Pitt releases statement on Todd Graham

On Wednesday the college football world was caught off-guard when it was announced that Pitt head coach Todd Graham was leaving the school to take the same position at Arizona State. The news came as a surprise since Graham just took the job at Pitt this season and his name hadn't been mentioned as a candidate.

As you'd expect, Pitt isn't exactly thrilled with the way things went down, and didn't try and hide that in the statement the school released.

“Obviously this is not the way we would have expected Mr. Graham to handle any possible departure,” Pitt executive vice chancellor and general counsel Jerry Cochran said in the statement. “Beyond normal expectations with respect to professional conduct, he has failed to comply with the terms of his contract.”

Yes, the idea of Pitt complaining about Graham not complying with the terms of his contract considering all that's gone on with Pitt and the Big East the last few months is a bit laughable.

The statement also says that Graham asked for permission to speak to another institution on Tuesday night and was denied permission by the school. He then resigned from his position and was named the head coach at Arizona State on Wednesday.

Graham says that it was personal, not professional reasons for the change. He went the Randy Edsall route and called Arizona State his "dream job" and talked about having family in the area on Wednesday.

Though there are also reports that Graham sent "feelers" out to both Kansas and Texas A&M about their job openings recently as well. Whether Graham has many different dreams or just has family all over the country, I don't know. All we really know is that he'll now be starting his fourth head coaching job since 2006 when he took the job at Rice and left for Tulsa after a season.

Pitt releases statement on Todd Graham

What a stupid, ignorant, meathead decision this was! June Jones was the only guy ASU could have hired that would stand a chance against Leach, Rich Rod, Mora Jr, Kiffen and others but who do they go after? This POS from Pitt...I dont understand how he even plans on getting ASU players to play for him. He will be gone in a year and noone is going to go to a school like ASU not even knowing who the next coach will be. One thing is for sure it will be a diffrent coach than the one recruiting them! Im 30 years old and love college football more than anything but im not sure id go to ASU on a full scholarship if this prick is asking! I like ASU too but boy did they screw up here. Goodluck to ASU its just gonna be something watching WSU beat ASU by 30!

Pitt releases statement on Todd Graham

I'm glad to see WVU get the invitation to their new conference, but for you WVU "blowhards" there is a right way and wrong way to leave the BIG EAST, and you chose the latter. Again, you guys need to practice what you preach before you jump on PITT and SYRACUSE, because they did it right.
Whoa, pump the brakes there Buford.  You may want to recall that Pitt's chancellor was the head of the committee that turned down ESPN's new TV contract just before Pitt left the Big East without any notice.  WVU's hand was forced from that point on, so climb down off of your moral high horse, nobody is acting with much dignity these days when it comes to collegiate sports.

Pitt releases statement on Todd Graham

From the article posted by Tom Fornelli, it's seems like coach Graham asked for permission and was denied then he resigned sort of like Pitt was trapping him into staying there. Obviously Pitt didn't do there homwork if they knew he did this to Rice after one year. another reason why coaches contracts should be year to year since it's not possible to be iron clad.  This goes to show you need to put him in the same class as Bobby Petrino and Nick Saban as unreliable coaches who will bolt in a second.  On the other hand Pitt and there departure from the Big East where you have a decent chance to go to a BCS bowl to the ACC where he will have next to no chance making a BCS bowl and lose the recruiting wars for that territory as well.  If this is indeed family related I don't blame him for a second I would do that too, but I hope Arizona St asked him about all this before they game him the job. You could put this under buyer beware.

Pitt releases statement on Todd Graham

Let's explore what must have been a well thought out and researched statemeny. Little Pitt as you call it has been in existane since 1787. Arizona State, 1885. So, Pitt is on;y about 100 years older than ASU. Academically Pitt is ranked 37th in the nation compared to 132nd for ASU, again about a 100 difference. Pitt has 9 national football champioships. ASU has 0. I don't even like Pitt. I am a WVU fan. So, I'm not really sure where your opinion of Pitt comes from.

Pitt releases statement on Todd Graham

This POS has almost burned his bridges in every major conference.....I would say he is quickly running out of desperate institutions that will give him any more chances.

Pitt releases statement on Todd Graham

You need to learn your history Pitt stayed in the Big East even when Miami, Boston college and Virginia Tech left if you ask me that is commitment. Seems to me your just a HATER OF PITTSBURGH

Pitt releases statement on Todd Graham

With all due respect to PITT, they are leaving the BIG EAST by the rules and by-laws, giving 27 months notice and paying the $5 million
buyout fee, which is admirable compared to the horrendous way WVU wants to leave the BIG EAST.  That's why the ACC is an outstanding conference; because of their elite institutions.  Oliver Luck, WVU's AD worked to insure PITT and Syracuse stayed the 27 months, then when WVU had the chance to jump to the BIG WHATEVER, he sued the BIG EAST to get WVU out of the conference in 9 months to compete in 2012. With regards to Graham, PITT will be much better off down the road without this guy !!

Pitt releases statement on Todd Graham

It is not often you make a mistake and only have to live with it for one year.  Thank you Todd Graham for leaving as your offensive scheme is horrendous at best.

Pitt releases statement on Todd Graham

Every school does this by getting a coach any way possibly. Yes it's not fair that Todd Graham is leaving after just one year but that's life in college sports so don't blame Arizona State or Graham for leaving little Pitt. This is what happened to Tennessee & Lane Kiffin when he left a wasteland called Tennessee to a much better place called USC & Graham did the same thing when he left a wasteland to called Pitt for a much better place like ASU. To Pitt & their fans who are crying that Graham is a snake for leaving & ASU for being assholes for taking him away should only look to their sorry selfs for letting him go without doing nothing. I wonder if the ACC really wants little Pitt now. Great pickup ASU by getting Graham from little unknown Pitt.

Pitt releases statement on Todd Graham

Leaving after one year isn't what makes Graham an a-hole, just as leaving the Big East for the ACC doesn't make Pitt a snake oil institution.  Haven't you all been paying attention?   This is the way of the college athletics world.  Schools EVERYWHERE are jumping to other conferences and coaches EVERYWHERE are dishonoring contracts in favor of their own needs and egos.  Stop acting like Pitt is the only place this has happened.   It's the only place it has happened TODAY.

No, what makes Graham a scumbag is what some others have pointed out:  he ran his QB under the bus a million times this season and took NO responsibility for 5 blown second-half leads.  He TOTALLY made the program about himself...THE FREAKING SYSTEM-- and then he left without having a face-to-face meeting with his players.   The man defines scum.  But it's not because he left.  They are all doing that.
