UPDATE: LaMichael James has since denied the Oregonian report that he would be entering the NFL draft.

James could have gone pro last season but instead decided to return to improve his draft stock, and did so by adding 15 pounds and returning punts.

Depending on who else will be declaring for the NFL draft, James is currently fifth in the CBSSports.com NFL draft rankings at running back.

Though he still has a game left in his career at the Rose Bowl against Wisconsin, James is already Oregon's all-time leading rusher with 4,923 yards and also has scored more rushing touchdowns than any other back in school history with 52.

James turning pro would be a big loss for Oregon but it's not as if the Ducks are hurting at the running back position. Kenjon Barner rushed for 909 yards and 11 touchdowns this season, and he's expected to return for his senior year. Then there's DeAnthony Thomas, who had 1,011 total yards and 14 touchdowns in his first season while being named the co-Freshman of the Year in the Pac-12.

Guys his size do not last long in the NFL. This conversation happens every year. There is always a place fo guy's like him. Returning punts and certain situations, but they just arn't big enough to take the NFL pounding. And running backs are a dime a dozen in the NFL.. The small guys are better off learning to be receivers. They can last longer.

Report: LaMichael James is going pro

LMJ is just underrated because pundits think it's just the system. While it MAY be true, Oregon's running backs during the Chip Kelly/Oregon-spread-offense era have done quite well in the NFL. LeGarrette Blount has been tearing it up the past two seasons, Jonathan Stewart has had a good career to this point and Jeremiah Johnson is seeing touches in the NFL despite a catastrophic knee injury late in his college career.

Point is, every team has a "system". It takes the right fit of talented back to run it. Talent is talent and LMJ, the most talented of those other three, has all the tools to be a great back in the NFL. Mid-second round for him would be an absolute STEAL.

How is he possibly 5th on the RB list?  I can see Richardson and maybe Montee Ball taken before him, but I'm having trouble seeing where the better talent lies.  Have you seen the cuts he makes?  Have you seen his vision?  Have you seen how hard he is to take down?  Oregon RB's succeed in the NFL.  He will be a steal if he enters the draft this year.

I think that would be a great team for him to go to. You make a really good point. He was good these past years in the right system which i think is key. If he was at an SEC or Big 10 school that pounds runners up the middle i dont think he would have had the same success which is why Denver makes sense to me.

If he goes, that's great -- good for him on the next level!... The Ducks will survive with or without him, especially if they are on probation next year...  He's a very talented individual, so there should be plenty of opportunities at the next level!

Love to watch him play...but not sure he's ready to carry the load in NFL. Even though they are trying to get the defenses to play "Touch" it's still a little tougher up there...and certainly rougher on the smaller, speedy guys. I think he fits in somewhere where he can be a 3rd down back who is not asked to pound it between the tackles on the early downs.
