There's a lot to blame Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson for where the discombobulated state of his football program is concerned. But at least it sounds like he's got a plan in the wake of Todd Graham's stunning departure.

And according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the first name mentioned as part of that plan is Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads. The Post-Gazette reported Friday that Rhoads "appears to be the most coveted of the group [of potential candidates] as ... Pederson and chancellor Mark Nordenberg like and respect him and think he is an excellent football coach."

A former Panther defensive coordinator under Dave Wannstedt who spent eight seasons on the Pitt staff, Rhoads declined to speak to Pederson following Wannstedt's firing in 2010 out of loyalty to the Cyclones. But "according to two people close to Rhoads" who spoke to the Post-Gaztte, this time around Rhoads would be willing to sit down with Pitt and "likely will talk with the administration" regarding the opening.

UPDATE, 12:45 ET: Actually, you can probably forget the Rhoads talk; ISU announced Friday that Rhoads had signed a 10-year contract extension with the school.

With Rhoads presumably off the table, the focus will turn towards who the Post-Gazette reports is also on the Panthers' potential list of candidates: Ohio State assistant/2010 head coach Luke Fickell, Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops, Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst, Northern Illinois head coach Dave Doeren and former Illinois and Florida head coach Ron Zook. Pederson reportedly feels strongly enough in that pool of candidates that the school is forgoing the use of a search committee.

Fickell has reportedly already interviewed, with Chryst due to interview this Saturday. Given the upheaval around him in Columbus, Fickell may be the leading candidate until further notice.

Ron Zook a candidate for this job?  Send Dennis Dodd, Zook's biggest fan, to interview for him.  But don't ask for a job recommendation from Steve Spurrier.

Pitt would fit for Rhoads, much better than PSU, the home of diseased cow treatment, oh, yeah and pedophiles.

Paul Rhoads.

Is it better to be the doormat of a football conference, or a contender in a non-football conference?  I honestly don't know, but the way Rhoads is helping ISU win, I think he could do better than Pitt.

Add my vote to the Clements nomination.  Pitt should shy away from the likes of Zook and other retread types.  Also, they should take great care not to hire somebody looking for a great stepping stone job such as the scumbag Flim Flam Graham.

Clements is supposed to be on PSU's shopping list but he should be smarter then to accept an offer from that train wreck university.

Meanwhile, Clements is well thought of in Green Bay and both Rogers and Favre say he is a top shelf talent...that's good enough for me.

Really?  Lateral move????  Smokin' much weed lately??  Busy gettin' a few tattoos??  There is no way becoming the head coach at Pitt is a lateral move.  I'm not even a Pitt fan but they are a decent program and becoming a head coach damn near anywhere is better than being a defensive coordinator anywhere . . . . even at YOUR prestigious Ohio State which isn't too prestigious lately.  FAILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL.

;
Going from D. Coord at OSU to HC at Pitt is a lateral move at best.

I think Rich Rod taking most of Graham's assistants may have played a roll in his departure more than anything else.  Somewhere Dave Wannstedt has to be chuckling to himself.

Go Steelers, I had also felt Zook got a raw deal at Florida.  However, living in Illinois, it has been deja vu.  The moniker on Zook is correct. He can recruit, but he can't coach.  Illinois puts a ton of HS players in Division I and Zook got his share.  He just couldn't put a quality team on the field.  Wannstedt actually recruited pretty well at Pitt, but similar to Zook could not get the results on the field.  Those two guys are both good recruiters, and good coordinators, but not good HCs.

Is Tom Bradley a possibility or is he considered radioactive?
