There's a lot to blame Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson for where the discombobulated state of his football program is concerned. But at least it sounds like he's got a plan in the wake of Todd Graham's stunning departure.

And according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the first name mentioned as part of that plan is Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads. The Post-Gazette reported Friday that Rhoads "appears to be the most coveted of the group [of potential candidates] as ... Pederson and chancellor Mark Nordenberg like and respect him and think he is an excellent football coach."

A former Panther defensive coordinator under Dave Wannstedt who spent eight seasons on the Pitt staff, Rhoads declined to speak to Pederson following Wannstedt's firing in 2010 out of loyalty to the Cyclones. But "according to two people close to Rhoads" who spoke to the Post-Gaztte, this time around Rhoads would be willing to sit down with Pitt and "likely will talk with the administration" regarding the opening.

UPDATE, 12:45 ET: Actually, you can probably forget the Rhoads talk; ISU announced Friday that Rhoads had signed a 10-year contract extension with the school.

With Rhoads presumably off the table, the focus will turn towards who the Post-Gazette reports is also on the Panthers' potential list of candidates: Ohio State assistant/2010 head coach Luke Fickell, Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops, Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst, Northern Illinois head coach Dave Doeren and former Illinois and Florida head coach Ron Zook. Pederson reportedly feels strongly enough in that pool of candidates that the school is forgoing the use of a search committee.

Fickell has reportedly already interviewed, with Chryst due to interview this Saturday. Given the upheaval around him in Columbus, Fickell may be the leading candidate until further notice.

Those are all better candidates than Graham was. I wouldn't mind Zook at all, I always thought he got a raw deal in Florida.

I think another problem area at PITT may be the AD Steve Pederson himself.  Mr. Pederson doesn't really possess that good of a record when it comes to hiring and firing of coaches.  His stop as Nebraska's AD turned out to be a flop when he fired Frank Solich and hired Callahan as coach, which many feel set the Husker's program back at least 5 yrs. This is the second time Mr. Pederson has been PITT's AD, and from what I hear, many of the PITT supporters and fans have lost confidence in him.

You nailed it! But we never had any confidence in him - he's a joke. We figure he must be have some incriminating evidence on someone at Pitt. Kind of hoping he'd go to a school that makes sense for someone like him. Ohio State or Penn State would be a perfect fit for a man of his character.

Really CBS, since when do contracts in college football mean anything?  HAHAHA  ;)
Contracts mean a lot of money when a school has to buy out 10 years instead of 3 or 4.

As a Buckeye fan, I don't think Fickell is there yet and would be foolish to take the job over working under Urban Meyer for a few years before jumping.  Going from D. Coord at OSU to HC at Pitt is a lateral move at best.  However, the way he was handled this past year at OSU, I can't blame him for wanting to get away.  And from what I've read, Meyer has him tabbed as co-D Coord this coming year.

And Tressel talk is foolish.  He won't go to Pitt.  He is wise to steer clear of college football for longer than one year.  And when he comes back he should be as far from the midwest as possible, not 160 miles east.

Mark Stoops and Paul Chryst would both be bold hires but we might be in the same situation in a year or two. Both of these guys will be Head coaches real soon. I'm hoping for Stoops from the names listed above. Going into the ACC it wouldn't hurt taking a ACC coach. This guy has recruited Florida, He's from Ohio, and Pennsylvania is Pittsburgh's to have with everything going on at Penn State.

If you can't go to college, go to Pitt!  Pederson is the only AD in America that still makes Penn State look good in comparison.

I will walk to Oakland just to smack Pederson if he hires Zook. If Panther fans thought Wanny was bad, Zook will be even worse and he isn't anywhere near the Pitt guy Wanny is.

RE: Pitt Head Coach candidates

What about Green Bay Packers QB coach, and western PA native, Tom Clements?  Since Clements is someone who grew up in the greater Pittsburgh area, I would think that he would be just as interested (if not more) in the Pitt job than the Penn State job he recently applied for.  Less baggage and less pressure at Pitt.  I think he would be a great fit, even though he does not have head coaching experience.

Tressel would be a great hire, however he really isnt available because if any team hires him the NCAA will have every eye on them and no school wants that
