In the wake of Charlie Weis's stunning departure for Kansas, Florida head coach Will Muschamp vowed that he would hire " the best offensive coordinator in the country." We're not sure the first name to bubble up as a serious candidate quite fits that bill.

From the Twitter feed of Gainesville Sun reporter Robbie Andrieu:

As a coach who's spent his entire career in the NFL with the exception of his largely ill-fated tenure in charge at Alabama, Shula certainly fits Muschamp's bill as a coordinator with pro experience who'd run a pro-style system in Gainesville. And he might quietly become a solid recruiter for the Gators as well; despite his struggles in Tuscaloosa, many of the players he brought to the Tide formed the foundation of the 26-2 2008 and 2009 teams, and he very nearly landed a Florida product you may have heard of named Tim Tebow.

But that's just about where the good news ends. Shula has only spent four seasons of his career as an offensive coordinator, all of them at the pro level with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; in those four seasons, the Bucs landed in the league's bottom three three times and were never better than 22nd.

He didn't appear to do much for the Tide's offense during his Alabama stint, either. His four years there never produced an offense that ranked in the top half of the FBS, and the Tide's average rank in total offense during his tenure was a mediocre 76th.

Currently, Shula is serving as the Carolina Panthers quarterbacks coach after holding the same position for the Jacksonville Jaguars the past three seasons. Cam Newton is having a nice season under his tutelage, but is that reason enough for Muschamp to bite? Is his prior resume? We're not seeing it, which is why if we were a Gator fan, we'd be hoping Muschamp eventually wound up targeting some other candidate.

Report: Muschamp "targeting" Mike Shula for OC

Hey Bama75201! That woman that Price ended up with was a dancer; not a hooker. So the floozy ran up a large room tab? No reason to dismiss the poor guy. Besides, did you ever see the photo of his date that fateful night? She looked like a cross between Phyllis Diller and Joe Namath. That should have been punishment enough! To top it all off; Price is sentenced to coach @ UTEP where he is not allowed to cross the river to Juarez.

Shula? REALLY? c'mon. If you're going to make another goofy choice for OC, why not leave the position vacant? No coordinator is better than an awful one, like Wiess was or Shula would be.

People need to remember that Shula's main problems at Alabama were with the defense that got pushed around.  Florida's main problems this past season were with the offensive line which couldn't get out of its own way, much less block for Demps and Rainey.  My hope is that Muschamp is able to bring in someone who will recruit offensive linemen who are strong, quick, and with good stamina.  It's a bit late for Demps and Rainey, but next season is as close as spring practice.

Shula recruited the basis for Alabama's National Championship? Well that's news to us because it was Saban who recruited Mark Ingram, Marcel Dareus, Julio Jones, Courtney Upshaw, Dre Kirkpatrick, Trent Richardson, Vlachos, Rolondo McClain, Marquis Maze, Josh Chapman, Mark Barron, and Dont'a Hightower, Shula did bring in Greg McElroy, Andre Smith, and Javier Arenas. But the National Championship team was 85% Saban recruits. Shula did step in when Mike Price got caught with a hooker. But his problem was motivating the players and being the head coach - not their buddy.

I'm not Gators fan but jeez is Muschamp TRYING to get fired in Gainesville?
Mike Shula? Let's all remember how TERRIBLE his 'Bama teams were and how inept they were on offense.
This is not going to end well... not in the least!

Hey Muschump. Don't you wish you stayed in Austin bro? Who's next as your defensive coach? Buddy Ryan? Maybe John Robinson needs a gig! My man; you are hopelessly outclassed in the SEC and Gator Nation is already passing the hat to get you out of Gainsville. Keep your chin up though, maybe Charlie Weis could get you a special teams job in Kansas if he lasts 2 years.

As a Bama fan, I hope Shula gets the UF job and I hope he does well. Im thankful for what Coach Shula did by taking over a reeling program and holding it steady through the toughest period for UA in half a century. Roll Tide, Coach Shula, and if you take the job, go Gators!

Make the call Muschamp.  The rest of the SEC will thank you many times over.
