Earlier on Friday the blog's Jerry Hinnen wrote about Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads being the top choice at Pitt to replace Todd Graham. Well, it's time for Pitt to turn to Plan B, because it doesn't look like Rhoads is going to be leaving Ames anytime soon.

The school announced on Friday that Rhoads had agreed to a ten-year contract.

"To say that I'm appreciative and humbled is a huge understatement," Rhoads said in a release. "So many people have contributed to what has been achieved in our program the first three years. I want to thank President Geoffroy and Jamie Pollard, who personally met with me to begin contract talks after the Kansas game in early November. The support of everyone in Cyclone Nation has been fantastic. It's great to be a Cyclone."

Full details of the new contract have not been released, but the school did announce that its total value is $20 million. Whatever the amount, it's pretty obvious at this point that when Rhoads said in the past he was happy at Iowa State and wanted to stay there, he meant it.

Rhoads came to Iowa State in 2009 after spending 8 seasons as defensive coordinator at Pitt and one season in the same position with Auburn. The Cyclones have gone 18-19 under Rhoads in his three seasons, and will be making their second bowl appearance against Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Vii_Fe, don't ever get concerned about wcuhns. He trolls about every article written about Iowa State and isnt worth your time. He seems to think calling them the snowcones is funny, too. He uses that witty remark all the time.

I agree about your assessment of Coach Mac.  He did a lot of good for the program, but he had a really rough ending to his tenure. It's easy to overlook the direction the program was going when they cut ties with McCarney.  Chizik....meh.  That was a sexy hire at the time, but a disaster in the end.  Good riddance to him.

Rhoads getting locked up with a contract is huge for this program. I realize these contracts are not really worth much when all is said and done, but it's nice to see Pollard making a committment to him and vice versa.  That can only help with the recruiting.

Rhoads passion has already transformed the attitude of both players and fans.  Watching them play this year against arguably THE toughest schedule in the country, they played like they thought they could win no matter who the opponent was.  The exciting thing is this is a young team and Rhoads is recruiting players that share his passion. The future is very bright.  It was great to see the administration step up and lock him in before someone else could lure him away as happened in the past with Johnny Majors and Earle Bruce.

Huh?  Not sure that is the way it went down.

I guess you people down in Ar-Kansas really know your Cyclone history.  Most Clone fans loved McCarney, he did pump life into a program that was dead; however, most would agree it was time for a change.  He is the winningest coach in Iowa State History with 56 victories...  He is also has the most losses of any Coach with 87.  In his final season the Cyclones lost to Iowa and then their first seven (7) Conference games before sending Mac out victorious over Mizzou.

Then Cyclone fans got to watch Gene Chizik get on the job training winning 5 of 24 games, before bolting and getting to win a National Championship at Auburn (with an illegal player, but you SEC people know all about that).

Now we have Coach Rhoads and I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone uphappy with our program.  I don't see a dismal season under Rhoads.  McCarney's 2002 team COLLAPSED from 6-1 and #9 in the Nation to finish 7-7 and follow it up with 2-10.  Rhoads teams have competed at a much more consistent level.  A 'dismal' season under Rhoads will be 4-5 wins minimum.  I see he consistently at 6-7 or 8 wins a season, and hopefully sneak in the occasional 9 or 10 win season every 5 to 6 years.

Who cares about the snowcones. They said the same thing, pretty much, on air a few years ago after Dan McCarney had finished a game, and the on field interviewer asked about coach McCarney's position being in jeopardy, and the Athletic Director said "No, coach McCarney's job is not in jeopardy". Two weeks later, give or take, he is gone. A couple of dismal seasons and they will can Rhoads, or keep it under the table (The situation), and he will be gone. I don't take these Iowans words, nor do I care. I love to hate them. Go Rutgers!!!

i think it was a good idea for the school. the several games that i watched this year, looked like theymhad several good qb's. su surprised several of the top programs. the school made a commitment to him. i hope thar h honors that commitmeny. When a coach gets to be a bid 12 coach, he has reached the pinnacle of his profession. Usually several million dollars. He hires sometiomes his family and his friends. Sp he works with peope he likes. He gave his word and if some other scholl pursues him. he can say, I already have a good job

Paul Rhoads signs 10-year deal with Iowa State

Paul Rhoads is a different than a lot of coaches in that he is a man of intergrity.  He is back in his home state, he truely loves Iowa State and understands the time and effort it takes to build a solid program.  As someone who has seen first hand the change in attitude in the program and fan base this is a great investment in the future.  It will pay dividends for years to come.  My hope is that with continued success Paul and his staff will continue to be paid above the market rate so the momentum continues.
