Former Southern Methodist tailback Craig James will file for a spot in the Republican primary for the United States Senate in Texas, according to Gromer Jeffers of the Dallas Morning News.

His son Adam James is currently a wide receiver for Tommy Tuberville at Texas Tech.

James was one half of the famed "Pony Express" at SMU, joining fellow top RB recruit Eric Dickerson in the Mustang backfield and leading SMU to a combined 29-5-1 record from 1980-1982. In James' final game as a Mustang, SMU beat Pittsburgh 7-3 in the Cotton Bowl to preserve an unbeaten 11-0-1 record.

After graduating from SMU, James played for two seasons in the doomed USFL with the Washington Generals before spending five seasons with the New England Patriots, rushing for 2,469 career yards and 11 career touchdowns and making the 1986 Pro Bowl.

James retired from the Patriots after the 1988 season.

He either played for the Washington Federals or the New Jersey Generals.  The Washington Generals play basketball and always lose to the Harlem Globetrotters.

Report: Craig James to run for U.S. Senate

OH. MY. GOD. If this guy even sniffs a seat in Congress, I will really start to worry about the future of the country (as if I'm not worried enough already). I hope he gets killed, I hope he loses in a landslide, talk about the most arrogant, self-righteous man in the history of sports. What are his qualifications anyway? People of Texas, I am counting on you here, DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN.

This is great news and a great fit, we know the guy is a rip off artist but the good part about this we will not have to listen to all his crap on espn. It's some great news I hope the people of Texas are smarter than this than to vote for this crook.

Report: Craig James to run for U.S. Senate

I thought I was the only one who thought Craig James' perspective on sports and analysis of situations, teams, players, coaches was off.  What relief to realize that I was not alone.  Although poor Texas, Rick Perry as Governor, congressional districts requiring federal intervention... do they really need to send a person of James' qualities to assist in setting our national standards?

Craig James is an a**hole!  Congress is a perfect fit for him!  I am for it if it stops him from broadcasting football games.  I am sick of seeing his whiny lying arse!

Report: Craig James to run for U.S. Senate

James is fully qualified to run for Senate.  He has already shown that he is very good at abusing his power to further his own personal aganda.  James managed to get both Mike Leach and Bruce Feldman fired from their jobs with their employers doing everything they could to damage their reputations.  Luckily, Bruce is now "free" and "The Pirate" has another ship to sail.

Another skill that politicians find helpful is the ability to lie with a straight face and make people believe it.  James is so good at lyinig that he actually made some people believe that he was the only high-profile recruit who didn't take money from SMU boosters during their scandal.
Let's run down the list of qualifications and see if James has them.  Back room deals?  Check.  Good ol' boy politics?  Check.  Using half-truths to further an agenda?  Check.  Stonewalling?  Check.
Ultimately, anyone who can keep a job like the one James has at ESPN when he has no talent, no professional ethics, and no charisma has to be extremely adept at the under-handed tactics that politicians routinely apply to both their professional and personal lives.
Really, James has come a long way in life.  He started out as just another high-profile recruit taking money from boosters.  He parlayed his skills on the field into a decent career.  He somehow managed to get hired at ESPN and has been able to keep his job despite his rather obvious shortcomings.  He has grown into the consummate helicopter parent and enabler.
Craig James needs to be a Senator.  Why?  Because the next time his spoiled son gets in trouble, it will probably be with the legal system.  It will take a lot more than a second-rate talking head to "take care of things" for him the next time around.
Craig James for Senator.  Could it really be any other way?

Report: Craig James to run for U.S. Senate

Craig James and Congress are a perfect fit together. Think about this, what a great marriage this really is for both him and Congress. First off James was a part of the biggest football scandal ever. SMU where he played at is the only one to ever receive the NCAA's death penalty. We all know he could be bribed and bought if the dollars are right. To boot he has never been a big enough man, to admit what he did at SMU and how much he was paid to play. So being a Congressman fits him to a tee. He can take money under the table from lobbyist, just like he did at SMU from boosters. He can lie about what happens, cheat and steal from people knowing that there will be no repercussion. He can make up stories to cover up his short comings, just like he did with his son at Texas Tech, who should have never be a D-1 player in the first place. So as you can see Craig James will make a great Congressman with his stellar background.
