beckman as the new head football coach.

Toledo's Tim Beckman headed to Illinois

REALLY?

A mid-major / MAC coach is the best qualified, most likely to get the FIGHTING ILLINI back where they belong, in a BCS / national title bowl?  You've got to be FREAKING KIDDING ME?

What recruiting experience does he have?  He's been able to recruit players not good enough for the Big 10 to play football in the armpit of OHIO, has he even talked to a possible BIG 10 recruit before?

I'll give him the same shot I gave Zook, about 4 years.  Then we'll be calling for his head, or I'll be eating my words as I sit at the 50 yard line in Pasadena.

Report: Toledo's Tim Beckman headed to Illinois

Glad Illinios found someone who wanted the job, but if he can't recruit it will be more of the same.

Report: Toledo's Tim Beckman headed to Illinois

Nice to see Coach Beckman get an opportunity in the Big 10.  Like our  Coach Pinkel, he has worked his way up through the system and lead Toledo to the reent success they have had.  I just hope he has the assistants to help recruit in a tough conference.  Illinois fans are some of the best I grew up with as long as they see hope and progress.  Coach Zook has a recruiter but not so much a developer of talent.  Coach Beckman will develop and coach them up to be competitive.
